(RV) DSU volleyball collects 20th win after defeating Waldorf (Iowa) in four sets

FOREST CITY, Iowa – (RV) Dakota State (S.D.) hit at least a sizzling .400 to jump to a 2-0 match lead Friday evening in the North Star Athletic Association volleyball contest with Waldorf (Iowa) at Hanson Fieldhouse.  Despite falling short in the third set, the Trojans earned its 20th victory of the season by defeating the Warriors in four sets.  Set scores were 25-14, 25-6, 27-29, and 25-21.

Dakota State won their fifth straight win and their ninth win in the last ten matches, raising their overall record to 20-6 and 9-4 NSAA conference record.  Waldorf (Iowa) fell to 11-15 overall record and 2-11 NSAA conference record.  Waldorf is eliminated from the NSAA postseason play coupled with Presentation's (S.D.) 3-0 victory over Dickinson State (N.D.) Friday night (Dickinson State is also eliminated from postseason play).

DSU won their seventh straight meeting with WU in the series meeting.

The Trojans conclude their regular-season schedule Saturday afternoon as they take on conference's leader and No. 2 Viterbo (Wis.).  First serve is set for 1 p.m. at R.W. Beggs Gymnasium in La Crosse, Wis.

(RV) Dakota State (S.D.) 3, Waldorf (Iowa) 1 – FINAL (25-14, 25-6, 27-29, 25-21)

  • After a closely-contest in the early going of the first set, Dakota State pulled away late to secure a 1-0 match lead.  Leading 11-8, Dakota State went on a 4-0 scoring run to balloon their lead to 15-8.
  • At 18-13, the Trojans closed the first set with a 7-1 outburst to earn a 25-14 victory.  DSU hit an impressive .450 (12 kills with 3 errors in 20 attempts) and held WU to .167 hitting efficiency (10 kills with 6 errors in 24 swings).
  • DSU roared to a 7-1 lead to kick off the second set, highlighted by a pair of kills by Hannah Viet, a service ace by Sydney Schell, and a kill each by Madalyn Groft and Maddie Polzin.
  • At 15-8, the Trojans used a 10-0 furious scoring run to extend their match lead to 2-0 after a 25-6 victory capped by Brooklyn Grage's kill.
  • DSU hit .421 in the second set with nine kills and committed one attack error in 19 swings in the second set.  WU hit negative .160 hitting percentage by registering four kills with eight attack errors in 25 attempts.
  • Dakota State and Waldorf went through a see-saw battle in the third set.  At 19-18, DSU scored the next three points to stretch their lead to 22-18.
  • The Warriors rallied back by scoring four straight points, highlighted by Zone Pond to knot the third set at 22-22, forcing the Trojans to call tis first timeout.
  • Trailing 24-23, DSU saved a set point opportunity by WU after a block assist by Vie and Polzin to tie at 24-24.
  • Both teams tied or traded leads in the next six points.  Tied at 27-27, Alisha Schaefer smashed a kill followed by another kill by the Warriors to force the fourth set after winning 29-27.
  • Waldorf outhit Dakota State 18-8 in the third set, despite recording 13 attack errors.  The Warriors hit .114 and held the Trojans to .057 hitting percentage.
  • Dakota State stormed to a 7-0 lead to open the fourth set, highlighted by a pair of back-to-back kills by Viet and Polzin.
  • Pond smashed a kill as the Warriors trimmed the Trojans' lead down to 12-9.
  • Schell added two kills, while Viet recorded a kill during DSU's 4-0 scoring run to make it 16-9 in the fourth set.
  • Waldorf could get no closer than three points at 20-17 after a block by Laina Yurs and Alicia Brandt.
  • The Trojans went on a 4-1 scoring run to set up a match point at 24-18 after a service error committed by the Warriors.
  • Waldorf saved three match points to cut DSU's lead to 24-21.  Schell smashed a kill to secure the 3-1 match victory, winning the fourth set at 25-21.
  • DSU recorded 16 kills in the fourth set and hit .316 (4 errors in 38 swings).  WU had 14 kills and recorded a .205 hitting percentage.
  • Polzin led the Trojans' offense attack with 14 kills and hit .500 in the match.  She also contributed five service aces and two blocks.  Viet added 10 kills and hit an impressive .529.  She tallied eight blocks.
  • Schell registered seven kills and collected 11 digs for Dakota State.  She had three blocks and two service aces.  Madalyn Groft produced 17 set assists, six digs, and five kills.  Nicole Sarringar dded 15 assists.  Riley Grandpre, Hannah Evans, and Vanessa Schroeder each had two block assists.
  • Abygail Wood smashed 12 kills for the Warriors.  Pond added 11 kills.  Kaitlyn Bakke posted 33 set assists.  Kaylee Kidd tallied 13 digs. 
  • Dakota State hit .277 in the match with 45 kills and committed 14 attack errors in 112 attempts.  Waldorf was held to .102 hitting percentage with 46 kills and suffered 32 attack errors in 137 swings.
  • The Trojans had 12 blocks in the match compared to the Warriors five blocks. 
  • WU committed 10 service aces in the match.  DSU had eight service aces.
