Bison defeat Trojans in baseball non-conference finale

FARGO, N.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) was unable to score in their non-conference finale Tuesday evening at Newman Outdoor Field, falling to NCAA Division I North Dakota State 11-0 in eight innings.

Dakota State is 3-30 overall record.  NDSU improved to 11-19 overall record.

The Trojans were unable to convert their scoring chance in the opening inning, despite a double from Chris Burke.  DSU also stranded a runner on second base in the top second inning.

North Dakota State plated three runs in the bottom second inning for a 3-0 lead, highlighted by Carter Thompson's two-run home run.  The Bison added a run in the bottom third to extend their lead to 4-0.

Jack Simonsen produced an RBI single, followed by another RBI by Sean Noel to balloon NDSU's lead to 6-0 in the fifth inning.

Leading 9-0 in the bottom eighth inning, Nick Emanuel closed the game by hitting a 2-run home run to secure an 11-0 victory.

Burke led the Trojans with a double.  Alec Gannon, Chase DeWitt and Ryan Jackovich each added a single. 

Emanuel and Thompson each led the Bison with a home run and two RBIs.  Bennett Hostetler and Simonsen each had a hit and two RBIs.  Jake Malec went 3-of-3 at the plate with a triple, two singles and an RBI.

NDSU outhit DSU 10-4 in the game.  The Bison left eight runners on base compared to the Trojans four runners left on base.

Defensively, Tanner Landman and Gannon recorded a double play for Dakota State.

Kyle Gosh (L, 0-1) took the defeat on the pitching mound for DSU.  He worked for 4 2/3 innings and allowed six runs on five hits.  Max Luesebrink, Steven Suarez (struck out two NDSU batters), Trey Randel (recorded two strikeouts) and Andrew Dayton each worked in relief.

Hunter Koep started the game for NDSU and tossed 1 2/3 innings.  Jake Drew (W, 1-2) earned the victory after pitching 2 1/3 shutout innings in relief.  Alec Holcomb and Barron Holtz each pitched two scoreless innings in relief.  Koep, Drew, Holcomb and Holtz each registered two strikeouts.

Dakota State plays its first home games of the year Wednesday afternoon.  The Trojans take on the conference's leader No. 25-ranked Bellevue (Neb.) in the North Star Athletic Association conference doubleheader.  First game, a nine-inning game, is set for 3 p.m., followed by a second game (seven-inning) at Flynn Field.
