TUCSON, Ariz. – Dakota State (S.D.) kicked off the first day of the Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational Monday evening, earning a non-conference baseball doubleheader split with Dordt (Iowa) at Kino Sports Complex. The Trojans won their fifth straight game with a 7-2 game one victory. The Defenders took advantage of DSU's six defensive errors for a 6-2 victory in the second game.
Dakota State is 6-6 overall record. Their fifth straight game is the longest winning streak since the 2014 season. Dordt, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, is 4-10 overall record. Both teams will meet again later in the season (March 31 in Sioux Center and April 14 at Flynn Field).
The Trojans continue their action on Tuesday afternoon, taking on Morningside (Iowa) at 2:30 p.m. (Central Time)/1:30 p.m. (Mountain Time). The DSU baseball developmental team will play Marian (Ind.) tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. (CT)/10 a.m. (MT).
Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 7, Dordt (Iowa) 2 – FINAL
- Dordt produced four singles in the opening inning, plating two runs for a 2-0 lead. Cam Pfafman and Lus Camacho each recorded an RBI single for the game's first two runs.
- Dakota State answered back with four runs scored in the bottom half of the first inning. Mike Vohnoutka led off with a walk. Jace Pribyl hit a single with one out and advanced Vohnoutka to second base. Esai Hernandez followed up with an RBI single to score Vohnoutka as Trojans trailed 2-1 (Pribyl advanced to second base.
- Chris Kropuenske hit a single to set up a bases loaded situation for the Trojans in the bottom first. Ryan McDaniel was hit-by-pitch with two outs and recorded an RBI to score Pribyl for 2-2 tie. Ryan Jackovich produced a 2-RBI single to score Hernandez and Kropuenske as DSU earned a 4-2 lead.
- Dakota State extended their lead to 5-2 in bottom third inning. Hernandez led off with a walk and advanced to second base caused by DC's defensive error. A wild pitch by the Defenders allowed Hernandez to advance to third. Kropuenske hit an RBI single to score Hernandez to extend DSU's lead by three runs.
- The Trojans plated two more runs in the bottom sixth. Jackovich drilled a double to deep right-center. Tyler Kropuenske followed up with a walk. Vohnoutka hit an RBI single to score Alec Gannon, pinch runner for Jackovich, to balloon DSU's lead to 6-2.
- Samuel Drummond added an RBI single to score Tyler Kropuenske as Trojans' lead grew to 7-2. Dakota State secured the game in the final inning as the Defenders left a runner on base.
- Jackovich finished the game by going 2-of-3 at the plate with a double, single and drove in two runs for DSU. Chris Kropuenske and Hernandez each added two singles and an RBI. Vohnoutka and Drummond each had a hit and an RBI.
- Logan Cline recorded a double and single for Dordt. Alexander Chavez added two singles. Pfafman and Camacho each had a single and an RBI.
- DSU outhit DC 9-8 in the game. The Trojans committed four defensive errors compared to the Defenders one error. Dordt left seven runners on base, while Dakota State left five runners on base.
- Defensively, the Trojans recorded three double plays in the game (twice by Chris Kropenske and Tyler Kropuenske).
- Devin DeBoer (W, 3-1) earned his third straight pitching victory on the pitching mound for Dakota State. He tossed his second complete game win, yielding the Defenders to two runs (one unearned) on eight hits. He also struck out five DC's batters.
- Luke Drooger (L, 0-2) recorded the setback for Dordt. He worked for 5 1/3 innings and allowed seven runs on eight hits. He struck out six DSU's batters. Austin Johnson pitched for two outs in the bottom sixth, allowing one hit.
Game 2 – Dordt (Iowa) 6, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL
- The Defenders scored at least a run in the first five innings and held on to the victory over the Trojans in the second game.
- Dordt took the first lead in the bottom first inning. Chavez reached on base caused by DSU's defensive error. Cline hit a single to advance Chavez to third base. The Defenders recorded a double steal as Chavez scored home and advanced Cline to second base, earning a 1-0 lead.
- Dakota State knotted the game in the top second frame, thanks to an RBI double by Chris Kropuenske to score Hernandez who reached on base by DC's defensive miscue.
- John Emerson hit a single to lead off the bottom second for the Defenders. He swiped to second base. Steve Tiersma reached on base by Trojans' defensive error and advanced Emerson to third base. Lucas Nelson hit an RBI single with two outs and scored Emerson for DC's 2-1 lead.
- The Defenders scored once in the bottom third for a 3-1 lead. Dordt extended their lead to 5-1 in the bottom fourth caused by a pair of DSU's defensive miscues. DC scored once on the bottom fifth to make it 6-1.
- The Trojans snapped their scoring drought in the top sixth. Vohnoutka led off with a single. Pribyl reached on base by a walk and advanced Vohnoutka to second base. Chris Kropuenske reached on base by a walk with two outs, setting a bases loaded situation for DSU. Jackson O'Neal was hit-by-pitch and earned an RBI to score Vohnoutka as DSU trailed 6-2.
- The Defenders secured the game in the seventh inning as the Trojans could not reach on base.
- Dakota State was limited to two hits in the game. Vohnoutka and Chris Kropuenske each had a hit. Chris Kropuenske and O'Neal each collected an RBI. Pribyl and Chris Kropuenske each recorded a walk.
- Cline was 2-of-3 at the plate for the Defenders. Camacho, Emerson and Nelson each tallied a single and an RBI. Dordt registered five stolen bases in the game, twice by Cline.
- DC left eight runners on base compared to DSU five runners left on base.
- Carver Hultgren (L, 1-1) recorded the defeat on the pitching mound for DSU. He tossed four innings and gave up five runs (four unearned) on six hits. He struck out eight Defenders' batters. Jared Urbach pitched the fifth inning, allowing a run on one hit. Max Luesebrink tossed a shutout sixth inning, striking out all three DC's batters.
- Isaac Vander Hart (W, 1-3) earned the complete game victory for Dordt. He yielded the Trojans to two runs (one unearned) on two hits. He recorded nine strikeouts.
