PC takes another twin-bill from DSU in NSAA baseball action

RALSTON, Neb. – Presentation (S.D.) earned another twin-bill North Star Athletic Association baseball conference action with Dakota State (S.D.) Monday at Orval Smith Field.  The Saints held on to earn 11-7 and 6-1 victories to complete the conference's four-game series sweep.

Dakota State fell to 3-27 overall record and 1-17 NSAA conference record.  Presentation improved to 18-15 overall record and 10-6 record in league play. 

Game 1 – Presentation (S.D.) 11, Dakota State (S.D.) 7 – FINAL

Presentation raced to a 10-1 lead after five innings before Dakota State rallied back with in three runs, but fell short in the first game of the doubleheader.

The Saints took the first lead of the game in the bottom third after plating two runs.  Angel Faras led off with a walk.  Jesse Spangler followed up with a single and advanced Faras to second base.  Zane Hunt hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Faras to third base and Spangler to second base.

PC took a 1-0 lead after Jace Wyatt's RBI sacrifice fly to score Faras (Spangler advanced to third base).  Kyle Angielski followed up with an RBI single to score Spangler to make it 2-0 in favor of Presentation.

The Trojans answered with a run scored in the top fourth.  Samuel Drummond led off with a walk.  Marcos Alvarez hit a single with two outs and advanced Drummond to third base.  A wild pitch committed by the Saints allowed Drummond to score for DSU's first run of the game (DSU trailed 2-1).

Presentation scored four runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning to widen their lead to 6-1.  With bases full, Hunt recorded an RBI walk, followed by Wyatt's RBI single and Johnny Radomskiy's 2-RBI single.

Spangler and Wyatt each hit a 2-run home run to balloon PC's lead to 10-1 after the fifth inning.

Dakota State exploded for five runs in the top seventh inning.  Alec Gannon reached on base by a fielder's choice, followed by Chris Burke's walk to advance Gannon to second base.  Keaton Hoeke hit a single to score Gannon as the Trojans cut PC's lead to 10-2 (Burke advanced to third base and Hoeke to second base caused by PC's error on the same play).

DSU reduced their deficit to 10-3 as Jerrett Plunkett hit an RBI single to score Burke (Hoeke advanced to third base).  Kyle Gosh followed up with an RBI single to score Hoeke as the Trojans cut PC's lead to 10-4.

Jalen Boyd reached safely on base caused by Saints' defensive miscue to set up a bases loaded situation for Dakota State in the top seventh.  The Trojans continued its scoring surge as Alvarez drilled a 2-RBI double to score Plunkett and Gosh, trailing 10-6.

Hoeke smashed a solo home run in the top eighth inning as Dakota State cut Presentation's lead down to 10-7.  It was his first home run of the season for DSU.

The Saints scored once in the bottom eighth to extend their lead to 11-7. 

DSU was unable to convert scoring chances in the final inning as they left one runner on base, securing the win for PC.

Hoeke finished the game by going 2-of-5 at the plate for Dakota State.  He had a home run, single, scored two runs and drove in a run.  Alvarez also went 2-of-5 at the plate with a double, single and collected two RBIs.  Gannon had two singles and a run scored.  Burke recorded a single and reached on base by a walk twice.  Drummond had two walks.  Gosh had a single and an RBI. 

Wyatt led the Saints with a home run, single and earned a game-high four RBIs.  Spangler added a home run, single and two RBIs.  Radomskiy registered a double, two singles and two RBIs.  Angielski had three hits and an RBI.

PC outhit DSU 12-9 in the game.  The Trojans left nine runners on base compared to the Saints eight runners left on base.

Burke (L, 0-5) recorded the loss on the pitching mound for Dakota State.  He allowed six runs on five hits and recorded four strikeouts.  Brett Sanchez worked for 1 1/3 innings in relief, giving up three runs on four hits and struck out three PC's batters.  Max Luesebrink also tossed 3 1/3 innings in relief and yielded the Saints to two runs on three hits.

Joey Wollman (W, 3-2) earned the victory for Presentation after working for 5 1/3 innings.  He allowed one run on four hits and struck out five Trojans batters.  Brendan Delgado pitched for one inning in relief, giving up five runs on four hits.  Chris Wulf tossed 1 1/3 innings while allowing one run on one h it.  Austin Crain worked in the scoreless ninth inning.

Game 2 – Presentation (S.D.) 6, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL

Dakota State earned the first lead of the game in the opening inning of the four-game series finale.  Presentation rallied back by using a pair of two innings offensive explosion and defeated the Trojans to complete the sweep.

Boyd hit a single with one out.  Drummond followed up with a single with two outs and advanced Boyd to second base.  Alvarez produced an RBI single to score Boyd for DSU's 1-0 lead.

The Saints scored twice caused by DSU's defensive error in the bottom fourth inning to overtake a 2-1 lead.

Presentation plated four more runs in the bottom fifth frame.  Hunt reached on base by a walk.  Wyatt followed up with an RBI double to score Hunt to extend their lead to 3-1.

PC widen their lead to 4-1 after Anthony Guzman hit an RBI single to score Wyatt in the bottom fifth.  Radomskiy hit a double to advance pinch runner CJ Canfield to third base.  A wild pitch by the Trojans allowed Canfield to score to make it 5-1.  The Saints ballooned their lead to 6-1 after a defensive miscue by DSU, scoring Radomskiy.

Dakota State left one runner on base when the game ended.

Alvarez led the Trojans by going 2-of-3 at the plate with two singles and an RBI.  Burke, Boyd, Plunkett and Drummond each added a single.  Christian Sanchez and Gannon each recorded a walk.

Spangler and Wyatt each had a double and single for the Saints.  Radomskiy added a double.  Wyatt and Guzman each had an RBI. 

Both teams registered six hits in the game.  The Trojans left eight runners on base, while the Saints left six runners on base.

Trey Randel (L, 1-6) tabbed the defeat, despite working 4 1/3 innings on the pitching mound for DSU.  He gave up six runs (three unearned runs) on five hits.  He struck out five PC's batters.  Boyd pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings, limiting the Saints to one hit.

BJ Wyche (W, 4-2) recorded the victory for Presentation.  He worked for 4 1/3 innings and allowed one run on six hits.  Dryden Kaczmar tossed 2 2/3 shutout innings in relief.  Wyche and Kaczmar each recorded five strikeouts. 

Up Next

Dakota State is scheduled to head to Sioux City, Iowa for a non-conference doubleheader at Morningside (Iowa).  The first game of the doubleheader is set for 2:30 p.m. at Lewis and Clark Park.
