(18) Vikings pull away past (RV) Trojans in closely tight NAIA Women's Volleyball Opening Round match

DES MOINES, Iowa –  No. 18 ranked Grand View (Iowa) pulled away for a 3-1 closely tight NAIA Women's Volleyball National Tournament Opening Round Saturday afternoon at Charles S. Johnson Wellness Center.  Despite the setback, the Trojans racked up a season-high 18 blocks in the match.

The Trojans - who made their second ever trip to the NAIA Women's Volleyball National Tournament Opening Round in the last three seasons, ended their season with an impressive overall record of 21-9, the best winning percentage in a single season in head coach Amy Veenhof's era at Dakota State.  Grand View advanced to the NAIA Women's Volleyball National Tournament's final site at Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa on Nov. 30-Dec. 4 with an overall record of 25-13.  Pool play schedule will be released Sunday at 5 p.m.

(18) Grand View (Iowa) 3, (RV) Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL (28-26, 25-22, 20-25, 25-10)

  • The first set featured series of runs by both teams.  Dakota State opened with back-to-back kills by Sydney Schell for 2-0 lead.  Grand View answered with a 7-1 scoring run to grab a 7-3 led, capped by a block assist by Alexa Aldrich-Ingram and Sydney Beasley.
  • DSU then went on an 11-4 outburst to regain their lead to 14-11 after a block assist each by Hannah Viet and Taryn Tacheny.
  • The Vikings went on a 4-1 run to tie the first set at 15-15.  DSU went on to score four straight points to grab a 19-15 lead, highlighted by back-to-back service aces by Jenna Frank.
  • Taylor Carey smashed a pair of kills coupled with a pair of service aces by Chevy Wagner-Chun to spark a 7-0 outburst to grab a 22-19 lead.
  • Trailing 24-21, the Trojans saved three set opportunities by the Vikings as Riley Grandpre recorded a block to knot the first set at 24-24.
  • Down 25-24, DSU scored the next two points to set up a set point opportunity for a 1-0 match lead at 26-25. 
  • Jenna Wagemester smashed a kill followed by a service ace by Karleigh Halpin and a kill by Wagemester capped GVU's 3-0 run to secure a thrilling 28-26 set one victory.  Grand View earned a 1-0 match lead.
  • Dakota State hit .140 in the opening set (12 kills with 5 errors in 50 swings) compared to Grand View .136 hitting percentage (18 kills with 10 errors in 59 attempts).
  • DSU and GVU battled through nine ties through the first 18 rallies.  Tied at 9-9, the Vikings stormed with a 6-0 run to balloon their lead to 15-9.
  • Despite being behind 19-14, Dakota State roared back with a 7-1 run, capped by Grandpre's block for a 21-20 lead.
  • Leading 23-22, the Vikings closed the second set by scoring the final two points to secure a 25-22 victory and extended their match lead to 2-0.
  • GVU hit .212 in the second set (18 kills with 7 errors in 52 swings).  DSU was held to .128 hitting percentage (12 kills with 6 errors in 47 attempts).
  • Trailing 4-3 in the third set, the Trojans scored five straight points to earn an 8-4 lead after an error committed by the Vikings.
  • Grand View trimmed their deficit to 10-9 after an attack error committed by the Trojans.
  • Dakota State went on a 10-4 run to widen their lead to 20-13.  Schell smashed three kills during the Trojans' scoring run.
  • Viet and Tacheny closed the third set with a block each to extend the match into the fourth set after winning by the score of 25-20.
  • Both teams had 12 kills in the third set.  The Trojans hit .125 (6 errors in 48 swings).  The Vikings committed 11 attack errors in 50 swings (.020 hitting percentage).
  • Grand View sparked a fast start in the fourth set, opening a 7-1 led.  The Vikings extended their lead to 11-2, forcing the Trojans to call its second and final timeout. 
  • GVU ballooned their lead to 15-3 after a kill by Carey.  Madalyn Groft smashed a kill to snap the scoring drought (DSU trailed 15-4).
  • Dakota State could get no closer than 10 points on three different occasions (17-7, 18-8, and 19-9).  Grand View closed the match with a 6-1 scoring run for a 25-10 victory.
  • The Vikings outhit the Trojans 16-4 in the fourth set.  GVU hit an impressive .324 (4 errors in 37 swings) and held the Trojans to .027 hitting percentage (3 errors in 37 attempts).
  • Viet fueled DSU's offense attack with 12 kills and hit .393 in the match.  She accumulated a career-high 10 blocks, tying the single-match school record with four other former players (Samantha Zell, Kirstin Johnson, Caitlin Pick twice, and Stacy Dunklau).
  • Schell posted a double-double of 11 kills and 14 digs for Dakota State.  She had two blocks.  Grandpre tallied seven kills and seven blocks.  Maddie Polzin had four blocks and nine digs.
  • M. Groft produced a double-double of 16 set assists and 20 digs for DSU.  Nicole Sarringar also posted a double-double of 15 assists and 14 digs. 
  • Peyton Groft collected 17 digs for Trojans' defense.  Tacheny had six blocks.  Frank registered two service aces.
  • Aldrich-Ingram smashed a match-high 20 kills for the Vikings.  She had five blocks.  Wagemester added 16 kills.  Carey tallied 11 kills.
  • Bailey Sullivan produced a double-double of 51 set assists and 28 digs for Grand View.  Wagner-Chun racked up a match-high 37 digs and five service aces. 
  • GVU outhit DSU 64-40 in the match.  The Vikings hit .162 (32 attack errors in 198 swings) compared to the Trojans .110 hitting percentage (20 errors in 182 attempts).
  • Grand View recorded eight service aces, while Dakota State had three service aces.
  • The Vikings piled up a total of 110 digs in the match.  The Trojans had 88 digs.
  • DSU registered seven solo blocks and 22 block assists (18 total blocks).  GVU had three solo blocks and 10 block assists (8 total blocks).
  • Saturday's match marked the final career collegiate match for Maddie Polzin and Nicole Sarringar.
