CBA: Trojans capture first doubleheader sweep over Falcons

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Dakota State University (S.D.) baseball team went 2-0 record in their first two games of a four-game series against Kansas Christian Thursday afternoon at KC Urban Youth Academy.  The Trojans closed the first game strong, despite a 4-4 tie and scored four runs in the final two innings for an 8-4 victory.  DSU's Carver Hultgren tossed a no-hitter in a 4-1 game two victory over KCC to complete their first doubleheader sweep of the season.

The Trojans now hold a 3-5 overall record after defeating the Falcons. Kansas Christian fell to 3-7 record.

Dakota State will face Kansas Christian in another doubleheader Friday afternoon.  First game is set for 12 p.m.

Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 8, Kansas Christian (Kan.) 4 – FINAL

  • Dakota State came out strong in game 1, scoring four of their eight total runs at the top of the second inning.  Esai Hernandez led off the second with a double for DSU.  Mason Macaluso reached on base by a walk.  Ryan McDaniel reached safely on base caused by KCC's defensive error, allowing Hernandez to score to give Trojans a 1-0 lead.
  • Chris Kropuenske drilled a 2-RBI triple to score Macaluso and Jackson O'Neal (reached on base by fielder's choice) to widen their lead to 3-0 in the top third.  The Falcons committed a balk to allow Kropuenske to score for 4-0 DSU lead.
  • Kansas Christian scored once in the bottom second, trimming DSU's lead to 4-1.  Stay'Jawn Hunter led off with a double and advanced to third after La'Quandre Williams' single.  He scored home after Matt Perich's RBI fielder choice.
  • The Falcons plated two runs in the bottom third, thanks to Cole Henley's RBI triple.  He scored home after Hunter's RBI sacrifice fly as the Trojans' lead went down to 4-3.
  • Chris Hunter led off the bottom fifth with a double for KCC.  CT Stacker followed up with an RBI single to knot the game at 4-4.
  • The Trojans answered with a run in the top sixth frame.  Macaluso reached safely on base caused by KCC's defensive outfielder error.  O'Neal produced a two-out RBI single to score Macaluso as DSU regained their lead to 5-4.
  • Dakota State scored three more runs to balloon their lead in the top seventh.  Mike Vohnoutka and Samuel Drummond kicked off with back-to-back singles.  Hernandez drilled a 2-RBI double with one out, scoring Vohnoutka and Drummond for 7-4 lead.
  • The Trojans made it 8-4 after Ryan McDaniel's RBI single to score Hernandez in the top seventh.  DSU's defense secured the victory after recording three straight outs in the bottom half of the seventh frame.
  • Dakota State was led Hernandez, who achieved two runs, two doubles and drove in two runs.  Macaluso also scored two runs.  McDaniel hit two singles and tallied two RBIs.  Kropuenske had a triple and collected two RBIs.  O'Neal had a hit and an RBI.  Drummond had a single.
  • Kansas Christian's Chris Hunter, Stacker, Henley, and Stay'Jawn Hunter all collected a run for the Falcons.  Stacker and Williams each had two hits.
  • Devin DeBoer (W, 2-1) pitched six innings to earn the victory for Dakota State.  He gave up four runs on seven hits.  He struck out four KCC's batters.  Kevin Krumm tossed a shutout seventh inning in relief.
  • Henley pitched a complete game despite the setback for the Falcons.  He allowed eight runs (three unearned) on nine hits. 

Game 2 – Dakota State (S.D.) 4, Kansas Christian (Kan.) 1 – FINAL

  • The Trojans used their previous win against the Falcons as fuel to dominate in game 2.
  • Dakota State scored twice in the top of the first, thanks to Drummond and Kropuenske who each scored for the Trojans.  Jace Pribyl produced an RBI single to score Drummond for a 1-0 lead.  With Kropuenske on third base after Hernandez's fielder choice, Kropuenske scored home caused by KCC's wild pitch to widen their lead to 2-0.
  • Falcon Colin Henley led off the bottom third by being hit-by-pitch by the Trojans.  He advanced to second base after a sacrifice bunt by Abram Stewart.  Colin Henley advanced to third base caused by a defensive error by DSU.  He scored home on the next pitch after a wild pitch committed by the Trojans (DSU led 2-1).
  • Dakota State added a run in the top fifth to make it 3-1, highlighted by Macaluso's RBI double to score Pribyl who hit a single with one out.
  • Kropuenske smashed a double with one out in the top seventh.  Pribyl followed up with an RBI single to bring Kropuensek home as the Trojans stretched their lead to 4-1.
  • Dakota State shut down the Falcons in the final inning to give Hultgren's its first no-hitter victory in 15 years. 
  • DSU had seven hits in the game, led by Pribyl with three hits.  Kropuenske had a double and single. Pribyl collected two RBIs.  Macaluso also had an RBI.
  • Hultgren (W, 1-0) put on an outstanding performance on the pitching mound, tossing a no-hitter against the Falcons.  It was the first time since 2005 (Matt Schuster) that a Trojan pitcher pitched a no-hitter. Asa Patterson also pitched a no-hitter for the Trojans in 2004.
  • Coby Henley pitched a complete game for Kansas Christian, giving up four runs (one unearned) on seven hits.
