BELLEVUE, NEB. – The Dakota State (S.D.) Trojan men's basketball team faced the conference's champion Bellevue (Neb.) Bruins on Friday evening in their final North Star Athletic Association contest of the 2019-20 season at Gordon Lozier Center. The Bruins defeated the Trojans by the score of 89-64 in the regular-season finale.
Dakota State dropped to 8-22 overall record and finished the North Star conference schedule with a 4-10 record. Bellevue, receiving votes in the latest NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, won their seventh straight game to raise their overall record to 23-7 and finished the NSAA conference with a 13-1 record.
The Trojans prepare for the North Star Athletic Association men's basketball conference postseason tournament on the road on Tuesday evening. Dakota State, the No. 7 seed in the conference tournament, visit No. 2 seed Mayville State (N.D.) with a 7 p.m. tip-off at Lewy Lee Fieldhouse in Mayville, N.D.
(RV) Bellevue (Neb.) 89, Dakota State (S.D.) 64 – FINAL
- Bellevue never trailed in the forty minutes, rolling to the victory over Dakota State. There was one tie recorded in the game at 2-2 after a basket by Gare Ewefada with nineteen minutes and seventeen seconds on the clock.
- The Bruins opened with a 17-9 lead after a basket by Niamey Harris with 13:14 on the clock in the first. Josh McGreal scored the next six points as the Trojans cut BU's lead to 17-15 with less than twelve minutes remaining in the first half.
- Bellevue stormed to a 50-36 halftime lead, thanks to their 54.3 percent field goal shooting in the first twenty minutes (19-of-35 field goals) and drained nine 3-pointers in 17 tries. DSU shot 51.9 percent from the field (14-of-27 field goals) and 4-of-9 3-pointers.
- BU maintained control for the rest of the game, outscoring DSU 39-28 in the second half. Bellevue shot 48.5 percent from the field (16-of-33 field goals) and held Dakota State to 26.7 percent (8-of-30 field goals).
- Ewefada collected a season-high 21 points for the Trojans. He also had two assists, two rebounds and two steals. McGreal added 19 points (7-of-11 field goals) and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. He had a block. Brady Elder scored 11 points and produced four assists.
- Sawyer Koch scored six points and pulled down five rebounds for DSU. Gavin Schipper tallied five points, seven rebounds and contributed two assists.
- Bellevue was led by Lewis Hayes, who racked up 17 points. He had five rebounds. Amenofis Mitchell added 15 points and four assists. Connor Dukes scored 14 points and stole the ball twice. Isaiah Bates had 13 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Jaron Dickson had 10 points and registered a game-high eight assists.
- Bellevue was 35-for-68 (51.5 percent) field goals and 14-for-32 (43.8 percent) in 3-point shots. Dakota State was 22-for-57 (38.6 percent) field goals and 7-for-18 (38.9 percent) from the 3-point line.
- The Bruins totaled eight steals and two blocks in the game. The Trojans had three steals and two blocks.
- Dakota State was 13-for-18 (72.2 percent) from the free-throw line, compared to Bellevue being 5-for-6 (83.3 percent) at the free-throw line.
- BU outrebounded DSU 39-33.
