MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) poured in a season-high 90 points Saturday evening, cruising past Waldorf (Iowa) 90-51 in the North Star Athletic Association men's basketball contest at DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans recorded season-highs 13 3-pointers, 12 steals, 20 assists and 33 field goals made in the game.
Dakota State snapped their three-game losing streak, improving to 7-11 overall record and 5-4 NSAA conference record. Waldorf fell to 5-13 overall record and 3-6 record in league play. Both teams played for the second time in a week (WU defeated DSU 69-64 in Forest City, Iowa on Jan. 23).
DSU moved in a 3-way tie for fourth place in the rugged North Star Athletic Association men's basketball conference standings with Viterbo (Wis.) and Dickinson State (N.D.). They are one-game behind the tri-NSAA leaders Bellevue (Neb.), Mayville State (N.D.), and Valley City State (N.D.) with each team holding a 6-3 league record.
The Trojans also ended their four-game losing skid in the series meeting with the Warriors.
Dakota State continues their four-game home stand next weekend at DSU Fieldhouse. DSU hosts Presentation (S.D.) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Mayville State (N.D.) next Saturday at 8 p.m.
Dakota State (S.D.) 90, Waldorf (Iowa) 51 – FINAL
- Ronnie Latting made a lay-up to give Trojans its first lead of the game at 2-0 with nineteen minutes and twenty-three seconds on the clock.
- Quincy Moore, Jr. answered with a 3-point play, earning a 3-2 lead for Waldorf with 18:36 left.
- The Warriors' lead was just short-lived DSU's Jordan Lynn drained a 3-pointer to spark a 16-3 monstrous scoring run.
- The Trojans were 6-of-8 from the field during the outbreak, capped by 3-pointer by Lynn for 18-6 lead with 14:41 to go in the first.
- Dakota State continued to hold their lead between 10- and 19-points for the rest of the first half. Lynn drained a 3-pointer with less than two minutes to go as DSU's lead ballooned to 42-21.
The Warriors closed the first half with five straight points from Chett Helming, cutting the Trojans' lead to 42-26 by halftime.- Dakota State shot a sizzling 51.6 percent from the field (16-of-31 field goals) compared to Waldorf 31.8 percent (7-of-22 field goals).
- The Trojans held the Warriors to just four points in the first eight-plus minutes of the second half, fueling a 24-4 outburst. Lamarr Wood made a basket inside the paint to stretch DSU's lead to 66-30 with 12:10 remaining.
- A 3-pointer by Brady Van Holland (assisted by Ryan Schuster) gave Dakota State its largest lead of the game at 86-44 with 4:06 left.
- Dakota State outscored Waldorf 48-25 in the final twenty minutes, thanks to their 51.5 percent field goal shooting (17-of-33 field goals). The Warriors were held to 34.4 percent (11-of-32 field goals).
- Four Trojan players scored in double-digits, paced by Lynn with a season-high 27 points. He shot 9-of-11 from the field, including 6-of-8 from the 3-point arc. He made all three free-throw attempts. He dished out three assists and stole the ball four times.
- Gairges Daow and Wood each added 13 points for DSU. Gavin Schipper tallied 12 points. Van Holland scored nine points. Latting and Daow each pulled down eight rebounds. Wood added seven rebounds. Cole Bruhn grabbed six rebounds. Gare Ewefada stole the ball a career-high four times.
- Schuster, Bruhn, and Jade Burma each registered a blocked shot for Dakota State.
- Zaveon Smith led the Warriors with 11 points. Shandon Hicks added nine points. Tristan Furgeson had eight points and four rebounds. Kesean Warren grabbed seven rebounds. Shaheed Muhammad dished out three assists.
Dakota State shot 33-of-64 overall from the field (51.6 percent) compared to Waldorf 18-of-54 field goals (33.3 percent). The Trojans were 13-of-30 from the 3-point arc (43.3 percent), while the Warriors were 5-of-19 3-pointers (71.4 percent).- DSU outrebounded WU 42-27 in the game. The Trojans outscored the Warriors 18-10 in fast-break points, 26-18 in points off turnovers, 36-26 inside the paint, 18-4 in second chance points and 30-20 in bench points.
