SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Morningside (Iowa) raced to a 10-0 lead after two innings in both games Tuesday at Riverside Park, shutting down Dakota State (S.D.) in the non-conference doubleheader. The Mustangs won by the scores of 11-0 and 11-1, both games ended in five innings.
Dakota State fell to 4-19 overall record. Morningside lifted their overall record to 11-6.
Game 1 – Morningside (Iowa) 11, Dakota State (S.D.) 0 – FINAL/5 innings
Ellie Cropley kicked off the bottom first frame with a triple for the Mustangs. She scored from DSU's wild pitch for Morningside's first lead of the game at 1-0.
Jayden Wood reached on base by a walk, followed by Lexie Stolen single for MC in the bottom first. Rebecca Riley was hit-by-pitch to set up a bases loaded situation. Mackenzie Lose smashed a grand slam to balloon Mustangs' lead to 5-0, scoring Wood, Stolen and Riley.
Morningside produced another five-run in the bottom second inning, highlighted by another triple by Cropley and a double by Carrington Entringer. The Mustangs widen their lead to 10-0 by the end of the second inning.
MC made it 11-0 in the bottom third after Riley recorded an RBI double.
Madison Aldendifer had a single and a walk for the Trojans. Kailee McFadden and Tatum Ronke also each had a walk. Ronke swiped one base.
Cropley led the Mustangs with two triples and an RBI. Lose had a home run and drove in four runs. Morgan Nixon and Riley each produced two hits. Entringer had a double.
MC outhit DSU 10-1 in the game. The Mustangs left six runners on base compared to the Trojans four runners left on base.
Logan Nussbaum (L, 0-1) recorded the loss in the pitching circle for Dakota State. She worked for 1 1/3 innings and gave up nine runs on six hits. Annalisa Ingui tossed 2 2/3 innings in relief, allowing two runs on four hits.
Hallie Misiaszek (W, 7-2) pitched a complete game shutout victory for Morningside. She registered eight strikeouts.
Game 2 – Morningside (Iowa) 11, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL/5 innings
Morningside used another fast start in the second game of the doubleheader, plating four runs for a 4-0 lead in the bottom first.
The Mustangs exploded for six runs in the bottom second frame as their lead grew to 11-0, highlighted by a pair of 2-RBI doubles by Nixon and Lose.
Dakota State ended their scoring drought with a run scored in the top fourth. Quinn Motichka led off with a double. Poe followed up with an RBI double with one out and score Motichka as the Trojans trailed 10-1.
Lose answered with a solo home run in the bottom fourth to stretch MC's lead to 11-1.
The Mustangs secured the victory after an eight-run mercy rule after five innings.
Poe led the Trojans' offense with a double and an RBI. Motichka added a double and a run scored. Melissa Krapf had a double. Sarah Torres recorded a single.
Nixon went 3-of-3 at the plate with a double, two singles and collected four RBIs for the Mustangs. Lose added a home run, double and an RBI. Kelsey Spongberg had two singles and an RBI. Cropley hit a double.
Morningside tallied 13 hits in the game compared to Dakota State four hits.
Jayme Knauer (L, 0-2) took the loss after working for one-plus inning in the pitching circle for the Trojans. She allowed five runs (one unearned) on four hits. Aldendifer worked for three innings in relief, giving up six runs on nine hits.
Alex Nelson (W, 2-1) earned a complete game victory for the Mustangs. She yielded the Trojans to one run on four hits and recorded four strikeouts.

Dakota State remains on the road as they return back to North Star Athletic Association conference action this weekend. The Trojans play a four-game series at Mayville State (N.D.). The doubleheader kicks off on Saturday at 1 p.m., followed by another doubleheader on Sunday at 12 noon. The four-game series will be held at Jerome Berg Field (football turf field) in Mayville, N.D.
