JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Jamestown (N.D.) shot 58.7 percent from the field Saturday evening, rolling past short-handed Dakota State (S.D.) by the score of 93-66 in a non-conference men's basketball conference action at Newman Center. The Trojans were held to 36.5 percent field goal shooting in the game.
Dakota State fell to 3-11 overall record. Jamestown improved to 10-5 overall record. Both teams were former members of the Dakota Athletic Conference and the North Star Athletic Association.
The Trojans look to halt their losing skid as they ring in the New Year on Wednesday, hosting long-time rival No. 7-ranked Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.). Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse.
Jamestown (N.D.) 93, Dakota State (S.D.) 66 – FINAL
- Anthony Costello hit a basket (assisted by Gavin Schipper) to give Trojans its first lead of the game at 2-0 with nineteen minutes and twenty-nine seconds on the clock.
- DSU and UJ went through two ties and one lead change in the first two minutes of the game. Leading 9-8, Jamestown went on a 12-2 scoring run to post its first double-digit lead of the game at 21-10 with 8:46 left in the first-half.
- Cole Bruhn drained a 3-pointer (assisted by Schipper) as Dakota State trimmed Jamestown's lead to 27-23 with 4:25 to go before intermission.
- Jack Frazier hit a basket to widen Jimmies' lead to 36-27 by halftime.
- UJ shot 14-of-29 from the field (48.3 percent) compared to DSU 11-of-29 field goals (37.9 percent) in the first twenty minutes of the game.
- Dakota State could get no closer than five points after a field goal by Bruhn with 17:35 remaining, trailing 39-35.
- The Jimmies quickly answered with a 7-0 scoring run for 46-34 lead. The Trojans then scored five straight points (basket by Bruhn and a 3-pointer by Carson Rentz assisted by Gare Ewefada) to cut UJ's lead to 46-39 with 15:51 left in the game.
- Jamestown maintained their double-digit lead for the rest of the game, securing the victory after outscoring Dakota State 57-39 in the final twenty minutes of the game.
- The Jimmies shot 23-of-34 from the field (67.6 percent) in the second-half and held the Trojans to 35.3 percent shooting from the field (12-of-34 field goals).
- Three DSU players scored in double digits, paced by Costello with 18 points. He was 7-of-14 from the field and pulled down nine rebounds, one rebound shy for posting a double-double. Ewefada added 14 points. Rentz tallied 13 points and recorded four rebounds. He also dished out two assists and stole the ball two times.
- Bruhn scored nine points, grabbed five rebounds and produced three assists for the Trojans. Mason Ritter added seven points off the bench. Schipper had five points and three assists.
- Brock Schrom poured in a game-high 27 points on his 12-of-16 field goals and 3-of-6 free-throws for Jamestown. He also had five rebounds and three blocked shots. Brady Birch and Frazier each added 11 points. Isaiah Dobson had 10 points.
- Frazier contributed a game-high eight assists for the Jimmies. Marc Kjos added six points and six assists. Birch collected seven rebounds. Devan Praska had nine points and six rebounds.
- Jamestown was 37-of-63 overall from the field compared to Dakota State 23-of-63 field goals. Both teams made eight 3-pointers in the game. DSU hit 12-of-14 free-throws (85.7 percent), while UJ struggled from the free-throw line by making 11-of-18 free-throws (61.1 percent).
- The Jimmies outrebounded the Trojans 44-31. DSU outscored UJ 11-3 in points off turnovers.
- Jamestown outscored Dakota State 56-24 inside the paint.
