Vikings defeat Trojans in key NSAA volleyball five-set thriller

VALLEY CITY, N.D. – Valley City State (N.D.) earned its North Star Athletic Association volleyball season series sweep over Dakota State (S.D.) Saturday in another five-set thriller at Graichen Gymnasium, despite smashing a season-high 69 kills in the match.  The Vikings rallied back from 2-1 match deficit and won the final two sets to secure a 3-2 match victory (VCSU defeated DSU in first NSAA meeting on Oct. 3 in a five-set thriller at DSU Fieldhouse).

Set scores were 25-21, 25-18, 25-19, 23-25, and 15-12.

Dakota State's four-match winning streak came to an end, falling to 15-6 overall record and 6-4 record in North Star conference.  Valley City State improved to 12-14 overall record and 7-3 record in the league.

DSU stays on the road on Tuesday evening, playing a non-conference contest at Mount Marty (S.D.).  The junior varsity match is set for 6 p.m., followed by the varsity match at 7:30 p.m.  Both matches will be held at Cimpl Arena in Yankton, S.D.

Dakota State returns home Wednesday for the North Star conference versus Presentation (S.D.) with a junior varsity match at 4 p.m. and varsity contest at 6 p.m.

Valley City State (N.D.) 3, (RV) Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL (25-21, 18-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-12)

  • Valley City State jumped to an 8-3 lead in the first set.  The Trojans answered with a 10-2 outburst to regain a 13-10 after a service ace by Madalyn Groft.
  • Kallene Klever hit a service ace as the Vikings knotted the first set at 14-14 and stretched its lead to 17-15 after a kill by Bailey Nelson.
  • Brooke Blessum smashed a kill to secure a 1-0 match lead for the Vikings after recording a 25-21 victory.  VCSU outhit DSU 14-13 in the first set.  The Trojans were held to .093 hitting percentage after committing eight attack errors in 54 swings.  Valley City State hit .157 (6 errors in 51 swings).
  • After going back-and-forth battle to start the second set, Dakota State went on a 12-5 scoring run to balloon their lead to 19-11 after holing a slim 7-6 lead. 
  • Sydney Schell closed the second set with a kill, evening the match at 1-1 after 25-18 DSU victory.  The Trojans hit an impressive .379 (15 kills with 4 errors in 29 attempts) and held the Vikings to .194 hitting percentage (13 kills with 6 errors in 36 swings).
  • Leading 11-10 in the third set, the Trojans used a 6-2 run to widen their lead to 17-12 capped by Maddie Polzin's kill.
  • The Trojans outhit the Vikings 19-11 in the third set to grab a 2-1 match lead after 25-19, closing with a kill by Polzin. 
  • Valley City State opened the fourth set with a 5-1 lead, with a kill by three different hitters (Nelson, Caitlyn Fischbach, and Sadie Hansen.
  • Trailing 12-7, the Trojans stormed back with an 8-2 run to overtake a 15-14 lead after M. Groft's kill.
  • The Vikings answered with a 7-2 scoring tear to regain their lead to 21-17 capped by Makayla Wetzel's service ace.
  • Nelson smashed a kill to set up a set point at 24-22 for VCSU.  Polzin smashed a kill to save a set point opportunity as they trailed 24-23.
  • An error committed by the Trojans helped the Vikings to force the fifth and deciding set after a 25-23 set four victory.  Dakota State outhit Valley City State 17-16 in the fourth set.
  • VCSU kicked off the fifth set with back-to-back kills by Ella Roaldson and extended their lead to 5-1 after a block by Wetzel, forcing the Trojans to burn their first timeout.
  • Dakota State mounted a comeback by outscoring Valley City State 4-1, trimming their deficit to 6-5 after a Polzin's service ace.
  • With VCSU leading 8-7, a kill by Blessum followed by a service ace by Hansen and a kill by Katie Juarez ballooned their lead to 11-7.
  • Dakota State cut Valley City State's lead to 11-9 after blocks by Vanessa Schroeder and Riley Grandpre.
  • The Vikings scored the next three points to set up a match point at 14-9 after a kill each by Juarez, Roaldson, and Nelseon.
  • The Trojans saved three match point opportunities, cutting the Vikings lead to 14-12. 
  • Nelson closed the match with a kill to secure a 3-2 victory after winning the fifth set at 15-12.
  • Valley City State outhit Dakota State 12-5 in the deciding set.
  • Polzin smashed a season-high 24 kills and produced a double-double with 11 digs for the Trojans.  Schell added a double-double of 14 kills and collected 22 digs.  She had four blocks.  Viet tallied 11 kills and registered five blocks.  Schroeder contributed four blocks.
  • M. Groft produced a season-high 42 set assists for DSU.  She also had nine kills, nine digs, and three blocks.  Peyton Groft tallied 28 digs.  Grandpre recorded six kills and two blocks.  M. Groft and Polzin each had two service aces.
  • Nelson led Valley City State's offense with 22 kills.  She also had three blocks.  Juarez posted a double-double of 11 kills and 26 digs.  Hansen also produced a double-double of 48 set assists and 14 digs.
  • Klever tallied 24 digs for VCSU.  She added two service aces.
  • Dakota State had three more kills (69-66) and two more blocks (10-8) than Valley City State.
  • The Trojans recorded seven service aces and three errors.  The Vikings had six aces and seven service errors.
