MBK: DSU struggles in 65-51 defeat to MMC at Sanford Pentagon

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) struggled from the field, shooting 33.9 percent after dropping a 65-51 non-conference contest versus Mount Marty (S.D.) on the second day of the NAIA South Dakota men's basketball classic at the Sanford Pentagon.  The Lancers drained 12 3-pointers in the game.

Dakota State remained winless in six games this season (0-6 overall record).  Mount Marty improved to 4-1 overall record.

The Trojans look for their first win of the season as they continue their action in the preseason tournament.  DSU heads to Strode Center in Aberdeen, S.D. to play in the two-day Isreal-Strong Memorial tournament.  Dakota State takes on Briar Cliff (Iowa) on Friday evening at 5:30 p.m. and Oak Hills (Minn.) on Saturday at 5 p.m.

Mount Marty (S.D.) 65, Dakota State (S.D.) 51 – FINAL

  • The game's first ten minutes featured three ties and six lead changes between the Trojans and the Lancers.  DSU led as many as four points during the first ten minutes span (Anthony Costello hit a basket with 17:11 on the clock to give DSU a 6-2 lead).
  • Trailing 12-9, Mount Marty held Dakota State scoreless for five-plus minutes and sparked a 13-0 outburst for the first double-digit lead of the game at 22-12 after a 3-pointer by Chris King with 6:46 remaining in the first-half.
  • Dakota State answered back with a 12-3 scoring tear, capped by Josh McGreal's field goal with 2:11 to go in the first-half (DSU trailed 25-24).
  • MMC closed the first-half with an 8-2 run to widen their lead to 33-26.
  • Mount Marty was 12-of-32 field goals in the first-half (37.5 percent), including 7-of-21 from the 3-point line (33.3 percent).  Dakota State was 11-of-31 field goals (35.5 percent) and 2-of-13 3-pointers.
  • Dakota State pulled within one point after McGreal completed a 3-point play, cutting Mount Marty's lead to 39-38 with 15:57 remaining.
  • The Lancers held the Trojans to 11 points in the final 11:37 of the game.  MMC scored 22 points during that stretch to secure the victory.
  • Mount Marty outscored Dakota State 32-25 in the second-half.  MMC shot 44.8 percent from the field (13-of-29) in the final twenty minutes of the game, while DSU was 9-of-28 from the field (32.1 percent).
  • Costello posted a double-double of 14 points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds for DSU.  He was 7-of-17 from the field and registered three blocks.  Gare Ewefada added 14 points.  McGreal scored 13 points and collected seven rebounds.
  • Brady Elder earned seven rebounds and dished out four assists for Dakota State.  Brady Van Holland scored eight points off the bench. 
  • King poured in a game-high 24 points for the Lancers.  He was 8-of-16 from the field and 5-of-11 from the 3-point line.  Sab Gvedashvili added 17 points (7-of-11 field goals and 3-of-6 3-pointers) and seven rebounds.  Colby Johnson had eight points.  Elijah Pappas stole the ball seven times and grabbed seven rebounds.
  • Jordan Johnson had five assists for MMC.  Colby Johnson added four assists.
  • Mount Marty shot 41 percent overall from the field (25-of-61 field goals) and 12-of-39 3-pointers (30.8 percent).  Dakota State converted 20-of-59 field goals and 6-of-25 3-pointers (24 percent).
  • DSU made all five free-throw attempts in the game.  MMC was 3-of-8 free-throws (37.5 percent).
  • The Trojans outrebounded the Lancers 43-35.  Mount Marty outscored Dakota State 11-3 in points off turnovers.
