GLENDALE, Ariz. – Dakota State (S.D.) hit well above .300 in each match on the first day of the Arizona Christian tournament, earning their first victories of the season with a pair of 3-0 sweeps at Arizona State's west campus.
Dakota State lifted their overall record to 2-1. The Trojans conclude their tournament with a pair of matches on Saturday, facing Montana State-Northern and host-team Arizona Christian.
Dakota State (S.D.) 3, Park-Gilbert (Ariz.) 0 – FINAL (25-17, 25-22, 25-13)
- The Trojans hit an astounding .393 (16 kills, 5 errors in 28 attempts) to open up with a 1-0 match lead after a 25-17 victory over the Buccaneers (4-4 overall record).
- DSU held on to win the second set by the score of 25-22 to extend their lead to 2-0. Dakota State finished off the match by cruising past Park 25-13 in the third set, holding the Buccaneers to just two kills.
- Dakota State outhit Park-Gilbert 47-23 in the match. The Trojans hit .316 compared to the Buccaneers .092 hitting percentage.
- Hanna Jellema powered the Trojans' offense attack with 11 kills. Samantha Zell fueled the offense with 10 kills and a season-high hitting percentage of .500. Maddie Polzin added nine kills.
- Rachel Johnson produced 19 set assists for DSU. Nicole Sarringar added 16 assists.
- Barbara Briceno, Jellema and Sarringar each had two service aces. Brinceo had seven digs.
- Autumn Wood led Park with eight kills. Jenifer Lauer recorded 14 assists. Mackenzie Seltz led the team's defense with seven digs.
Dakota State (S.D.) 3, SAGU-Indian (Ariz.) 0 – FINAL (25-22, 25-7, 25-18)
- Dakota State hit over .400 in the first two sets and cruised past SAGU-Indian in the second match Friday. The Trojans hit .435 in the first set and .455 in the second set.
- The Warriors were held to below minus .300 hitting percentage and recorded just five total kills combined in the first two sets. SAGU-Indian had 15 kills and committed 21 attack errors in 71 attempts for a negative .085 hitting efficiency.
- DSU registered season-highs .368 hitting percentage (35 kills with 10 errors in 68 attempts) and 14 service aces. Polzin and Johnson each had four service aces. Payton Johanneson, Peyton Groft and Sarringar each added two aces.
- Jellema propelled the Trojans' attack with 11 kills and hit a season-high .625. Polzin added nine kills.
- Johnson collected 20 set assists, while Sarringar had nine assists. Polzin, Zell and Kelsey Pearson each had two block assists.
- Amaya Yazzie had five kills for the Warriors. Michealynn Ben had 10 assists. Brooke Tallsalt recorded seven digs.
