MADISON, S.D. – Six Dakota State Trojan women's basketball players hit double-digits in scoring and shot a sizzling 53.6 percent overall from the field, cruising to 94-52 non-conference victory over Valley City State (N.D.) on the second day of the Dakota Clash at DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans' defense held the Vikings to 28.8 percent shooting from the field.
Dakota State completed the Dakota Clash with a 2-0 record, averaging 96.5 points per game in the tournament. The Trojans raised their overall record to 6-3. Valley City State, who was playing their season opener this weekend, finished with a 1-1 record in the tournament.
Mayville State (N.D.) defeated Presentation (S.D.) 59-50 in the first game Saturday. MSU finished the tournament with a 1-1 record, while the Saints fell to 0-2 record.
Dakota State takes a week off before returning to action on Saturday, Dec. 5. The Trojans begin their 14-game North Star Athletic Association schedule, hosting Bellevue (Neb.). Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse.
Dakota State (S.D.) 94, Valley City State (N.D.) 52 – FINAL
- Valley City State took the first lead of the game at 2-0 with a basket by Macey Kvilvang with nine minutes, forty-six seconds on the clock in the first quarter.
- Trailing 6-5 with 6:25 on the clock, Elise Aslesen scored five straight points to spark DSU's 15-0 outburst run for nearly three minutes. Shaylee DeBeer capped Trojans' scoring run with a basket for a 20-6 lead with 3:38 left in the first period.
- DSU led VCSU 26-13 after the first quarter, thanks to 55.6 percent field goal shooting (10-of-18 field goals). The Vikings were held to 31.6 percent shooting from the field (6-of-19 field goals).
- Savannah Walsdorf kicked off the second quarter by scoring eight straight points, including a pair of 3-pointers as the Trojans widen their lead to 34-13 with 7:57 on the clock.
- Dakota State led as many as 20 points in the second period, outscoring Valley City State 19-12 to grab a 45-25.
- The Trojans were 50 percent from the field in the first half, making 16 baskets in 32 attempts. The Vikings were held to 25 percent field goal shooting (9-of-36 field goals).
DSU maintained control throughout the second half. The Trojans held their lead between 22- and 29-point, leading 65-36 by the end of the third quarter. Dakota State outscored Valley City State 20-11 in the third.- The Trojans recorded its biggest lead of the game at 90-46 with 2:24 remaining after a basket by DeBeer.
- DSU outscored VCSU 29-16 in the final quarter to secure the victory.
- Dakota State shot a blazing 56.8 percent from the field in the second half (21-of-37 field goals) compared to Valley City State 33.3 percent (10-of-30 field goals).
- Walsdorf paced the Trojans with 19 points on her 8-of-14 field goal shooting and 3-of-4 from the 3-point arc. She also had four assists, four steals and four rebounds in the game.
- Aselsen added 16 points (6-of-10 field goals), four rebounds and four steals for DSU. She had two blocked shots. Courtney Menning tallied scored 13 points off the bench (5-of-7 field goals). Jessi Giles had 12 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
- DeBeer and Morgan Koepsell each scored 10 points off the bench. DeBeer contributed five assists and stole the ball twice. Koepsell pulled down five rebounds and registered three blocks. Lexi Robson had six rebounds and five assists.
- Kvilvang led the Vikings with 17 points (7-of-9 free-throws). Allie Critchley had seven points, six rebounds and three steals. Dani Schwanke and Maara Nelson each had six rebounds.
Dakota State was 37-of-69 from the field compared to Valley City State 19-of-66 field goals. The Trojans were 9-of-25 from the 3-point line, while the Vikings were 2-of-10 -pointers. VCSU was 12-of-17 free-throws (70.6 percent) compared to DSU's 11-of-22 free-throws (50 percent).- Valley City State outrebounded Dakota State 44-42 in the game.
- The Trojans forced the Vikings to 29 turnovers. DSU outscored VCSU 29-9 in points off turnovers, 38-20 inside the paint and 38-13 in bench points.
