No. 24 Jimmies win battle of pitcher's duel with Trojans in softball

March 6, 2019

TUCSON, Ariz. – Dakota State (S.D.) and No. 24-ranked Jamestown (N.D.) met for the second time within a month Wednesday afternoon in the Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational Games.  The Jimmies led 5-0 after five innings and held off the Trojans by the score of 5-2 to complete the season series sweep (UJ defeated DSU in Presentation, S.D. Dome last February).

Dakota State fell to 1-5 overall record on the season.  Jamestown, a former member of the North Star Athletic Association conference, lifted their overall record to 13-6.

UJ took the first lead of the game, despite getting a lead-off triple by Allie McCain.  She was tagged out after Mariah Martinez's fielder choice.  Morgan Geiszler drilled an RBI double to score Martinez for a 1-0 Jimmies lead in the first frame.

Jamestown extended their lead to 4-0, highlighted by McCain's 2-RBI single in the top fourth inning.

Katie Reisdorfer hit an RBI single to extend Jimmies' lead to 5-0 in the top fifth.

Dakota State ended their scoring drought with a run scored in the bottom half of the sixth inning.  Peyton Brokiewicz led off with a single.  Nicole Stewart blasted an RBI double to score Brokiewicz as DSU trailed 5-1.  The Trojans were unable to score more run in the bottom sixth after leaving two runners on base.

Tatum Ronke blasted a solo home run with one out in the bottom seventh as the Trojans cut the Jimmies' lead to 5-2.  It was her third home run of the season, and her 15th career home run at Dakota State (tied for third all-time home run with Brokiewicz).

Brokiewicz hit a triple with two outs in the bottom seventh, but DSU was unable to convert their scoring chances.

Brokiewicz led the Trojans by going 3-of-4 at the plate with a triple, two singles and a run scored.  Stewart added a double and an RBI.  Xitlali Lopez and Quinn Motichka each had two hits.  Ronke had a home run and registered an RBI.

McCain finished the game with 3-of-4 at the plate (triple, two singles) and drove in two runs for the Jimmies.  Reisdorfer added two singles and an RBI.  Geiszler had a double and an RBI.

DSU outhit UJ 9-8 in the game.  Both teams left six runners on base.

Lopez (L, 1-2) took the loss after tossing a complete game for the Trojans.  She allowed five runs (one unearned) on eight hits.

Kat Miska (W, 5-2) earned a complete game victory for the Jimmies.  She gave up two runs on nine hits.  She struck out 12 Trojans' batters.

Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column Wednesday evening.  The Trojans face another foe from the Great Plains Athletic Conference, Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.).  First pitch is set for 7 p.m. at Lincoln Park.
