TUCSON, Ariz. – Dordt (Iowa) used a four-run second inning and shut down Dakota State (S.D.) 5-0 on the final day of the Tucson (Ariz.) Softball Invitational at Lincoln Park Friday afternoon. Despite the setback, the Trojans outhit the Defenders 9-8 in the game.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 2-11. Dordt improved their overall record to 12-8.
The Trojans wrap up their week-long tournament as they take on No. 14-ranked Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) for the second time, which is slated to start immediately after the game.
Dordt (Iowa) 5, Dakota State (S.D.) 0 – FINAL
- Dordt exploded for four runs in the bottom second, highlighted by back-to-back extra-base hits. Hannah Sikkema led off with a walk and swiped to second base. Addison Hansen reached safely on base by DSU's defensive error and advanced Sikkema to third base. Janae Wynja drilled an RBI double to score Sikkema, giving DC a 1-0 lead (Hansen advanced to third).
- Ella Koster followed up with a 2-RBI triple to score Hansen and Wynja to extend Dordt's lead to 3-0 in the bottom second frame. Jessica Flaherty added an RBI single to score Koster as the Defenders' lead grew to 4-0.
- Dakota State left runners on second and third bases in the top fourth, despite back-to-back singles by Rosie Philop and Xitlali Lopez. The Trojans also left a runner on third base in the top fifth inning, trailing 4-0 to the Defenders.
- With bases loaded situation in the bottom sixth, Flaherty recorded an RBI hit-by-pitch to extend Dordt's lead to 5-0.
- Dakota State was unable to produce a hit in the final inning, securing the victory for Dordt.
- Four Trojan players recorded two hits in the game. Lopez had a double and single. Elizabeth Whitesides, Sarah Torres and Philop each produced two singles. Whitesides swiped one base. Nicole Stewart reached on base by a walk. Julia Andersen recorded two walks.
- Flaherty led the Defenders with a double, single and drove in two runs. Koster added a triple, single and two RBIs. Wynja had a double and an RBI. Sara Dekkers and Hansen each had a hit.
- DSU left nine runners on base compared to DC seven runners left on base.
- Faith Danner (L, 1-5) took the defeat in the pitching circle for Dakota State. She tossed five innings and gave up four runs (one unearned) on seven hits. Annalisa Ingui worked the sixth inning in relief, allowing one run.
- Abby Kraemer (W, 6-4) earned the victory after tossing four scoreless innings, giving up six hits. Natalie Fopma pitched three scoreless innings, yielding two hits.
