DICKINSON, N.D. – Mayville State (N.D.) outscored Dakota State (S.D.) 28-5 Sunday afternoon at Astoria Field, completing the North Star Athletic Association baseball four-game series sweep. The Comets defeated the Trojans 10-0 in eight innings in the first game and 18-5 in the series finale.
Dakota State fell to 3-21 overall record and 1-11 NSAA conference record. Mayville State improved to 11-16 overall record and 5-7 record in league play.
Game 1 – Mayville State (N.D.) 10, Dakota State (S.D.) 0 – FINAL/8 innings
Mayville State scored at least a run from the second through sixth innings and secured a 10-0 game one win that ended in the bottom eighth with one out.
The Comets grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom second frame, thanks to Adrian Zubia's RBI double and Evyn Yamaguchi's RBI single.
Jared McCorrister led off the bottom third inning with a triple. He made it 3-0 in favor of the Comets after Zachary Foster's RBI sacrifice fly.
MSU extended their lead to 4-0 after Zubia's solo home run in the bottom fourth. McCorrister added a solo home run in the bottom fifth for 5-0 lead.
The Comets hit a pair of 2-run home runs in the sixth inning. Zubia hit a 2-run home run to extend Comets' lead to 7-0. Paxton Ketchum blasted a 2-run home run to balloon MSU's lead to 9-0.
The nine-inning game ended in the bottom eighth as Payton Deluca hit an RBI single with one out for a 10-0 victory.
Dakota State was held to three singles in the game. Jerrett Plunkett, Samuel Drummond and Marcos Alvarez each had a hit. Christian Sanchez reached on base by a walk twice. Jalen Boyd, Plunkett and Tanner Landman each had a walk.
Zubia finished the game by going 4-of-4 with a two home runs, a double, single and collected four runs for Mayville State. Yamaguchi added two doubles, two singles and an RBI. McCorrister hit a home run, single and registered an RBI. Ketchm had a hit and two RBIs.
MSU outhit DSU 14-3 in the game. The Trojans left eight runners on base compared to the Comets four runners left on base.
Chris Burke (L, 0-4) took the loss on the pitching mound for Dakota State. He worked for 5 2/3 innings and allowed nine runs on 11 hits. He recorded three strikeouts. Andrew Dayton pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief, giving up one run on three hits.
Craig Broadman (W, 3-3) earned the pitching victory for Mayville State. He tossed 6 1/3 innings and limited the Trojans to two hits. He registered eight strikeouts. Adam Senden worked for 1 2/3 scoreless inning, giving up a hit.
Game 2 – Mayville State (N.D.) 18, Dakota State (S.D.) 5 – FINAL
Mayville State outscored Dakota State 14-2 in the first three innings in the four-game series finale, cruising to an 18-5 victory.
The Trojans scored the game's first run in the opening inning. Burke led off with a single. Boyd reached on base caused by MSU's defensive error and advanced Burke to second base. Plunkett followed up with a sacrifice bunt to advance Burke to third base and Boyd to second base.
Drummond produced an RBI ground out to score Burke for Trojans' 1-0 lead in the top first.
The Comets answered with two runs in the bottom half of the first frame, thanks to back-to-back RBI doubles by Gunner Garpestad and Zubia for 2-1 lead.
Mayville State plated four runs in the bottom second to widen their lead to 6-1.
Plunkett blasted a solo home run in the top third as the Trojans trailed 6-2. It was his third home run of the season.
The Comets exploded for eight runs in the bottom third to expand their lead to 14-2.
DSU scored twice in the top fifth inning to cut MSU's lead to 14-4. Plunkett hit a single with one out and swiped to second base. Drummond drilled an RBI double to score Plunkett (DSU trailed 14-3). After Micah DeHarty's ground out to advance Drummond to third base, Justin Odlum hit an RBI single to score Drummond as the Trojans trim MSU's lead by ten runs.
The Comets answered with four more runs in the bottom fifth to make it 18-4.
Boyd blasted a lead-off solo home run in the top seventh inning (Trojans down 18-5). It was his first home run this season, his third career home run at Dakota State.
Plunkett finished the game by going 3-of-3 at the plate with a home run, two singles and recorded an RBI. He swiped two bases. Boyd added a home run and an RBI. Drummond added a double, single and drove in two runs. Odlum had a hit and an RBI. Ryan Jackovich and Noah Hammond each registered a single.
Zubia was 3-of-3 at the plate with five RBIs for the Comets. Ketchum, McCorrister each had two hits and two runs scored. Gunner Garpestad added two hits and three RBIs. Quinton Bidon had a hit and three RBIs.
Mayville State tallied 15 hits in the game compared to Dakota State 10 hits. The Comets left 13 runners on base, while the Trojans had eight runners left on base.
Brett Sanchez (L, 1-3) recorded the loss after pitching two innings for DSU. He gave up six runs (one unearned) on six hits. Max Luesebrink, Jared Urbach, Kyle Gosh, Drummond and Boyd also pitched in relief.
Oz Escobar (W, 1-1) posted the win for MSU. He pitched three innings and gave up two runs on four hits. Matthew Johnston tossed two innings in relief, allowing two runs on four hits. Josh Rodriguez worked the final two innings and gave up one run on two hits.

With mid-week spring storm that will be impacting the Midwest region, Dakota State was forced to make schedule changes to their mid-week games.
The Trojans will play at Bellevue (Neb.) in the North Star Athletic Association conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. The times and sites have not been determined. Stay tuned to the DSU Athletics' social media and website for more information when it becomes available.
DSU's nine-inning game at Dordt (Iowa) scheduled for Tuesday have been tentatively scheduled for Wednesday.
