SALINA, Kan. – Friends (Kan.) handed Dakota State (S.D.) its first volleyball defeat of the season Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Kansas Wesleyan Invitational at Mabee Arena. The Falcons held on to a closely tight match by the set scores of 25-22, 29-27, 18-25 and 30-28.
Dakota State fell to 3-1 overall record. Friends, a member of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, is 2-1 overall record.

- Dakota State started the match with an 8-3 lead, thanks to five attack errors committed by Friends. The Falcons answered back by scoring six straight points to earn a 9-8 lead.
- Both teams went see-saw battle in the first set, featuring 10 ties before FU pulled out. Leading 21-20, the Falcons used a 4-2 run to take the first set at 25-22 for a 1-0 match lead.
- DSU and FU struggled offensively, hitting below .100 in the first set. Friends hit .068 (12 kills with 9 errors in 44 swings) compared to Dakota State .043 hitting percentage (10 kills with 8 errors in 46 swings).
- The second set also saw a see-saw battle between the Trojans and the Falcons, registering 19 ties and the lead no bigger than two points by both teams.
- DSU held a 24-22 lead, but FU saved two set points as part of their 3-0 run for a 25-24 lead. Trailing 26-25, Hannah Viet smashed a pair of kills to put DSU up 27-26.
- Friends saved DSU's third chance for a set point after closing the second set by scoring three straight points for a 29-27 victory. FU extended their match lead to 2-0.
- Dakota State outhit Friends 18-15 in the second set. The Falcons hit .225 (6 errors in 40 attempts) compared to the Trojans .180 hitting percentage (9 errors in 50 swings).
- After FU kicked the third set with a 4-1 lead, Tayler Corey tallied three service aces to spark a DSU's 5-0 scoring run for a 6-4 lead.
- Leading 16-14, Dakota State closed the third set with a 9-4 outburst for a 25-18 victory. Amy Uher recorded a service ace as the Trojans extended the match to the fourth set, trailing 2-1.
- DSU hit .294 in the third set (10 kills with 5 errors in 17 attempts). FU was held to minus .125 hitting efficiency (7 kills with 9 errors in 16 swings).
- Dakota State exploded to a 7-2 lead in the fourth set (including back-to-back block assists by Abigail Van Ruler and Riley Grandpre). The Trojans extended their lead to 12-6 after a service ace by Maddie Polzin.
- DSU expanded their lead to 19-11 but could not overcome Friends' furious comeback to secure the match.
- Friends went on a 10-4 scoring tear to cut DSU's lead to 23-21. Nicole Sarringar recorded a kill to put Trojans up 24-21, setting up a set point opportunity to force the deciding set.
- The Falcons saved a pair of set points after going on a 4-0 outburst to overtake a 25-24 lead from the Trojans. A kill by Abigail Grabowska saved a match point for Friends to knot the fourth at 25-25.
- Each team took turn trading points in the next six rallies, tying at 28-28. Friends secured the match victory after scoring the final two points for a 30-28 victory.
- The Falcons hit .400 in the fourth set (14 kills with 6 errors in 20 attempts) compared to the Trojans .333 hitting percentage (18 kills with 9 errors in 27 swings).
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Polzin paced the Trojans' offense attack with a match-high 20 kills. She hit .273 in the match. Grandpre added 10 kills and three block assists. Viet and Grabowska each had seven kills.
- Madalyn Groft produced 39 set assists for Dakota State. She also had seven digs and six kills.
- Corey recorded five service aces and eight digs in the match for the Trojans. Peyton Groft had seven digs. Abigail Van Ruler registered four block assists.
- MaKenzie Strecker led the Falcons with 13 kills. Sarah Lazar-St. John and Tiffany Hurd each added nine kills. Abigail Knittel collected 41 set assists and eight digs.
- Alyssa Arnold led FU with 19 digs. Raquel Gonzales had three service aces.
TEAM COMPARISONS
- Dakota State outhit Friends 56-48 in the match. The Trojans hit .179 (31 errors in 140 swings) while the Falcons recorded .150 hitting percentage (30 errors in 120 attempts).
- DSU tallied 12 service aces and committed nine service errors. FU had seven service aces and four service errors.
- Friends recorded 47 digs compared to Dakota State 39 digs. DSU had six team blocks, while FU registered four team blocks.
UP NEXT
Dakota State was originally scheduled to play in the Peru State (Neb.) tournament next weekend. The tournament has been canceled due to COVID-19 on Peru State's volleyball team.
The Trojans await until Wednesday, Sept. 16 as they play their first home match of the season, hosting Bellevue (Neb.) in the North Star Athletic Association conference season opener. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse.
