SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Dakota State's (S.D.) missed an opportunity to knock down a potential game-tying 3-point field goal in the final seconds, falling short to in-state rival Mount Marty (S.D.) on the second day of the NAIA South Dakota Basketball Classic at Sanford Pentagon. The Lancers held on to defeat the Trojans by the score of 81-77.
DSU fell to 0-4 overall record on the season. Mount Marty remained undefeated in four games this season (4-0 overall record). Both teams will be meeting for the second meeting of the season on Jan. 22, 2020 at DSU Fieldhouse.
Dakota State returns home for another two-game home stand. The Trojans host McPherson (Kan.) on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse.
Mount Marty (S.D.) 81, Dakota State (S.D. 77 – FINAL
- Mount Marty started the game with a 12-4 lead with six minutes, eleven seconds on the clock in the first period. Trailing 15-8, the Trojans stormed back with a 10-1 scoring surge to overtake the lead by the end of the quarter. Olivia Breske completed a 3-point play to give DSU an 18-16 lead.
- The Trojans were 8-of-15 from the field (53.3 percent) in the first quarter compared to the Lancers 31.6 field goal percentage (6-of-19).
- DSU and MMC battled back-and-forth in the second quarter, recording two ties and five lead changes. The Lancers led 40-36 by halftime. Mount Marty outscored Dakota State 24-18 in the second period.
- The Trojans were 15-of-31 field goals in the first-half, while the Lancers were 14-of-29 field goals.
After falling behind 45-38 in the third quarter, DSU went on a 7-0 run sparked by back-to-back baskets by Savannah Walsdorf and a 3-pointer by Lindsey Vogl (assisted by Shaylee DeBeer) to knot the game at 45-45 with 6:01 on the clock.- Jamie Tebben made a field goal with few seconds left before the end of the third quarter, giving MMC a slim 57-56 lead over DSU. The Trojans outscored the Lancers 20-17 in the first ten minutes of the second-half.
- With the sixth tie registered at 62-62 with 7:33 remaining, Mount Marty went on a 7-0 run to earn a 69-62 lead after a free-throw by Lexi Hochstein with 6:23 left.
- Trailing 80-75, Courtney Menning hit a lay-up as the Trojans cut their deficit to 80-77 with less than ten seconds remaining. The Lancers quickly committed a turnover, giving the possession to the Trojans.
- DSU's Jessi Giles' 3-point field goal attempt fell short for a potential game-tying as MMC's Peyton Stolee rebounded. Molly Koisti was fouled with less than two seconds remaining in the game. She missed the first free-throw attempt but made the second free-throw attempt to secure the victory for the Lancers.
- MMC outscored DSU 24-21 in the game's final ten minutes of the game. There were a total of 10 lead changes and six ties in the game.
Four Trojans players scored in double-digit, paced by Vogl with 18 points. She was 7-of-10 from the field and 4-of-5 from the 3-point arc. Giles added 16 points. Lexi Robson scored 12 points off the bench. Walsdorf tallied 11 points (5-of-7 field goals).- Morgan Koepsell pulled down seven rebounds for Dakota State. Giles had six rebounds. Walsdorf registered five rebounds. Ashlyn Macdonald dished out a game-high four assists. Menning and Walsdorf each stole the ball twice.
- Karlee McKinney scored 19 points for the Lancers (7-of-12 field goals and 5-of-6 free-throws). Tebben and Koisti each added 15 points. Koisti had four steals and three assists. Stolle collected eight rebounds.
- Mount Marty shot 46.7 percent overall from the field (28-of-60) compared to Dakota State 44.3 percent (27-of-61). The Trojans drained 10 3-pointers in 20 attempts (50 percent), while the Lancers were held to 3-of-19 3-pointers.
- MMC went to the free-throw line 31 times, making 22 free-throws (71 percent). DSU was 13-of-15 free-throws (86.7 percent), with 12-of-14 free-throws coming from the second-half.
- DSU outrebounded MMC 40-32 in the game. The Lancers outscored the Trojans 22-12 in points off turnovers and 46-30 inside the paint. Dakota State outscored Mount Marty 32-23 in bench points.
