Trojans drop two softball games after PC Dome Day 1 Tournament

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Dakota State Trojan softball team was back in action Friday at the PC Dome Tournament on the campus of Presentation (S.D.).  DSU lost both games, falling to Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) with a final score of 7-4, despite a seven-run third inning surge by the Tigers.  The Trojans also fell to No. 22-ranked Morningside (Iowa) 14-2.

DSU (0-6 overall record) will face North Star Athletic Association preseason conference favorite to win the league title, No. 10-ranked Valley City State (N.D.) Saturday at 2 p.m.  DSU wraps up the tournament with a contest against Jamestown (N.D.) at 4 p.m.

Game 1:  Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) 7, Dakota State (S.D.) 4 – FINAL

  • Dakota State played Dakota Wesleyan last weekend in the PC Dome Tournament and fell by the final score of 7-4.
  • The Trojans kicked with a 1-0 lead in the top second frame, thanks to Vinitzia Blanco's lead-off solo home run.
  • Blanco hit her second home run of the game, hitting a 2-run home run to balloon DSU's lead to 3-0 in the top third inning.
  • Dakota Wesleyan exploded for seven runs in the bottom half of the third inning, highlighted by Alyssa Garcia's grand slam to put Tigers up 4-3.  DWU added three more runs to make it 7-3 lead.
  • DSU's Sarah Torres and Nicole Stewart hit back-to-back singles with one out (Torres advanced to third base after Stewart's single).  Xotchil Lopez drilled an RBI double to score Torres as the Trojans trailed 7-4 in the top fourth.
  • Dakota State totaled 13 hits, while Dakota Wesleyan totaled eight hits.  The Trojans left 13 runners on base compared to the Tigers seven runners left on base.
  • DSU was led by Blanco, who scored two runs in the game.  She also achieved three of the team's four RBIs after hitting a pair of home runs in the game.
  • Stewart tallied three singles in the game for the Trojans.  Xotchil Lopez collected two doubles.  Torres and Rosie Philop each added two singles.  Madison Aldendifer had a hit.  Julia Andersen and Blanco each reached on base by a walk twice. 
  • Seven different Dakota Wesleyan players scored a run in the game.  Garcia grabbed four of the Tigers' six RBIs, thanks to a grand slam.  She also had a single.  Mikael Smith recorded two singles.  Adrianna Thomason and Julia Kelley each registered a single.
  • Xotchil Lopez (L, 0-1) recorded the defeat after pitching 2 1/3 innings.  She gave up six hits and seven runs (two unearned).  Xitlali Lopez tossed 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief, yielding two hits.  She struck out four DWU batters.
  • Kyllie Ramirez started the game for the Tigers, pitching 3 1/3 innings.  She allowed 11 hits and four runs. Devany Farris (W, 2-2) recorded the victory after working 3 2/3 shutout innings in relief.  She limited the Trojans to two hits.

Game 2- Morningside (Iowa) 14, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL/5 innings

  • Morningside scored at least in all five innings, rolling past Dakota State 14-2 in the second game of the tournament Friday.
  • The Mustangs racked up five runs in the opening inning, highlighted by a pair of 2-RBI doubles by Sydney Petersen and Kelsey Spongberg.  MC made it 6-0 in the top second after an RBI single by Petersen.
  • Dakota State scored twice in the bottom half of the second frame.  Xitlali Lopez and Annalisa Ingui led off with back-to-back singles.  Blanco followed up with an RBI double to score Lopez an Ingui, trailing 6-2.
  • MC scored three times in the third, four times in the fourth and once in the fifth inning to secure the victory.
  • Ingui and Xitlali Lopez each scored a run and recorded a single for the Trojans.  Blanco led the Trojans' offense attack with a double and drove in two runs.  Aldendifer and Xotchil Lopez each added a hit.
  • Cameron scored three times for Morningside.  Spongberg ended with four RBIs, two singles and a double.  Petersen hit two doubles, single and drive in three runs.
  • Morningside outhit Dakota State 15-5. 
  • DSU's Faith Danner (L, 0-2) recorded the defeat after pitching two innings, giving up seven hits and six runs.  Aldendifer tossed the third inning in relief and allowed three runs on one hit.  Xotchil Lopez worked the final two innings, giving up five runs on seven hits. 
  • Alex Nelson (W, 2-0) earned the win in the pitching circle for MC.  She pitched four innings, giving up five hits and two runs.  Lisa Bolton tossed a shutout fifth inning in relief.
