WBK: Trojans kick off 2020 year by hitting century mark in victory

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) returned home Saturday evening, hitting the 2020 season with a women's basketball non-conference victory over Oglala Lakota (S.D.).  The Trojans hit the century mark for the second time this season, shaking off their slow start and cruising to a 102-39 victory over the Lady Bravehearts.

Dakota State improved to 5-10 overall record (4-4 record at home this season).  Oglala Lakota was playing their season opener Saturday evening.

The Trojans resume to their full North Star Athletic Association conference schedule next weekend on the road.  DSU makes their first stop at W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse on Friday evening, visiting Valley City State (N.D.) at 5:30 p.m.  Next Saturday, Dakota State travels to Scott Gymnasium to take on Dickinson State (N.D.) at 4 p.m. (Central Time)/3 p.m. (Mountain Time).

Dakota State (S.D.) 102, Oglala Lakota (S.D.) 39 – FINAL

  • Both teams struggled offensively in the first ten minutes of the game, where the Trojans hold on to a slim four-point lead.  Leading 11-10, Riley Peters hit a 3-pointer (assisted by Courtney Menning) to extend DSU's lead to 14-10 by the end of the first period.
  • DSU shot 5-of-15 from the field (33.3 percent), while OLC was 3-of-10 field goals (30 percent) in the first quarter.
  • Holding a 17-14 lead in the second period, the Trojans went on a 7-0 scoring outburst for the first double-digit lead of the game at 24-13 after a basket by Savannah Walsdorf with 7:36 on the clock.
  • Dakota State held Oglala Lakota to five points in the final 7:11 of the second, ballooning their lead to 48-18 by halftime (24-4 scoring run). 
  • The Trojans shot 13-of-21 from the field in the second quarter (61.9 percent) and limited the Lady Bravehearts to 3-of-7 field goals.  DSU outscored OLC 34-8 in the second period.
  • Dakota State maintained control for the rest of the game, outscoring Oglala Lakota 54-21 in the final twenty minutes of the game.
  • DSU was 21-of-45 from the field (46.7 percent) compared to OLC 8-of-33 field goals (24.2 percent) in the second-half.
  • All 13 Trojan players scored in the game and grabbed at least one rebound.  Lindsey Vogl paced DSU with a season-high 22 points, draining a total of seven 3-pointers in the game.  She tied her career-best seven 3-point field goals made in the game, tying for the third-most 3-point field goals in a game (previously she hit 7 3-pointers versus College of Saint Mary, Neb. on Oct. 27, 2017). 
  • Jessi Giles added 20 points on her 9-of-17 field goal shooting.  Walsdorf tallied 13 points and stole the ball a game-high six times.  Morgan Koepsell scored eight points, earned seven rebounds, dished out four assists and registered three blocks.
  • Menning had eight points, four rebounds and four assists for DSU.  Peters, Cheylee Nagel and Lex Evans each had six points.  Sidney Fick, Olivia Breske and Lexi Robson each contributed four assists.
  • Robson recorded four steals in the game for Dakota State.  Breske grabbed seven rebounds, while Walsdorf pulled down six rebounds. 
  • Miracle Spotted Bear led the Lady Bravehearts with 18 points.  She also had six rebounds.  Jordianja Clifford scored nine points.  Michelle Johnson earned six rebounds.
  • Dakota State shot 48.1 percent overall from the field (39-of-81 field goals) compared to Oglala Lakota 28 percent (14-of-50 field goals).
  • The Trojans tied a season-high 15 3-pointers in the game.  The Lady Bravehearts had seven 3-pointers.
  • DSU outrebounded OLC 52-29.  Dakota State outscored Oglala Lakota 29-0 in transition points, 37-8 in points off turnovers, 48-8 inside the paint, 23-1 in second-chance points and 54-3 in bench points.
