MBK: Bellevue (Neb.) holds off Dakota State (S.D.) 67-63 in NSAA season opener

MADISON, S.D. – It was the tale of two halves in the North Star Athletic Association men's basketball conference opener Saturday evening at DSU Fieldhouse.  Bellevue (Neb.) shot 60.9 percent from the field in the first-half for a 13-point halftime lead and held off Dakota State's (S.D.) second-half red-hot shooting for a 67-63 victory.

Dakota State (S.D.) dropped their overall record to 3-9 and 0-1 NSAA conference record.  Bellevue raised their overall record to 7-5 and 1-0 NSAA record.  The full sate of North Star conference action will not resume until next month.

DSU is off until Dec. 18 as they visit No. 2-ranked Morningside (Iowa) in a non-conference action.  Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. at RVSC-Allee Gym in Sioux City, Iowa.  Bellevue is off until Dec. 16-17 as they compete in the two-day Puerto Rico Clasico in San Juan, P.R.

Bellevue (Neb.) 67, Dakota State (S.D.) 63 – FINAL

  • Anthony Costello kicked off the game with back-to-back baskets to give Dakota State a 4-0 lead with nineteen minutes and sixteen seconds on the clock.
  • Trailing 6-2, the Bruins used four different scorers (Isaiah Bates, Niamey Harris, Lewis Hayes and Connor Dukes) to spark a 10-0 run for a 12-6 lead with 14:48 left.
  • The Trojans answered back with a 5-0 run after a 3-pointer by Brady Elder and a basket by Gare Ewefada, trimming BU's lead to 12-11 with 13:16 on the clock in the first-half.
  • The Bruins used another 10-0 outburst to grab the first double digit lead of the game, capped by Jemeil King's basket with 8:32 left for 22-11 lead.
  • Jaron Dickson hit a basket (assisted by King) before the first-half's buzzer, ballooning Bellevue's lead to 34-21 at halftime.
  • BU missed just nine shots in the first-half, converting 14-of-23 field goals (60.9 percent).  DSU was held to 33.3 percent from the field (33.3 percent) in the first ten minutes of the game. 
  • Trailing 39-29 with 16:48 left, the Trojans held the Bruins to just two field goals and four points for more than eight minutes.  Dakota State cut Bellevue's lead to 43-42 with 11:12 remaining in the game after a field goal by Gare Ewefada.
  • At 47-45, Bellevue used a 9-2 run to expand their lead to 56-47 with 4:03 left.
  • Brady Van Holland drained a 3-pointer as the Trojans trailed by just one point at 62-61 with less than 20 seconds left.
  • Dickinson hit 1-of-2 free-throw to give BU a 63-61 lead, but the Trojans committed a turnover on the next possession.  King added a pair of free-throws to extend Bellevue's lead to 65-61 with less than 15 seconds to go.
  • Ewefada made a lay-up as the Trojans trimmed Bruins' lead to 65-63 with 7.2 seconds left.  Dukes was fouled and converted both free-throws to secure the victory for BU.
  • Dakota State outscored Bellevue 42-33 in the second-half, thanks to their blazing 70 percent shooting from the field (14-of-20).  Bellevue was held to 38.5 field goal shooting (10-of-26).
  • Josh McGreal and Ewefada each scored 14 points for DSU.  Van Holland scored 11 points off the bench.  Brady Elder had eight points and dished out a game-high five assists.  Costello had six points.  Gavin Schipper tallied five points.
  • Van Holland grabbed six rebounds for the Trojans.  Elder added five rebounds and stole the ball twice. 
  • Hayes and Dukes each led the Bruins with 15 points.  Haris added 11 points.  King had 10 points.
  • Hayes registered a game-high eight rebounds for Bellevue.  Dickson had seven points and six rebounds off the bench.  Jaylen Wiltz recorded two steals.
  • Both Bellevue and Dakota State each made 24 field goals and four 3-point field goals.  The difference came down to the free-throw line, where the Bruins made four more free-throws than the Trojans (15-11).
  • BU was 49 percent overall from the field (24-of-49 field goals) compared to DSU 48 percent (24-of-50 field goals).  The Bruins were 4-of-14 from the 3-point arc, while the Trojans were 4-of-11 3-pointers.
  • Bellevue made 15-of-19 free-throws (78.9 percent), while Dakota State was 11-of-20 free-throws (55 percent).
  • BU outrebounded DSU 34-25.  The Bruins outscored the Trojans 17-14 in points off turnovers and 36-30 inside the paint.
  • Dakota State's bench outscored Bellevue's bench 19-13.
  • Both teams will meet for the second North Star conference meeting on their regular-season finale on Feb. 21, 2020 in Bellevue, Neb.
