SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Briar Cliff held on to a slim 3-1 lead after six innings Wednesday afternoon in a mid-week non-conference baseball action with Dakota State (S.D.) at Bishop Mueller Field. The Chargers pulled away after adding a total of five runs in the seventh and eighth innings to earn an 8-1 victory over the Trojans.
Dakota State fell to 3-13 overall record. Briar Cliff lifted their overall record to 16-11.
The Chargers took the first lead of the game in the bottom first inning. With bases loaded and one out situation, Harrison Jestel recorded an RBI hit-by-pitch to earn a 1-0 lead in favor of BCU. Trevor Adler followed up with an RBI single to extend Briar Cliff's lead to 2-0.
DSU was unable to convert the scoring chances in the top second frame, despite leaving bases loaded.
Briar Cliff scored a run in the bottom fourth to expand their lead to 3-0, thanks to a lead-off double by Darnell Prince. Michael Anthony produced an RBI ground out to score Prince to make it three-run lead for the Chargers.
Jerrett Plunkett blasted a lead-off home run in the top fifth inning, ending DSU's scoring drought and trailed 3-1. It was his second home run this season for the Trojans.
Briar Cliff plated four runs in the bottom seventh to widen their lead to 7-1. Sawyer Olson and Jestel hit back to back singles with one out. Prince reached on base by a walk with two outs, setting up a bases loaded situation for BCU.
Pinch hitter Tyler Hill hit a 2-RBI single to score Olson and Jestel to make it 5-1 BCU. Anthony followed up with a 2-RBI double to score Prince and Hill for gain a six-run lead by the end of the seventh inning.
Trevor Adler recorded an RBI single in the bottom eighth to balloon their lead to 8-1.
Plunkett went 2-of-5 at the plate with a home run, single and collected an RBI for Dakota State. Adrian Butrimas added a double and single. Marcos Alvarez registered two singles. Chris Burke extended his hitting streak to nine games after recording a single. Ryan Jackovich had two walks. Noah Hammond added a walk.
Adler led the Chargers with two singles and two RBIs. Hill added a single and drove in two runs. Anthony had a double and three RBIs. Jestel registered a single, RBI and recorded two walks. Nick Robinson had two walks and swiped two bases.
Both teams recorded eight hits in the game. The Chargers left 12 runners on base compared to the Trojans 11 runners left on base.
Trey Randel (L, 1-2) recorded the loss on the pitching mound for DSU. He worked for 4 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on three hits. Sage Hudson and Ryan Peterson each pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief.
Jake Hubbard (W, 1-0) earned the victory for BCU. He tossed five innings and yielded the Trojans to one run on six hits. Zayne Mowen and Austin Carter combined for four scoreless innings in relief.
Dakota State stays on the road this weekend as they resume to North Star conference action. The Trojans visit Waldorf (Iowa) in a four-game series, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. The four-game series will be held at Forest City High School baseball field in Forest City, Iowa.
