SEWARD, Neb. – After batting through a tale of two quarters in the first half with a slim 44-43 halftime lead, Dakota State (S.D.) outscored Taylor 58-33 in the final twenty minutes of the game to earn a 102-76 victory on the first day of the Cattle Classic Friday afternoon. The preseason tournament, featuring an early battle of NAIA's Top 25 nationally ranked teams, is hosted by Concordia (Neb.) at Friedrich Arena.
Dakota State, ranked No. 13 in the NAIA Women's Basketball Coaches' 25 preseason poll, lifted their overall record to 4-2. Taylor, who is No. 25 in the national preseason poll from the Crossroads League, fell to 2-3 overall record.
It was the battle of the Trojans in the second all-time meeting in the series history, with the first meeting held in the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Tournament on March 7, 2007, won by Taylor.
DSU wraps up the week Saturday afternoon as they face No. 9 and host-team Concordia. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.

- Dakota State held Taylor scoreless for first four-plus minutes, propelling to an 8-0 lead. Elsie Aslesen kicked off with a 3-pointer, followed by five straight points by Jessi Giles.
- Taylor ended its scoring run with a 3-pointer by Lauren James with 5 minutes, 44 seconds on the clock in the first period (DSU led 8-3).
- Leading 19-13, DSU outscored TU 11-2 in the final 1:58 of the first quarter to widen their lead to 30-15.
- Dakota State shot 57.1 percent from the field in the first quarter (12-of-21 field goals), including 5-of-11 from the 3-point arc. Taylor was held to 37.5 percent (6-of-16 field goals).
- The second quarter was switched to Taylor side, trimming DSU's lead by one by halftime. Trailing 40-30, TU outscored DSU 13-4 in the final 4:13 of the second quarter.
Dakota State held a slim 44-43 halftime advantage, despite Taylor outscoring DSU 28-14 in the second quarter.- TU shot 57.9 percent from the field (11-of-19 field goals) and limited DSU to 35.7 percent field goal percentage (5-of-14 field goals).
- Taylor earned its first lead of the game at 45-44 after a basket by Ava Henson with 9:24 on the clock in the third quarter.
- It was all DSU afterwards. Dakota State went on a monstrous 18-6 outburst to grab a 66-50 lead after Shaylee DeBeer's lay-up with 4:23 to go in the third.
- Dakota State outscored Taylor 35-15 in the third quarter, thanks to their 57.1 percent shooting from the field (12-of-21 field goals) and 5-of-10 3-pointers. Taylor was held to 6-of-18 field goals (33.3 percent).
- DSU maintained its double-digit lead for the rest of the game, outscoring TU 23-18 in the final quarter.
- Five Dakota State players hit double-digit in scoring, led by Giles with 21 points. She was 8-of-15 from the field and 5-of-7 from the 3-point arc.
- DeBeer tallied 15 points off the bench (5-of-7 field goals and 4-of-4 free-throws) for Dakota State. Courtney Menning scored 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds (tied for career-high). Savannah Walsdorf recorded 11 points, five assists, and five rebounds. Aslesen had 11 points and six rebounds.
- Cheylee Nagel scored seven points off the bench for DSU. Ashlyn Macdonald grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and contributed five assists. Lexi Robson dished out five assists.
- Giles, Menning, Robson, and Macdonald each stole the ball twice.
- Taylor was led by Taylor Westgate with a game-high 29 points off the bench. She was 10-of-19 from the field. Claycee WEset added 13 points and five rebounds. Lauren James scored 12 points. Gretchen Moll had 10 points and registered seven rebounds.
- Dakota State was 52.1 percent overall from the field, making 38 baskets in 73 attempts. Taylor shot 42.9 percent from the field (30-of-70). DSU drained 14 3-pointers in 36 tries (38.9 percent), while TU was 5-of-27 from the 3-point line (18.5 percent).
- DSU converted 12-of-15 free-throws (80 percent). TU struggled by going 11-of-19 at the free-throw line (57.9 percent).
- Dakota State outrebounded Taylor 43-34. DSU's bench outscored TU's bench 41-27.
