MADISON, S.D. – Valley City State (N.D.) kept the Dacotah Bank/North Star Athletic Association football regular-season title chase alive Saturday afternoon, holding off Dakota State (S.D.) by the score of 30-18 at Trojan Field. It was the home regular-season finale for eleven DSU seniors—Casey Bourque, Jared Chavez, Justin Folkers, Brodie Frederiksen, Justin Holmes, John Kauwenaole, Karson Lindblad, Darby Neal, Xavier Perez, Brandon Schmit and John Trout.
Dakota State fell to 4-5 overall record and 2-4 NSAA conference record. The Trojans finished the home schedule with a winning record (3-2).
Valley City State, receiving votes in the latest NAIA Football Coaches' Top 25 national poll, won their fourth straight game to raise their overall record to 7-2. VCSU is tied for first in the conference standings with a 5-1 record with No. 21 Dickinson State (N.D.), who rallied back to beat No. 25 Waldorf (Iowa) 30-28 in final seconds of the game. The Vikings host Waldorf in the final regular-season game next Saturday.
FIRST QUARTER
- Dakota State committed a fumble on the opening kick-off, recovered by VCSU's Dustin Kasowski on DSU's 5-yard line. The Vikings quickly scored with a 2-yard touchdown run by Louis Quinones with 14 minutes, 5 seconds on the clock. Landon Arredondo followed up with the PAT extra-point kick to put VCSU up 7-0.
The Trojans were forced to punt on the ensuing possession. The Vikings then used nine plays for 37 yards to DSU's 25-yard line. The Trojans' defense halted VCSU's drive on fourth-and-one situation as Marcus Vanden Bosch broke Viking Jalen Pfeifer's pass, turning the ball on downs with 7:47 left in the first quarter.- Dakota State recorded 17 plays for 75 yards in 7:19 on the next drive, scoring a touchdown. The Trojans converted 4-of-4 third-down play, including a 13-yard touchdown pass from Torren Devericks to Cooper McDermott with 28 seconds left in the first. Joshua Snook added the PAT extra-point kick to tie the game at 7-7.
SECOND QUARTER
- A total of three turnovers were committed in a span of 55 seconds in the early second quarter. VCSU's Alex Sell fumbled the ball after a completed catch and was recovered by Jordan Thomas from DSU's 48-yard line to VCSU's 28-yard line with 14:25 on the clock.
Two plays later, Brenner Furlong rushed for seven yards and lost the ball, recovered by Joshua McKnight on VCSU's 16-yard line with 13:44 left in the second quarter. On the next play, DSU's Noah Guse intercepted Pfeifer's pass on VCSU's 26-yard line with 13:35 to go.- The Trojans had to settled for a 30-yard field goal by Snook with 10:51 left in the second quarter, earning a 10-7 lead over the Vikings. DSU used six plays for 13 yards in 2:44 in the scoring drive.
- Valley City State answered back with 7 plays for 63 yards in 4:29 on the ensuing possession. Pfeifer threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Jake Peterson, followed by Arredondo's PAT extra-point kick as the Vikings regained their lead to 14-10 with 6:22 left before halftime.
- The Vikings outgained the Trojans 143-136 in total offensive yards in the first thirty minutes of the game, holding on to a 14-10 halftime edge.
THIRD QUARTER
Valley City State kicked off the third quarter with eight plays in 66 yards in 4:31 for another touchdown. Quinones produced two first-downs on rushing plays, moving the ball into the DSU's territory. He rushed for a four-yard touchdown to widen their lead with 10:29 on the clock. Arredondo added the PAT extra-point kick to give Vikings a 21-10 lead.- With DSU's ball starting their drive on own 29-yard line with 5:40 left, Furlong opened with a 25-yard rush to VCSU's 46-yard line. The Trojans added another two first-downs, helped with the Vikings' 15-yard personal foul face mask to move the ball to VCSU's 21-yard line. The Trojans continued moving the ball the end zone, facing a fourth-and-goal situation on the 1-yard line. Devericks rushed for a 1-yard touchdown run as the Trojans cut VCSU's lead to 20-16 with 33 seconds left in the third.
- DSU's PAT 2-point attempt failed as the Viking Doniaj Smelker returned an interception for a 2-point touchdown. VCSU's lead grew to 23-16.
FOURTH QUARTER
Valley City State extended their lead to 30-16 in the early fourth quarter. The Vikings used 12 plays for 66 yards as Quinones rushed for a 2-yard touchdown followed by Arredondo's PAT extra-point kick with 8:19 remaining.- Dakota State used 16 plays for 70 yards in 6:09 on the next possession but could not convert their scoring opportunity. The Trojans' drive was halted on the fourth-and-goal on VCSU's 2-yard line as McDermott's pass to Jacob Hirsch was broken up by Arron Martin in the end zone with 2:10 left in the game.
- The Trojans added a safety to cut VCSU's lead to 30-18 with 1:05 remaining
- Valley City State secured the game as Brandon Elton intercepted Devericks' pass on VCSU's 25-yard line with five seconds left.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Furlong ran a career-high 119 yards in 17 rushes for the Trojans. He finished the game with 126 all-purpose yards. Devericks added 13 rushes for 55 yards and a touchdown. He finished the game by going 11-of-26 for 78 yards and a touchdown.
- Keel caught three passes for 16 yards for Dakota State. Hirsch added three receptions for 14 yards. Roger Moore had a 22-yard reception. McDermott had a 13-yard touchdown catch.
- Caleb Nielsen recorded three punts for a total of 103 yards (34.3 yards per punt). Bourque registered four kick-offs for 148 yards.
- Cole McCarty led the Trojans' defense with 15 tackles (5 solo, 10 assist). Riley Janke added 11 tackles (4 solo, 7 assist). Conner Tordsen had 1.5 quarterback sack for 14.5 yards loss. Vanden Bosch and Trout each had eight tackles. Jason Sakamoto-Ryan also had 0.5 sack for 5.5 yards loss. Guse had an interception. Thomas had a fumble recovery and returned it for 24 yards.
Quinones rushed 35 times for 148 yards with three touchdowns for the Vikings. Pfeifer was 11-of-14 for 123 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Kellen Kessler had three receptions for 27 yards. Caid Combs added two catches for 20 yards. Peterson had a 30-yard touchdown reception.- Martin led VCSU's defensive unit with 15 tackles (2 solo, 13 assist). Marshaun Jones, Smelker and Hunter Olson each tallied eight tackles. Elton had an interception.
TEAM COMPAISONS
- Dakota State outgained Valley City State 282-249 in total offensive yards. The Trojans had 204 rushing yards compared to the Vikings 126 rushing yards. VCSU had 123 passing yards, while DSU had 78 passing yards.
- The Trojans produced 19 first-downs compared to the Vikings 15 first-downs. DSU was 8-of-15 on third-downs, while VCSU was 5-of-11 first-downs.
- The Vikings had the ball for 30 minute, 9 seconds. The Trojans maintain possession for 29 minutes, 51 seconds.
