MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) forced Presentation (S.D.) to 27 attack errors Wednesday evening, rolling to a 3-0 North Star Athletic Association volleyball sweep at DSU Fieldhouse. Set scores were 25-8, 25-17, and 25-16. The Trojans completed their season series sweep of the Saints.
Dakota State, who received more votes recognition in the latest NAIA volleyball coaches' Top 25 national poll this morning, raised their overall record to 17-6 and 7-4 record in the league. Presentation fell to 13-12 overall record and 3-8 NSAA conference record.
The Trojans defeated the Saints 2-1 in the junior varsity match.
DSU heads on the road Friday evening for their final non-conference match of the season. Dakota State visits Briar Cliff (Iowa) with a junior varsity match at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity match at 6:30 p.m. The matches will be held at Newman Flanagan Center on the campus of Briar Cliff in Sioux City, Iowa.
Dakota State play its home finale on Saturday afternoon, hosting Mayville State (N.D.) in the North Star Athletic Association action. The junior varsity match is set for 1 p.m., followed by the varsity match at 3 p.m. Parents and Seniors Day will be held prior to the varsity match at DSU Fieldhouse.
(RV) Dakota State (S.D.) 3, Presentation (S.D.) 0 – FINAL (25-8, 25-17, 25-16)
- Dakota State stormed to a 6-1 lead, capped by a kill by Maddie Polzin and forced Presentation to burn their first timeout of the first set.
- At 9-4, the Trojans used another strong scoring run to balloon their lead. DSU went on an 8-1 scoring tear to widen their lead to 17-5 after an attack error by the Saints.
- Dakota State closed the opening set with an 8-1 run as Vanessa Schroder smashed a kill for a 25-8 victory.
- DSU outhit PC 10-4 in the opening set. Presentation committed 11 attack errors in 38 swings and hit minus .184. DSU registered a hitting percentage of .182 (4 errors in 23 attempts).
The Trojans and Saints battled through three ties in the early going of the second set. Holding a slim 7-6 lead, DSU went on 7-3 run to increase their lead to 14-9 after a kill by Madalyn Groft.- Dakota State outhit Presentation 16-9 in the second set as Schroeder closed the set with another kill for a 25-17 victory.
- DSU hit an impressive .355 in the second set (5 errors in 31 swings) and held the Saints to .129 hitting efficiency (5 errors in 31 swings).
- Polzin and Riley Grandpre smashed a kill followed by an attack error by PC to open a 3-0 lead in the third set for the Trojans.
- The Saints went on an 8-3 run to gain an 8-5 lead after an error committed by the Trojans.
- Trailing 10-8, DSU sparked a 4-0 run highlighted by a block assist each by Sydney Schell and Hannah Viet to grab a 12-10 lead.
- Presentation could get no closer than 12-11 as Dakota State used another strong scoring run to widen their lead. The Trojans went on a 6-1 run to extend their lead to 18-12 after Grandpre's kill.
- Viet smashed a kill to give DSU a match point at 24-15. Dakota State would secure the match victory after a service error committed by Presentation, earning a 25-16 victory.
- Dakota State used a balanced offense attack, led by Grandpre with nine kills and hit an astounding .750 in the match. Polzin, Schell, and Viet each added seven kills. Polzin and Viet each recorded a hitting percentage of .333. Schroeder had four kills and two blocks.
M. Groft contributed 17 set assists, four kills, and two blocks for the Trojans. Nicole Sarringar added 16 set assists and collected seven digs. - Peyton Groft tallied nine digs and a service ace for DSU. VonnaGail Schlechter had nine digs. M. Groft and Schell each added an ace. Jenna Frank earned two service aces.
- Becca Payne paced Presentation with nine kills. Saige Jones added five kills. Allie White recorded three kills.
- Olivia Corey produced 16 set assists and registered nine digs for PC. Rebecca Allen added seven assists and four digs. Laura Babcock tallied 12 digs. Cassidy Keller had nine digs.
- Dakota State smashed 38 kills in the match compared to Presentation 25 kills. The Trojans hit .267 with just 11 attack errors in 101 swings. The Saints committed 24 attack errors in 109 attempts, registering a hitting percentage of .009.
- DSU was 95.9 percent from the serving line, producing five service aces and committed three errors in 74 serves. PC was 88.1 percent from the serving line with five errors in 42 attempts.
- Dakota State recorded a perfect reception rate of 100 percent with 37 receptions.
- The Trojans had four blocks compared to the Saints one block.
