MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) continued their red-hot winning streak Friday evening after storming past Dickinson State (N.D.) at the DSU Fieldhouse with a final score of 101-60. The Trojans, coupled with No. 14-ranked Mayville State (N.D.) 78-56 road defeat to La Crosse, Wis. moved within one-half game behind for first place in the North Star Athletic Association women's basketball conference standings.
It was the third time this season that the Trojans hit the century mark.
After a 2-9 start, Dakota State had won 13 times in the last 16 games to raise their overall record to 15-12. The Trojans won their last nine games, the first time since the 1983-84 season that DSU had won nine consecutive games. DSU's nine-game winning streak also tied as the fourth best in the school record with the 1978-79 team.
Dakota State swept the NSAA season series with Dickinson State for the third straight year, winning the last six meetings. The Trojans won the first meeting earlier this season by the score of 82-56 in Dickinson, N.D.
The Blue Hawks fell to 8-17 overall record and 4-8 record in North Star Athletic Association conference contests.
The Trojans are back in action on Saturday afternoon as they host Valley City State University (N.D.) in a key North Star Athletic Association women's basketball conference battle. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. Senior Day will be held after the conclusion of the women's game.
Dakota State (S.D.) 101, Dickinson State (N.D.) 60 – FINAL
- Dakota State and Dickinson State went through two ties in the first two minutes of the game. Knotted at 4-4, the Trojans went to score six straight points including back-to-back baskets by Savannah Walsdorf to open a 10-4 lead. The Blue Hawks were forced to burn their first timeout of the game with 6:24 to go in the first period.
- Olivia Breske ended the first quarter for the Trojans with a basket inside the paint, ballooning their lead to 27-10.
- Dakota State never let Dickinson State lead them in points at the end of each quarter, maintaining double-digit lead for the rest of the game. The Trojans outscored the Blue Hawks 29-21 in the second period to widen their lead to 56-31 by halftime.
DSU shot 22-of-37 from the field in the first half (59.5 percent) and held DiSU to 11-of-30 from the field (36.7 percent).- The Trojans outscored the Blue Hawks 26-16 in the third period as their lead grew to 82-47.
- Lindsey Vogl drained a 3-pointer as DSU hit the century point at 100-60 with 1:34 remaining in the game.
- Jessi Giles had another phenomenal performance tonight, racking up 25 points on her 9-of-14 field goal shooting and 5-of-8 from the 3-point arc for the Trojans. She also stole the ball four times. Walsdorf added 17 points (7-of-11 field goals).
- Vogl scored 12 points off the bench for DSU. Sidney Fick and Morgan Koepsell each added 10 points.
- Walsdorf grabbed five rebounds and stole the ball five times for Dakota State. Koepsell added five rebounds and two blocks. Ashlyn Macdonald dished out a game-high six assists. Courtney Menning and Leix Robson each produced four assists.
- Dickinson State was led by Sydney Clark who had 14 points and Ashlie Larson with 10 points. Clark had four rebounds and two assists.
- Dakota State shot a blazing 57.8 percent overall from the field, making 37 baskets in 64 attempts. Dickinson State was held to 36.2 percent from the field (21-of-58 field goals).
- The Trojans drained 14 3-pointers in 29 tries (48.3 percent) compared to the Blue Hawks 28.6 percent from the 3-point line (8-of-28 3-pointers).
The Trojans collected 16 steals in the game compared to the Blue Hawks six steals. Dakota State produced 28 assists, while Dickinson State recorded 11 assists.- DSU outrebounded DiSU 38-29 in the game. The Trojans outscored the Blue Hawks 21-7 in transition points, 31-10 in points off turnovers, 44-24 inside the paint and 39-22 in bench points.
