DSU football wins for the community of Madison, earns 38-21 homecoming victory

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) kicked off the final non-conference football game with a fast start on a sunny weather Saturday afternoon, rolling to a 38-21 homecoming victory over NCAA Division III Wisconsin-Stevens Point at Trojan Field in the second all-time meeting. 

The football game was free of admission for everyone, as well as tailgate for the community in a way of showing thank you and support to everyone that helped the recovery process from the devastating flooding last week.

Dakota State improved their overall record to 2-1 and remained undefeated at home with a 2-0 record.  Wisconsin-Stevens Point, a member of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, fell to 1-2 overall record.

FIRST QUARTER

  • The Pointers committed a turnover in the opening drive of the game, setting up the scoring drive for the Trojans.  WSP Matt Urmanski's pass was intercepted by DSU's Wyatt Sanford at the WSP's 37-yard line with fourteen minutes and fifteen seconds on the clock.
  • Dakota State used three plays for 36 yards on the ensuing possession for a touchdown, thanks to a 31-yard pass from Torren Devericks to Josh GilesBrodie Frederiksen rushed for a 3-yard touchdown on the next play, followed by Casey Bourque's PAT extra-point for DSU 7-0 lead with 13:11 left in the first.
  • Wisconsin-Stevens Point was forced to punt on their next drive after recording nine plays for 22 yards in 5:21. DSU quickly answered on the next drive as Frederiksen rushed for the longest rush of the game, a 68-yard touchdown to extend their lead.  Bourque added a successful PAT extra-point kick to widen Trojans' lead to 14-0 with less than seven minutes on the clock.
  • The Pointers marched down the field on the next possession, recording 11 plays for 75 yards in 5:04.  WSP produced five first-downs in the scoring drive.  Urmanski rushed for an 11-yard touchdown, followed by Victor Ponterio's PAT extra-point kick to cut DSU's lead to 14-7 with 1:55 left in the quarter.

SECOND QUARTER

  • Both teams were unable to score much of the second quarter before the Trojans scored its only points just before halftime.
  • Dakota State started its drive on DSU's 37-yard line with 4:59 remaining in the second quarter.  Facing a third-and-12 situation on DSU's 35-yard line, Devericks connected to Giles for a 16-yard pass that resulted in first-down on WSP's 49-yard line.
  • The Trojans added a first-down after a 16-yard reception by Josh Giese to WSP's 30-yard line.  DSU was credited for another first-down after a pass interference penalty by the Pointers that set the ball on WSP's 8-yard line.
  • DSU had to settle down for a 26-yard field goal by Casey Bourque, expanding their lead to 17-7 with less than 30 seconds to go before halftime.
  • Dakota State outgained Wisconsin-Stevens Point 216-126 in total offensive yards in the first-half.

THIRD QUARTER

  • Wyatt Sanford caught his second interception of the game in the third quarter, setting up another Trojans' scoring drive.  He caught the interception on DSU's 28-yard line with 9:11 on the clock.
  • The Trojans moved the ball after using eight plays for 72 yards in 3:23 as Frederiksen rushed for a 16-yard touchdown on a third-and-nine situation.  Bourque's PAT extra-point kick was good as Dakota State expanded their lead to 24-7 with 5:48 left in the third.
  • The Pointers suffered another turnover as Jordan Thomas intercepted Urmanski's pass on DSU's 12-yard line and returned it for 20 yards to DSU's 40-yard line with 5:02 on the clock.
  • Frederiksen opened the drive with a 24-yard rush to WSP's 24-yard line for DSU.  After a pair of rushes by Jose Sanchez, Devericks threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Hirsch for a first-and-goal on WSP's 1-yard line.  Frederiksen would follow up with a 1-yard touchdown run, while Bourque added a successful PAT extra point kick to make it 31-7 in favor of DSU with 1:41 left in the third.
  • Dakota State outscored Wisconsin-Stevens Point 14-0 in the third quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER

  • Wisconsin-Stevens Point ended their scoring drought with a touchdown in the fourth quarter.  The Pointers registered 14 plays for 75 yards in 3:32 as Urmanski threw a 16-yard touchdown to Ernie LaSpisa.  Ponterio converted the PAT extra-point kick as WSP trailed 31-14 with 9:01 remaining.
  • Wyatt Sanford produced his third interception of the game, setting up another scoring drive for the Trojans.  He intercepted Urmasnki's pass on the 50-yard line and returned it for 15 yards to WSP's 35-yard line with 5:31 left.
  • Sanchez opened the drive with a 10-yard rush to WSP's 25-yard line for DSU.  The Trojans converted their fourth-down conversion as Devericks connected to Hirsch for a 22-yard pass to WSP's 3-yard line.  Luellman followed up with a 3-yard touchdown run, while Bourque added the PAT extra-point kick to widen Dakota State's lead to 38-14 with 2:45 left.
  • The Pointers used 12 plays in 66 yards in 1:48 on their ensuing possession, scoring a touchdown.  Jahi Stigall rushed for a 2-yard touchdown, followed by Ponterio's PAT extra-point kick as they trailed 38-21 with 57 seconds left.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Frederiksen rushed 23 times for a season-high 233 yards with four rushing touchdowns for the Trojans.  He averaged 10.1 yards per rush in the game.  He finished the game with 240 all-purpose yards.  Brenner Furlong added six rushes for 20 yards.  Sanchez had five rushes for 15 yards.  Luellman recorded a rushing touchdown.
  • Devericks completed eight passes in 21 attempts for 135 yards for Dakota State.  Hirsch caught three passes for 57 yards.  Giles added two catches for 47 yards.  Giese had a reception for 16 yards. 
  • Bourque converted all five PAT extra-point kicks and a field goal in the game for DSU.  He registered seven kick-offs for a total of 421 yards that included three touchbacks.  He averaged 60.1 yards per kick-off.
  • Riley Janke led the Trojans' defense with 11 tackles (7 solo, 4 assist).  He also had a game-high three quarterback sacks for a loss of 34 yards.  He registered 4.5 tackles-for-loss of 39.5 yards.  Marcus Vanden Bosch and Cole McCarty each added 10 tackles.  Vanden Bosch had 1.5 sacks for a loss of 12 yards.
  • Karson Lindblad and John Trout each had nine tackles for Dakota State.  Trout recorded a sack.
  • DSU's defense caught six interceptions in the game, thanks to a hat trick (three interceptions) by Wyatt SanfordJordan Thomas, Jason Sakamoto-Ryan and Noah Guse each also recorded an interception.
  • ShamaJ Williams ran 19 times and was held to 38 yards for Wisconsin-Stevens Point.  Stilgall added nine rushes for 36 yards and a touchdown.
  • Urmanski was 22-of-45 with 269 yards in the air with a touchdown, but he committed six interceptions in the game for the Pointers.  He was sacked six times and recorded a negative 30 rushing yards.
  • Nine different receivers (with six receivers recording at least 20 receiving yards) recorded at last a reception, led by LaSpisa with four catches for 49 yards and a touchdown.  Williams added four catches for 26 yards. 
  • Kameron Kryzanski tallied six tackles for Wisconsin-Stevens Point.  Berkley Corvino, James Fay, Allen Jones, and Donovan Lucas each had five tackles.  Jawahn Downing had a quarterback sack.

TEAM COMPARISONS

  • Dakota State racked up 407 total offensive yards in the game compared to Wisconsin Stevens Point 313 yards.  The Trojans averaged 6.4 yards per play, while the Pointers averaged 3.7 yards per play. 
  • The Trojans rushed for a season-high 272 yards, while holding the Pointers to 44 yards.  It was the lowest rushing yards allowed for DSU this season. 
  • WSP threw 269 yards in the air compared to DSU 135 passing yards.
  • The Trojans (30 minutes, 30 seconds) held the ball one minute more than the Pointers (29 minutes, 30 seconds).
  • Dakota State was 3-of-12 on third-down conversions.  Wisconsin-Stevens Point converted 9-of-20 third-downs. 

RECORDS SET

  • Dakota State set a new school team record for most interceptions in the game with six interceptions.  The previous record was five interceptions in a single-game three times, with the last occurrence for over 15 years ago.
  • Caleb Nielsen recorded three punts for a total of 147 yards in the game for DSU.  He averaged 49.0 yards per punt, which is third-best punt average in a single-game in the Trojan football record book.  Nielsen recorded a long punt of 67 yards.
  • Wyatt Sanford's three interceptions is one interception shy of tying the DSU single-season school record.  Calvin Aus holds the single-season school record of four interceptions.

UP NEXT

Dakota State opens their seven-game North Star conference schedule on the road next Saturday.  The Trojans visit Valley City State (N.D.) at Shelly Ellig Field – Lokken Field.  Kick-off is set for 2 p.m. in Valley City, N.D.
