Trojans upset #13 Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) in non-conference volleyball tilt; hand DWU first home setback

MITCHELL, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) bounced back in the winning column Tuesday evening, earning an upset victory over nationally-ranked Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) in a non-conference volleyball tilt at Christian Athletic Center.  The Trojans defeated the long-time rival Tigers by the set scores of 19-25, 25-22, 25-22, and 25-19.

Dakota State improved to 11-4 overall record and earned their first victory over NAIA's Top 25 nationally ranked team since the 2019 season (defeated nationally ranked Bellevue, Neb. three times during the season).  Dakota Wesleyan, who is currently ranked No. 13 in the latest NAIA Volleyball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, fell to 16-3 overall record.

It was the first road victory in Mitchell for Dakota State since Aug. 29, 2014.  The Trojans also handed the Tigers its first home setback this season (4-1 record).  DSU improved to 5-1 record on the road this season.

Dakota State returns home Thursday evening to kick off their four-match home stand at DSU Fieldhouse.  The Trojans host another nationally ranked opponent, No. 2 Viterbo (Wis.) in the North Star Athletic Association match.  First serve is set for 6 p.m.  The Trojans volleyball team will hold their faculty/staff appreciation night.  Blackout night will also be the theme for DSU volleyball home match on Thursday evening.

Dakota State (S.D.) 3, (13) Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) 1 – FINAL (19-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-19)

  • Trailing 3-1 in the opening set, Dakota State reeled off by scoring six straight points to earn a 7-3 lead, capped by a block assist each by Hannah Viet and Taryn Tacheny.
  • Knotted at 11-11, DWU used a 7-0 scoring run to take an 18-11 lead after a kill by Ady Dwight.
  • DSU could get no closer than four points at 23-19 in the first set.  The Tigers scored the final two points of to earn a 1-0 match lead after a 25-19 victory.
  • Dakota Wesleyan outhit Dakota State 14-10 in the first set.
  • The Trojans and Tigers went through a see-saw battle in the second set with 11 ties and lead no greater than two points by DWU on several occasions. 
  • Madalyn Groft and Viet highlighted with a pair of kills during DSU's 5-0 scoring run to open a 22-18 lead.
  • Maddie Polzin smashed a kill to secure a 25-22 set two victory as the Trojans evened the match at 1-1.
  • Both teams hit above .300 in the second set.  DSU hit an impressive .385 with 18 errors and 3 errors in 39 swings.  DWU recorded a .308 hitting efficiency with 17 kills with 5 errors in 39 attempts.
  • The third set was a similar story with the second set going through a see-saw battle, recording a total of 11 ties in 42 rallies.
  • Tied at 21-21, Dakota State used a 3-0 scoring run to set up a set point opportunity at 24-21 after an attack error committed by the Tigers.
  • Polzin closed the third set with a kill to give DSU a 25-22 victory and earned a 2-1 match lead.
  • The Trojans tallied 14 kills in the third set and hit .150 (8 errors in 40 swings).  The Tigers had 13 kills with 8 errors in 47 swings for a hitting percentage of .106.
  • Dakota State raced to a 4-0 lead to start the fourth set, thanks to a pair of kills by Sydney Schell and a kill by Polzin.
  • The Tigers rallied back with a 6-2 run to knot the fourth at 6-6.
  • DSU then answered by using a monstrous 7-0 scoring run – highlighted by a pair of kills by Polzin and M. Polzin – to balloon their lead to 13-6.
  • A kill by Riley Grandpre, followed by M. Groft extended DSU's lead to 15-8, forcing DWU to burn a timeout.
  • M. Groft posted a triple-double of 24 set assists, 14 kills, and 13 digs for Dakota State.  She hit .346 in the match.  Polzin added a double-double of 14 kills and collected 11 digs.  Schell also produced a double-double of 13 kills and 18 digs.
  • Viet smashed 10 kills and registered five blocks for the Trojans.  Nicole Sarringar contributed 23 set assists and seven digs.
  • Peyton Groft led Dakota State's defense with a match-high 24 digs.  Grandpre and Schell each had five blocks. 
  • Dwight led the Tigers' offense attack with 16 kills and hit .286.  She also recorded eight blocks.  Mariah Gloe posted a double-double of 15 kills and 13 digs. 
  • Madeline Else tallied a double-double of 52 set assists and 15 digs for DWU.  Mackenzie Miller had 13 kills.
  • Hanna Reiff collected 22 digs for Dakota Wesleyan.  Tya Weldeman added 10 digs. 
  • Dakota State outhit Dakota Wesleyan 59-57 in the match.  The Trojans hit .208 (22 errors in 178 swings) compared to the Tigers .159 (27 attack errors in 189 attempts).
  • DWU recorded four service aces and four service errors.  DSU had two aces and no service errors.
  • Both teams recorded 10 blocks in the match.
  • Dakota State's junior varsity team improved to 3-1 after a 2-0 sweep over Dakota Wesleyan. Set scores were 25-21 and 26-24.
