TUCSON, Ariz. – The Dakota State University (S.D.) Trojan baseball team returned to action Thursday in a non-conference doubleheader versus William Penn (Iowa) in the Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational Games at Kino Sports Complex. The Statesmen swept the Trojans by the scores of 16-2 and 4-2.
Dakota State fell to 6-9 overall record. William Penn raised their overall record to 19-9.
The Trojans wrap up their tournament play Friday morning at 11 a.m. (Central Time)/9 a.m. (Pacific Time), taking on the North Star Athletic Association conference foe Waldorf (Iowa) in a non-conference contest.
Game 1: William Penn (Iowa) 16, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL
- The Statesmen raced to a 7-0 lead through the first two-and-half innings and never looked back to win the first game of the doubleheader.
- WPU opened with an early lead in the first inning, highlighted by Jake Vernon's 2-RBI single for a 3-0 lead.
- The Trojans were unable to convert their scoring opportunities in the bottom half of the first inning, despite a double by Jace Pribyl.
- William Penn scored twice in the top second to balloon their lead to 5-0. The Statesmen made it 7-0 in the top third after a two-out 2-RBI double by Alex Fisher.
- DSU ended its scoring drought in the bottom third with two runs scored. Mike Vohnoutka hit a single, followed by Samuel Drummond's walk to advance Vohnoutka to second base. A wild pitch by WPU allowed Vohnoutka advance to third base and Drummond to second base.
- Esai Hernandez produced a 2-RBI single to score Vohnoutka and Drummond as the Trojans cut Statesmen's lead to 7-2 in the bottom third frame.
- William Penn exploded for eight runs in the top fourth inning to widen their lead to 15-2. The Statesmen added a run in the top sixth to round out the final score.
- The Trojans left two runners on base when the game ended in the bottom seventh.
- Vohnoutka collected two singles and scored a run for Dakota State. Pribyl and Mason Macaluso each had a double. Hernandez had a single and drove in two runs. Cody Winter, Chris Kropuenske and Alec Gannon each had a single.
- Tanner Bedier and Jameson Hart each tailed two hits and three RBIs for William Penn. Jake Vernon added two hits and two RBIs. Snaider Torrealba had a double and three RBIs. Jarrett Hunt reached on base by a walk three times.
- The Statesmen outhit the Trojans 9-8 in the game. DSU committed four defensive errors while WPU did not recorded a defensive miscue. Both teams left 10 runners on base.
- Cameron Pitts (L, 0-1) recorded the setback on the pitching mound for the Trojans. He tossed 2 2/3 innings and allowed seven runs (one unearned) on three hits. Jacob Yaeger worked for two outs in relief. Max Luesebrink pitched 2 2/3 innings, giving up an unearned run on three hits. William Mote pitched a shutout seventh inning.
- Teddy Natter (W, 2-3) earned the victory for William Penn. He worked for 5 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on seven hits. He recorded nine strikeouts. Jakob Crampton pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief, yielding the Trojans to one hit.
Game 2: William Penn (Iowa) 4, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL
- DSU grabbed its first lead of the second game in the top first, highlighted by a pair of doubles. Drummond drilled a double down the left field line. Kropuenske produced an RBI double with two outs and scored Drummond for Trojans' 1-0 lead.
- The Statesmen produced a pair of singles in the bottom second frame, scoring a run. Hunt led off with a single, while Dominic Bravo added a single. Carson Hauk produced an RBI fielder's choice to score Hunt as WPU knotted the game at 1-1.
- William Penn earned a 2-1 lead in the bottom third caused by DSU's defensive error. The Statesmen plated two runs in the bottom fourth to extend their lead to 4-1.
- Dakota State scored once in the top sixth. Macaluso hit a double to deep right-center with one out. A wild pitch by WPU advance Macaluso to third base. Seth Resnick hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Macaluso as the Trojans trailed 4-2.
- DSU left a runner on base when the game ended, securing the victory for WPU.
- Drummond, Kropuenske and Macaluso each had a double for Dakota State. Jackson O'Neal, Pribyl, Resnick and Jeremiah Zimmerman each added a single. Kropuenske and Resnick each collected an RBI.
- Adrian Garcia and Fisher each recorded two hits for William Penn. Bedier, Hnt, Vernon and Dominic Bravo each had a hit. Garica and Hauk each produced an RBI.
- WPU outhit DSU 8-7 in the game. The Trojans left seven runners on base compared to Statesmen six runners left on base.
- Kahlil Tilbury (L, 0-3) took the loss after tossing four innings for Dakota State. He allowed four runs (three unearned) on eight hits. Trey Randel and Jared Urbach each pitched a shutout inning in relief.
- Michael Carr started the game on the pitching mound for William Penn. He worked for three innings and allowed one run on three hits. Tyler Gregory (W, 5-1) earned the victory after pitching a scoreless fourth inning, despite giving up two hits. Stetson Denning (S, 3) earned the save, pithing the final three innings. He gave up one run on two hits.
