Comets eliminate Trojans from NSAA Softball Tournament, end season

VALLEY CITY, N.D. – Annika Seedborg pitched a complete game for Mayville State (N.D.) as the Comets advanced to play another day Thursday afternoon at the North Star Softball Championships at Tharaldon Field. 

Seedborg held the Trojans to nine hits and three hits, and Mayville State earned a 7-3 win in the loser's out game of the Navy Bracket.

No. 3 seed Mayville State (24-17 overall record) advances to play in another loser-out game Friday at 10 a.m.

Leading 1-0 in the top of the fifth inning, the Comets extended their lead to 3-0 after an RBI double by Amanda Izzo and an RBI groundout by Alissa Foster.

Dakota State cut the deficit to 3-1 on Tatum Ronke's RBI single to left field.  The Comets broke the game wide open though with four runs in the top of the seventh inning, including a two-run single by Sierra Niedge to make it 7-1.

The Trojans got two runs in the bottom seventh inning, but it was not enough to extend their season.  DSU ended their season at 9-35 overall record and 6-21 record in North Star Athletic Association conference games. 

Stefani Gollin (L, 3-11) pitched a complete game for Dakota State, scattering eight hits and seven runs.  Just two of the runs were earned.  Gollin walked one and struck out three batters.

Xitlali Lopez and Nicole Stewart each collected two hits for the Trojans.  Lopez and Ronke each tallied an RBI.  Taylor Poe, Sarah Torres, Ronke, Annalisa Ingui and Melissa Krapf each had a hit.

Seedborg (W, 12-9) earned the win for Mayville State, allowing nine hits and three runs.  She walked once and struck out three hits.

Tai Yamamoto and Amanda Izzo each had two hits for MSU, while Sierra Niedge drove in two runs.

Five seniors ended their career collegiate softball on Thursday.  They are Peyton Brokiewicz, Stefani Gollin, Jayme Knauer, Taylor Poe and Tatum Ronke.
