Chargers' hot start doom Trojans in women's basketball

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Briar Cliff (Iowa) raced to an 11-1 lead over Dakota State (S.D.) in the non-conference women's basketball action at Newman Flanagan Center.  The Chargers, who hit 10-of-20 3-pointers in the game, never trailed in the game and rolled to a 74-59 victory over the Trojans.

DSU lost their fourth straight game, falling to 2-8 overall record.  Briar Cliff improved to 3-9 overall record and earned its season series sweep over the Trojans (won the first meeting 85-73 at DSU Fieldhouse on Oct. 28).

Dakota State returns to Sioux City on Wednesday evening, visiting No. 7-ranked Morningside (Iowa).  Tip-off from the RVSC-Allee Gym is set for 6 p.m.

Briar Cliff (Iowa) 74, Dakota State (S.D.) 59 – FINAL

  • The Chargers opened the game by going 4-of-6 from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers to fuel an 11-1 lead with six minutes and thirty-three seconds on the clock.
  • DSU was held to no field goals until the 6:14 mark of the first period after a 3-pointer by Lindsey Vogl, assisted by Savannah Walsdorf (Trojans trailed 11-4).
  • Briar Cliff shot 60 percent in the first quarter (9-of-15 field goals) and hit five three-pointers, grabbing a 29-12 lead over Dakota State.  The Trojans were held to 41.7 percent shooting from the field (5-of-12 field goals).
  • The Trojans used a 14-4 run in the first four-and-half-plus minutes of the second quarter, trimming the Chargers' lead down to single digit.  Riley Peters hit a 3-pointer (assisted by Ashlyn Macdonald) as DSU cut BCU's lead to 33-26 with 5:14 left in the second.
  • Trailing 42-30, Vogl drained a 3-pointer as the Trojans trailed 42-33 with less than 20 seconds to go before halftime.  On the next possession, Courtney Menning stole the ball and answered with a basket with few seconds before the halftime buzzer as the Chargers led 42-35.
  • Dakota State outscored Briar Cliff 23-13 in the second quarter.
  • The Trojans shot a blazing 57.1 percent from the field (12-of-21 field goals) and 3-of-6 3-pointers.  The Chargers were 51.9 percent from the field (14-of-27 field goals) and 8-of-14 from the 3-point arc.
  • Briar Cliff maintained control for their rest of the game, holding their double-digit lead.  The Trojans could get no closer than nine points after a free-throw by Jessi Giles with 3:33 left in the third (DSU trailed 49-40).
  • The Chargers outscored the Trojans 13-7 in the third period and 19-17 in the fourth quarter.  Both teams struggled from the field in the second-half, with the Chargers shooting 37.5 percent (9-of-24 field goals) and 2-of-6 3-pointer.  The Trojans were 37 percent from the field (10-of-27 field goals) and 3-of-13 from the 3-point line.
  • BCU converted 12-of-14 free-throws (85.7 percent) compared to DSU 1-of-2 free-throws in the final twenty minutes of the game.
  • Giles and Morgan Koepsell each tallied 13 points for the Trojans.  Sidney Fick, Vogl, and Peters each added eight points. 
  • Walsdorf pulled down five rebounds and stole the ball three times for DSU.  Fick, Giles, Macdonald, Shaylee DeBeer and Koepsell each added three rebounds.  Macdonald dished out three assists.
  • Four BCU starters hit double-digit in scoring, paced by Konnor Sudmann with 27 points.  She was 8-of-15 from the field, 5-of-7 from the 3-point line and made all six free-throw attempts.  She also had six rebounds.
  • Payton Slaughter added 18 points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists for the Chargers.  Madelyn Deitchler had 15 points and five rebounds.  Breanna Allen scored 11 points and dished out three assists.  Jadyn Bussinger recorded a game-high four assists. 
  • Dakota State shot 45.8 percent overall from the field (22-of-48 field goals) compared to Briar Cliff 45.1 percent (23-of-51).  The Trojans were 6-of-19 from the 3-point line (31.6 percent).
  • BCU made 18-of-21 from the free-throw line (85.7 percent).  DSU was 9-of-13 free-throws (69.2 percent).
  • The Chargers outrebounded the Trojans 30-25 in the game.  Briar Cliff outscored Dakota State 26-23 in points off turnovers and 15-6 in second-chance points.
  • DSU outscored BCU 26-3 in bench points and 22-20 inside the paint.
