MADISON, S.D. – Dordt (Iowa) missed only eight shots in the first twenty minutes of the non-conference men's basketball contest Monday evening at DSU Fieldhouse, racing to a 57-41 lead over Dakota State (S.D.). The Trojans tried to attempt a comeback, cutting into single digits in the second half but fell by the score of 92-76.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 2-7. Dordt, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, won their fourth straight game to raise their overall record to 12-4.
DSU stays home this weekend as they resume to North Star Athletic Association conference play. The Trojans look to snap their losing skid as they host the red-hot Valley City State (N.D.), who had won the last eight games, on Friday evening. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse.
Dakota State welcomes Dickinson State (N.D.) on Saturday evening at 6 p.m.
Dordt (Iowa) 92, Dakota State (S.D.) 76 – FINAL
- The Defenders made the first three baskets of the game, racing to an 8-0 lead. Cade Bleeker and Garrett Franken hit back-to-back 3-pointer, followed by Jesse Jansma's basket for DC's eight-point lead. The Trojans were forced to call a quick timeout with 18 minutes, 19 seconds on the clock.
- DSU snapped their scoring drought with Jordan Lynn's lay-up with 17:28 on the clock (Trojans trailed 8-2).
- A 3-pointer by Bryce Coppock give the Defenders its first double-digit lead of the game at 20-10 with 11:04 left before halftime.
- Dordt shot a blazing 74.2 percent from the field (23-of-31 field goals), earning a 57-41 halftime lead. DC also hit 8-of-14 3-pointers. Dakota State was 51.5 percent from the field (17-of-33 field goals) and 4-of-7 from the 3-point arc in the first half.
- Jansma nailed down a pair of free-throws to give the Defenders its biggest lead of the game at 63-43 with 18:18 remaining.
- Trailing 75-60, the Trojans went on a 9-2 scoring tear to cut the Defenders' lead to 77-69 with 6:06 to go after a 3-pointer by Gare Ewefada.
- DSU also could get no closer than eight points at 79-71 after a field goal by Ronnie Latting (assisted by Ewefada).
- Both teams scored 35 points in the final twenty minutes of the game. The Trojans shot 51.7 percent from the field (15-of-29 field goals) and held the Defenders to 39.3 percent (11-of-28 field goals).
- Four DSU players scored in double digits, led by Ewefada with a season-high 19 points off the bench. He was 8-of-11 from the field. He also had two assists. Lynn tallied 18 points, pulled down five rebounds, dished out three assists and stole the ball twice.
- Latting scored 13 points and collected seven rebounds for the Trojans. He had three assists. Josh McGreal had 11 points and two assists. Gavin Schippered had eight points. Brady Van Holland had five points, five rebounds and two steals.
- Latting, McGreal and Van Holland each registered a blocked shot for Dakota State.
- Jansma led the Defenders with a game-high 20 points on his 6-of-10 field goals and 6-of-6 free throws. He contributed five assists. Garrett Franken added 18 points (7-of-13 field goals) and produce a game-high eight assists. He also had three steals. He had five rebounds. Jacob Vis had 16 points (7-of-10 field goals).
- Bleeker and Coppock each added 10 points for Dordt. Bleeker had five rebounds. Bleeker, Vis, Dejay Fykstra, Caleb Harmsen and Camden Bialas each had a block.
- Dordt shot 57.6 percent overall from the field (34-of-59 field goals) compared to Dakota State 51.6 percent (32-of-62 field goals). The Defenders were 12-of-21 from the 3-point line (57.1 percent), while the Trojans were 5-of-13 3-pointers (38.5 percent).
- DC was near perfect at the free-throw line, making 12-of-13 free-throws (92.3 percent). DSU was 7-of-11 free-throws (63.6 percent).
- The Trojans had a slim rebounding edge over the Defenders 30-29. Dakota State outscored Dordt 8-6 in second chance points.
- DC outscored DSU 10-4 in fast-break points and 25-21 in bench points. The Trojans outscored the Defenders 46-40 inside the paint and 10-9 in points off turnovers.
