YANKTON, S.D. – Jessi Giles hit another milestone Friday evening in propelling nationally-ranked Dakota State's (S.D.) 90-55 rout over Mount Marty (S.D.) at Cimpl Arena. Despite a slow start, the Trojans used a 52-23 outburst from the second through the third periods to complete a season series sweep of the Lancers.
Dakota State, ranked No. 17 in the latest NAIA Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, improved to 11-4 overall record. The Trojans earned its first win at Cimpl Arena since Nov. 14, 2015. It was also DSU's third straight win in the series meeting with MMU. The Lancers fell to 1-11 overall record.
Dakota State heads to Chandler, Ariz. to compete in the two-day Cactus Classic. The Trojans face a pair of Frontier Conference teams, starting on Tuesday versus No. 21 Montana Western at 3 p.m. (Central Time)/2 p.m. (Mountain Time). DSU wraps up the 2021 portion of the schedule on Wednesday against Providence (Mont.) in the rematch of last year's NAIA Women's Basketball National Tournament Opening Round's championship game. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. (Central Time)/12 p.m. (Mountain Time).
(17) Dakota State (S.D.) 90, Mount Marty (S.D.) 55 – FINAL
- Mount Marty made three consecutive baskets by three different scorers – Macy Kempf, Eve Millar, and Callie Otkin – in the first one minute and forty-three seconds of the game. MMU opened with a 7-0 lead after a 3-pointer by Otkin with 8:17 on the clock.
- Shaylee DeBeer ended DSU's scoring drought a 3-pointer with 7:15 to go in the first (DSU trailed 7-3).
- Trailing 13-5, six different Trojan players (DeBeer, Miakken Vincent, Savannah Walsdorf, Giles, Courtney Menning, and Lexi Robson) sparked a 16-0 outburst to grab a 21-13 lead capped by a basket by Robson (assisted by Courtney Menning) with 1:20 to go in the first period.
Walsdorf drained a 3-pointer by the end of the first quarter as Dakota State grabbed a 24-17 lead.- At 24-19, DSU went on another 16-0 monstrous run to balloon their lead to 40-19 after a 3-point play by Giles with 7:20 to go in the second quarter.
- Dakota State outscored Mount Marty 34-15 in the second quarter, widening their lead to 58-32 by halftime.
- DSU shot a sizzling 58.1 percent from the field (18-of-31 field goals) and converted 14-of-17 from the free-throw line in the first half. MMU was 43.5 percent from the field (10-of-23 field goals) and 6-of-8 free-throws in the first twenty minutes.
- Giles surpassed the DSU's all-time scoring leader after making a basket with 6:39 to go in the third quarter inside the paint (Trojans led 65-35). She broke the previous record holder of 1,637 held by Julie Fiegen from 1982-86.
- Dakota State outscored Mount Marty 18-9 in the third period, ballooning their lead to 76-41.
- The Trojans hit the biggest lead of the game twice in the fourth quarter, after Robson's basket with 5:31 remaining (DSU led 84-45) and after a pair of free-throws by Angela Slattery with 3:56 left (DSU led 86-47).
- Both teams scored 14 points in the fourth period as DSU secured the victory.
- Giles finished the game with a game-high 24 points on her 7-of-15 field goals and 8-of-10 free-throws. She accumulated 1,642 career points during her career at DSU. She also stole the ball three times.
DeBeer added 17 points on her 5-of-8 field goals (3-of-6 3-pointers) and 4-of-5 free-throws for the Trojans. She recorded three steals. Walsdorf tallied 16 points (7-of-11 field goals) and pulled down four rebounds.- Robson had 11 points, five assists, and stole the ball five times for Dakota State. Elsie Aslesen had four points, four rebounds, and three blocked shots.
- Otkin paced the Lancers with nine points. Millar added eight points, four rebounds, and three assists. Carlie Wetzel had seven points.
- Dakota State shot 46.7 percent overall from the field (28-of-60 field goals) and drained 12 3-pointers in 35 tries (34.3 percent). Mount Marty was 35.4 percent from the field (17-of-48 field goals) and 8-of-24 3-pointers (33.3 percent).
- DSU converted 22-of-29 free-throws (75.9 percent) compared to MMU 13-of-19 free-throws (68.4 percent).
- Mount Marty outrebounded Dakota State 36-32. The Trojans forced the Lancers to 33 turnovers in the game. DSU outscored MMU 42-12 in points off turnovers.
