ST. GEORGE, Kan. – Dakota State (S.D.) and Briar Cliff (Iowa) kicked off their three-game series with a nine-inning contest Saturday afternoon at Rock Creek High School, on a new turf baseball field where the Trojans and Chargers became the first teams to play on the field. The Chargers kicked off the series with a 13-0 shutout victory over the Trojans in seven innings.
Dakota State fell to 0-3 overall record, while Briar Cliff remained undefeated with 5-0 overall record.
Both teams play a doubleheader of seven innings Sunday at Rock Creek High School. First game is slated to start at 12 p.m.
Briar Cliff (Iowa) 13, Dakota State (S.D.) 0 – FINAL
- Darnell Prince blasted a 3-run home run in the bottom first inning to give the Chargers a 3-0 lead.
- Jace Pribyl drilled a double to kick off the top second frame for the Trojans. He advanced to third after Esai Hernandez's ground out. The Trojans were unable to convert their scoring opportunity as the Trojans trailed 3-0.
- After the first two outs were recorded in the bottom second, Cyler Melvin was hit-by-pitch. He swiped to second base. Jake Federico followed up with an RBI single to score Melvin for BCU 4-0 lead.
- Jackson O'Neal led off the top fourth inning with a double for DSU. The Trojans could not score in the inning as the Chargers maintained a 4-0 lead.
- Briar Cliff poured in five runs in the bottom fifth frame, highlighted by a grand slam by Connor Lange for 9-0 lead.
- The Chargers scored four more runs in the bottom sixth inning to balloon their lead to 13-0.
- Jacob Wesslemann (W, 2-0) secured the game for the Chargers, tossing a complete game. He struck out nine DSU's batters and limited the Trojans to two doubles.
- Pribyl and O'Neal each had a double for Dakota State.
- Prince, Jestel, and Lange each hit a home run for Briar Cliff. Lange drove in four runs, while Jestel and Prince each drove in three runs. Jake Federico added two hits.
- Devin DeBoer (L, 0-2) took the setback on the pitching mound for DSU. He tossed four-plus inning and allowed eight runs on five hits. He had three strikeouts.
- Trey Randel worked the fifth inning in relief for the Trojans, yielding one run on one hit. Thomas Geiger pitched the sixth inning after giving up four runs on four hits.
