SALINA, Kan. – Dakota State (S.D.) earned another split on the second day of the La Quinta/Rib Crib Kansas Wesleyan volleyball tournament Saturday at Mabee Arena. The Trojans fell short in another five-set thriller to Montana Western, but closed out the tournament after dominating Friends (Kan.) in three straight sets.
Dakota State is 5-5 overall record returns home Tuesday evening versus Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) at DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans kick off the DSU's homecoming festivities with a junior varsity match at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity match at 7:30 p.m.
Montana Western 3, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL (25-23, 25-23, 13-25, 13-25, 15-12)
- Dakota State smashed a season-high 66 kills, despite a 3-2 setback to Montana Western (6-6 overall record). The Trojans hit .268 in the match (21 errors in 168 swings) compared to the Bulldogs .167 hitting efficiency (16 errors in 168 attempts).
- The Trojans collected 11 service aces, while committing 14 service errors in 109 serves (87.2 service percentage). The Bulldogs were 93.3 percent from the serving line with five aces and six errors in 89 serves.
- MW won the first two sets by identical scores of 25-23. DSU cruised in the third and fourth sets to force the deciding set, thanks to at least .300 hitting percentage in each set for the Trojans. Dakota State smashed 32 kills combined in both sets while holding Montana Western to 11 kills.
- The Bulldogs pulled away past the Trojans 15-12 in the fifth and deciding set. Both teams had eight kills in the fifth set, while MW hit .300 compared to DSU .182 hitting percentage.
- Samantha Zell paced the Trojans' offense with 12 kills. Hannah Viet added 11 kills and hit .348 in the match. Riley Grandpre added 10 kills and registered a hitting percentage of .529. Maddie Polzin and Hanna Jellema each had nine kills. Barbara Briceno tallied eight hills.
- Rachel Johnson posted a double-double of 31 set assists (season-high) and 13 digs for Dakota State. Nicole Sarringar added 19 assists and seven digs.
- Peyton Groft collected a career-high 26 digs for DSU. Briceno added 20 digs. Zell registered four blocks (2 solo, 2 assist).
- Briceno led the Trojans with four service aces. Groft had three aces. Polzin and Grandpre each registered two service aces.
- Jessie Weber produced a double-double of 14 kills and 21 digs for the Bulldogs. Cady Siemion added eight kills and 12 digs. Madison Richtmyer had 19 assists and seven digs. Jessie Weber led MW's defense with 21 digs. Emmah Peterson had six blocks (1 solo, 5 assist).
Dakota State (S.D.) 3, Friends (Kan.) 0 – FINAL (25-15, 25-13, 25-19)
- Dakota State hit an astounding .350 in the match to cruise past Friends (Kan.) in the tournament's finale. The Trojans smashed 45 kills and only committed nine attack errors in 103 swings. The Falcons where held to .153 hitting efficiency (29 kills and 14 errors in 98 attempts).
- DSU hit .235 (12 kills and 4 errors in 34 attempts), followed by .421 hitting efficiency in the second set (18 kills and 2 errors in 38 attempts) and .387 in the third set (15 kills with 3 errors in 31 swings). FU (5-10 overall record) did not hit higher than .161, which occurred in the first set (.156 hitting percentage in the second set and .143 in the third set).
- Dakota State went 2-0 record against members of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) in the tournament. The Trojans defeated host-team Kansas Wesleyan 3-1 Friday.
- Jellema led the Trojans with 11 kills and hit .529 in the match. Briceno earned a double-double of 10 kills and 18 digs. She hit .400. Polzin had seven kills.
- Sarringar tallied 20 set assists and two service aces for DSU. Johnson added 17 assists and three aces.
- Groft collected 15 digs for Dkota State. Payton Johanneson had three block assists. Viet also had three blocks (1 solo, 2 assist).
- Samantha Naake led Friends with 12 kills and registered a hitting percentage of .524. Sarah Lazar added seven kills. Jana Boston recorded 25 assists and nine digs. Destani Garten had 14 digs.
