MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) held the lead for nearly 12 minutes Saturday evening on the second day of the home tournament at DSU Fieldhouse versus Doane (Neb.). The Tigers outscored the Trojans 21-6 in the final 7:06 of the first-half and never looked back for an 82-57 victory.
Dakota State fell to 3-8 overall record. Doane, under the guidance of former DSU men's basketball athlete and assistant coach, improved to 4-8 overall record. The Tigers finished the tournament with a 2-0 record.
Presentation (S.D.) defeated Oak Hills (Minn.) 116-49 in the earlier game Saturday.
Dakota State will be off next week and won't return to action until Monday, Dec. 2. The Trojans play an exhibition game at NCAA Division II and former conference foe Black Hills State (S.D.). Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. (Central Time)/6 p.m. (Mountain Time) at Young Gymnasium in Spearfish, S.D.
Doane (Neb.) 82, Dakota State (S.D.) 57 – FINAL
- Dakota State opened the game with an 8-2 lead with 16 minutes and 33 seconds on the clock, capped by back-to-back 3-pointer by Josh McGreal and Brady Elder.
- After a 3-pointer by Gare Ewefada for 21-18 DSU lead, the Tigers went on a 9-0 scoring run to grab a 27-21 lead with 5:37 left in the first-half. Cole Bruhn answered with a basket on the following possession as DSU trailed 27-23 with 5:24 remaining in the first.
- The Tigers closed the first-half with a 14-4 outburst to grab a 41-27 halftime lead. Doane was 51.7 percent from the field, converting 16 baskets in 31 attempts. Dakota State was held to 37 percent shooting from the field (10-of-27).
- Dakota State could get no closer than 15 points after opening the second-half with a 4-0 run (McGreal and Ewefada each with a basket).
- Doane maintained control for rest of the game, outscoring Dakota State 41-30 in the second-half.
- McGreal was 10-of-18 from the field, pouring in 23 points for the Trojans. He grabbed six rebounds. Ewefada and Bruhn each added nine points. Bruhn dished out three assists.
Anthony Laravie led the Tigers with 27 points. He was 9-of-17 from the field, including 7-of-13 from the 3-point line. Joe Burt added 14 points. Isiah Sykes tallied 10 points and stole the ball three times.- Miguel Lopez scored nine points and grabbed eight rebounds for DU. He also had four assists.
- Doane shot 52.5 percent overall from the field (32-of-61) compared to Dakota State 35.6 percent (21-of-59). The Tigers were 13-of-31 from the 3-point arc, while the Trojans made eight 3-pointers in 31 tries.
- DU outrebounded DSU 42-28. The Tigers outscored the Trojans 18-3 in points off turnovers and 38-16 inside the paint.
