ABERDEEN, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) was unable to hold on to their 7-5 lead in the bottom seventh inning Friday afternoon on the first day of the Fairfield Inn & Suites PC Dome Classic on the campus of Presentation (S.D.). The Tigers racked up three runs with one out in the bottom seventh to complete an 8-7 comeback fashion victory over the Trojans.
It was the season opener for Dakota State. Dakota Wesleyan improved to 4-3 overall record.
Both teams will be meeting for the second time later this season at Thue Softball Complex in Madison, S.D. on April 15.
Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) 8, Dakota State (S.D.) 7 – FINAL
- The Tigers produced three runs in the bottom half of the first inning. Alyssa Burke led off with a walk and swiped to second base. Stephanie Gabel hit an RBI double with one out to score Burke for DWU 1-0 lead.
- Dakota Wesleyan made it 2-0 after Alyssa Garcia hit an RBI single to score Gabel. After Meghan Daffern reached on base by a walk to advance Garcia to second base, Reagan Grossi hit an RBI single to score Garcia to extend Tigers' lead to 3-0.
- DSU answered back with three runs scored in the top third inning. Madison Aldendifer reached on base by a walk with one out. Vinitzia Blanco hit a single with two outs and advanced Aldendifer to second base. Xitlali Lopez smashed a 3-run home run as the Trojans knotted the game at 3-3, her 12th home run at Dakota State.
- Adrianna Thomason answered with a solo home run with one out on a 2-2 count as the Tigers regained their lead at 4-3 in the bottom third frame.
- The Trojans exploded for four runs in the top fourth inning, all runs scored with two outs. Lia Chan led off with a walk. She advanced to second base after Melissa Krapf's ground out to third base. Elizabeth Whitesides reached safely to first base with a single.
- Aldendifer and Sarah Torres hit back-to-back RBI singles to score Chan and Whitesides as the Trojans regained their lead to 5-4 in the top fourth. Blanco drilled a 2-RBI double to score Aldendifer and Torres as DSU ballooned their lead to 7-4.
- Gabel blasted a solo home run with one out in the bottom fifth as the Tigers cut Trojans' lead to 7-5.
- Dakota Wesleyan mounted a comeback in the final inning. Burke led off with a bunt single and swiped to second base. She advanced to third base after Gomez's ground out to short stop. Gabel reached on base by a walk and recorded a stolen base to second base. Garcia hit an RBI single to score Burke (and advanced Gabel to third base) as DWU trailed 7-6.
- Thomason hit a 2-RBI single to score Gabel and Garcia to secure the victory for Dakota Wesleyan with one out in the bottom seventh.
- Xitlali Lopez was 2-of-4 at the plate with a home run, single and drove in three runs for the Trojans. Krapf and Blanco each had a double and single. Whitesides collected three singles. Aldendifer and Torres each registered two singles and an RBI. Xotchil Lopez had a single.
- Aldendifer scored two times for Dakota State. Torres, Blanco, Xitlali Lopez and Whitesides each added a run. Julia Andersen swiped two bases.
- Garcia led the Tigers' offense with three hits and drove in two runs. Gabel had a home run, single, two RBIs and three runs scored. Thomason added a home run, single and collected three RBIs. Burke recorded two hits.
- DSU outhit DWU 14-11 in the game. The Trojans left nine runners on base compared to the Tigers five runners left on base.
- Xitlali Lopez started the game in the pitching circle for Dakota State. She tossed five innings and allowed five runs on seven hits and struck out three DWU's batters. Rosie Philop (L, 0-1) recorded the setback after pitching 1 1/3 innings in relief. She gave up three runs on four hits.
- Kyllie Ramirez worked for 3 2/3 innings and allowed seven runs on eight hits. Devany Farris (W, 2-1) earned the victory after tossing 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief. She gave up six hits.
