MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) jumped to a 2-0 match lead over Great Plains Athletic Conference's foe Morningside (Iowa) in a non-conference volleyball match Friday evening at DSU Fieldhouse. The Mustangs rallied back to win the next three sets, earning a 3-2 thriller over the Trojans.
Set scores were 23-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-17 and 15-9.
Dakota State fell to 4-2 overall record, recording its first home defeat of the season. Morningside improved to 2-3 overall record. The Trojans swept the Mustangs in two straight sets in the junior varsity match (25-18, 25-16).
Morningside (Iowa) 3, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL (23-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-17, 15-9)
- Morningside raced to a 5-0 lead to kick off the match, thanks to three kills by Krista Zenk. The Trojans would answer back with a 5-1 scoring run to cut MC's lead to 6-5.
- The Mustangs stretched its lead to 13-7 before the Trojans rallied back with a 6-2 run to cut the Mustangs lead to 15-13.
- Trailing 23-21, Dakota State closed the first set with a 4-0 run. The Trojans recorded three straight kills by three different attackers—Abigail Van Ruler, Riley Grandpre and Abigail Grabowska—and closed the first set with a block by Van Ruler for a 25-23 victory.
- MC outhit DSU 15-13 in the first set, but the Mustangs committed nine attack errors in 52 swings (.115 hitting percentage). The Trojans hit .159 (6 attack errors in 44 attempts).
- Tied at 2-2 in the second set, Dakota State reeled off by scoring six straight points to grab an 8-2 lead. During the scoring run, Maddie Polzin smashed a pair of kills followed by four straight attack errors by the Mustangs (including a pair of blocks by the Trojans—Hannah Viet, Polzin and Van Ruler).
Dakota State never trailed for the rest of the second set. Polzin smashed a kill to secure a 2-0 match lead for the Trojans after a 25-20 victory.- Both teams had 13 kills in the second set. The Trojans hit .250 (4 attack errors in 36 attempts) compared to the Mustangs .105 hitting efficiency (9 errors in 38 swings).
- Morningside started the third set with a 4-0 lead, but Dakota State answered back by knotting at 14-14 after a block by Viet and Madalyn Groft.
- The Mustangs then went on a 7-2 scoring tear to widen their lead to 21-16 and never looked back. MC extended the match to the fourth set after a 25-20 set three win.
- MC outhit DSU 17-12 in the third set. The Mustangs hit .261 (5 errors in 46 attempts) while the Trojans were held to .196 hitting percentage (3 errors in 46 swings).
- Knotted 2-2 in the fourth set, Morningside went on a 12-4 scoring run to earn a 14-6 lead. DSU could get no closer than seven points and the Mustangs forced the fifth and deciding set after a 25-17 victory.
- MC hit .205 in the fourth set (12 kills with 4 errors in 39 attempts) and held DSU to .044 hitting percentage (10 kills with 8 errors in 45 attempts).
- Dakota State kicked off the fifth set with a kill by Van Ruler, a set error by the Mustangs and a service ace by Polzin for a 3-0 lead. The Mustangs answered with a 6-1 scoring run to overtake the lead at 6-4.
- DSU could get no closer than one point on two different occasions, 6-5 and 7-6. Morningside closed the match with an 8-3 outburst for a 15-9 victory.
- The Mustangs hit an impressive .310 in the fifth set (11 kills with 2 errors in 29 swings) compared to the Trojans .118 hitting efficiency (5 kills with 1 error in 34 attempts).
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Polzin posted a double-double of 18 kills and 13 digs for Dakota State. She also had four block assists and three service aces. Madalyn Groft also produced a double-double of 42 set assists and 16 digs. She added seven kills and three block assists.- Viet recorded nine kills and six block assists for the Trojans. Grabowska and Van Ruler each added eight kills.
- Peyton Groft led DSU's defense with 20 digs. Tacey Fischbach added 16 digs. Tayler Corey tallied 14 digs. Grandpre collected six blocks (1 solo, 5 assist).
- Four Mustangs recorded double-digit in kills. Zenk led the Mustangs with a double-double of 19 kills and 34 digs. Caitlin Makovicka added a double-double of 15 kills and 25 digs. She hit .316 in the match.
- Kaelyn Giefer tallied 15 kills for the Morningside. Meredith Hoffmah had 12 kills.
- Sabrina Creason had a match-high 58 set assists and produced a double-double with 12 digs for MC. Kayla Harris collected 35 digs.
TEAM COMPARISONS
- Morningside smashed 68 kills in the match compared to Dakota state 53 kills. The Mustangs hit .191 (29 attack errors in 204 swings), while the Trojans recorded a hitting efficiency of .151 (22 attack errors in 205 attempts).
- The Mustangs were 95.4 percent from the serving line, recording four aces and five errors in 108 serves. The Trojans recorded an 89.6 service percentage with five aces and ten service errors in 96 attempts.
- MC tallied 117 digs compared to DSU 100 digs.
- The Trojans recorded 13 team blocks (2 solo, 22 block assists), while the Mustangs had three blocks (6 block assists).
UP NEXT
Dakota State heads on the road Saturday for another match against GPAC foe. The Trojans visit College of Saint Mary (Neb.) with a junior varsity match at 4:30 p.m., followed by the varsity match at 6 p.m. The matches will be held at Lied Fitness Center in Omaha, Neb.
