SALINA, Kan. – Dakota State (S.D.) played its season-opening doubleheader Saturday at Dean Evans Stadium, visiting Kansas Wesleyan of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC). The Coyotes held off the Trojans by the scores of 5-1 and 7-5.
DSU dropped their overall record to 0-2. KWU improved their overall record to 2-3.
Dakota State and Kansas Wesleyan is scheduled to complete their three-game series Sunday afternoon with a single game. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
Game 1 – Kansas Wesleyan 5, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL
- The game was scoreless through 4 1/3 innings of the inning before Kansas Wesleyan exploded for four runs.
- Spencer Keane opened the offense outburst with a one-out single in the bottom fifth inning. He swiped to second base. William Dryburgh added a single.
- Austin Cross drilled a 2-RBI double to center field and scored Keane and Dryburgh to give KWU a 2-0 lead. Cross stole to third base. Tyler Latham followed up with an RBI single to score Cross to balloon the Coyotes' lead to 3-0.
- KWU made it 4-0 when Latham scored home caused by DSU's wild pitch in the bottom fifth frame.
- Dakota State snapped their scoring drought with a run scored in the top sixth inning. Chris Kropuenske led off with a walk. Jace Pribyl smashed an RBI double to score Kropuenske as the Trojans trailed 4-1.
- Kansas Wesleyan extended their lead to 5-1 after Cross' RBI single.
- DSU left one runner on base when the game ended, securing the victory for KWU. The Coyotes outhit the Trojans 8-3 in the game.
- Pribyl had a double and drove in a run for Dakota State. Kropuenske and Samuel Drummond each added a hit. Drummond, Kropuenske, and Micah DeHarty each reached on base by a walk.
- Cross was 2-of-3 at the plate with three RBIs for Kansas Wesleyan. Keane added two singles. Trey Lopez had a double. Dryburgh, Latham, ad Jeffrey Cochran each tallied a single.
- Devin DeBoer (L, 0-1) took the loss on the pitching mound for DSU after 4 1/3 innings of work. He allowed four runs on five hits. He struck out five KWU's batters. Carver Hultgren pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief, giving up one run on three hits. He recorded four strikeouts.
- Jake Olofson (W, 1-1) tossed a complete game for KWU. He struck out 12 DSU batters and yielded one run on three hits.
Game 2 – Kansas Wesleyan 7, Dakota State (S.D.) 5 – FINAL
- Jackson O'Neal and Drummond kicked off the second game of the doubleheader with back-to-back singles. Pribyl reached safely on base caused by KWU's defensive miscue and scored O'Neal for DSU 1-0 lead.
- The Coyotes exploded for four runs in the bottom half of the first frame, thanks to Dalton Bishop's 3-run home run for a 4-1 lead. Prior to Bishop's at-bat, Lopez hit an RBI single to knot the game at 1-1.
- Latham led off the bottom third with a single for KWU. He advanced to second base on a passed ball and third base caused by DSU's defensive error. Dalton Whitaker hit a two-out RBI single to score Latham as the Coyotes' lead grew to 5-1.
- Kansas Wesleyan made it 7-1 after scoring from DSU's wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Cross.
- Dakota State mounted a comeback in the top fifth inning, plating four runs. Drummond reached on base after an error committed by KWU. He advanced to second base on the same play. Mason Macaluso hit a single and advanced Drummond to third base.
- Kropuenske reached on base by a walk and advanced Macaluso to second base. On the same play, Drummond scored home caused by Coyotes' wild pitch as DSU trailed 7-2.
- Pribyl followed up with a single to set up a bases loaded with one out situation for Dakota State in the top fifth. Ryan Jackovich reached safely on fielder's choice, while Macaluso was out at home. However, on the same play, Kropuenske scored home caused by KWU's catcher error as the Trojans cut KWU's lead to 7-3.
- Ryan McDaniel produced an RBI single to score Pribyl as DSU trailed 7-4. Mike Vohnoutka added an RBI single to score Jackovich as KWU's lead went down to 7-5.
- Dakota State left a runner on base in the final inning as Kansas Wesleyan earned a doubleheader sweep.
- Pribyl, Macaluso and Vohnoutka finished the game with two singles each for the Trojans. O'Neal and Drummond each added a single and a run scored. McDaniel had a hit and drove in a run. Vohnoutka also produced an RBI.
- Bishop had a home run and drove in three runs for the Coyotes. Keane, Latham, Lopez, and Jeffrey Cochran each recorded a single.
- DSU outhit KWU 9-6, despite the setback. The Trojans left eight runners on base compared to the Coyotes six runners on base.
- Trojan Jeremy Lopes (L, 0-1) took the loss after pitching for three innings. He allowed five runs (one unearned) on six hits. He registered five strikeouts. Trey Randel tossed one inning in relief, giving up two unearned runs. Jared Urbach and Cameron Pitts each tossed one shutout inning.
- Rodney Bond (W, 1-1) earned the victory in 4 2/3 innings of work for the Coyotes. He gave up five hits and recorded five strikeouts. Benjamin Jackson (S, 1) earned the save after tossing 2 1/3 shutout innings in relief.
