MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) outhit Viterbo (Wis.) 9-7 in the third game of the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) baseball tripleheader Friday evening at Flynn Field, but could not come up with the victory as the V-Hawks gained an 8-3 win. The V-Hawks went 2-1 record against the Trojans in the tripleheader.
Dakota State is 4-34 overall record and 2-21 record in North Star conference contests. Viterbo is 11-29 overall record and 6-17 record in league play.
Both teams are still scheduled to play a nine-inning game Saturday afternoon at Flynn Field. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
Noah Bouley and Ryan Ellingson opened up the game with back-to-back walks for Viterbo. Bouley advanced to third base after Nolan Glunz's fly out. Evan Wenberg produced an RBI sacrifice fly to score Bouley to give the V-Hawks the first lead of the game at 1-0.
Adam Lowe and Myles Zimdars also kicked off the top second frame with back-to-back walks for VU. Zach Earll hit an RBI single to score Lowe to extend their lead to 2-0. The V-Hawks made it 3-0 when Zimdars scored home on the same play caused by DSU's defensive error (Earll advanced to second base).
With Earll on third base and Bouley on second base in the top second, Ellingson reached safely on base by a fielder's choice while Earll scored home caused by DSU's defensive miscue to widen VU's lead to 4-0.
Alec Gannon led off the bottom third inning with his first career collegiate home run as the Trojans trailed 4-1. The Trojans were unable to convert more scoring chances as they left the bases full when the third frame ended.
Ellingson hit a single with two outs for the V-Hawks in the top fourth. Glunz reached safely on base caused by Trojans' defensive error and advanced Ellingson to third base. Viterbo extended their lead to 5-1 after Wenberg's RBI single to score Ellingson.
Adam Lowe blasted a lead-off home run to kick off the top fifth to balloon V-Hawks' lead to 6-1. Justin Maxted added an RBI single, while another run was scored after DSU's passed ball to extend VU's lead to 8-1.
Marcos Alvarez led off the bottom sixth with a single for the Trojans. Christian Sanchez followed up with a single with two outs and advanced Alvarez to second base. Gannon produced an RBI single to score Alvarez as the Trojans cut V-Hawks' lead to 8-2 (Sanchez advanced to second base).
Chris Burke followed up with an RBI single to score Sanchez as DSU reduced their deficit by five runs at 8-3 in the bottom sixth (Gannon advanced to third base). Jerrett Plunkett added a walk to set up a bases loaded situation, but the Trojans could not convert their scoring opportunities.
The Trojans left a runner on base in the final inning as the V-Hawks secured the victory.
Gannon was perfect at the plate, going 3-of-3 with a home run, two singles, walk and drove in two runs for Dakota State. Burke added a double, single and an RBI. Alvarez collected a double and single. Jalen Boyd had a single and a walk. Sanchez recorded a single.
Ellingson led the V-Hawks' offense attack with two hits and a run. He swiped two bases. Lowe had a home run and scored two runs. Earll and Maxted each had a hit and an RBI. Wenberg earned a single and two RBIs. Zimdars had a single and two walks.
The Trojans left 11 runners on base compared to the V-Hawks nine runners left on base.
Andrew Dayton (L, 0-2) recorded the defeat, despite giving up two walks and a run in the top first inning for Dakota State. Micah DeHarty worked for 1 1/3 innings and allowed three runs (two unearned) on one hit. Trey Randel pitched for 2 2/3 innings in relief and gave up three runs (one unearned) on four hits. He recorded three strikeouts. Ryan Peterson worked for two outs in the top fifth inning, giving up a run on two hits. Max Luesebrink worked for 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Jared Urbach tossed a shutout seventh inning in relief.
Joe Cliver (W, 3-5) earned the victory on the pitching mound for Viterbo. He pitched five innings and allowed one run on four hits. He struck out eight DSU's batters. Caleb Thompson tossed the sixth inning, giving up two runs on four hits. Peter Rossman closed the game by working the seventh inning and gave up a hit.
