MBK: Comets win closely tight NSAA men's basketball contest with DSU

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) and Mayville State (N.D.) recorded a total of 11 lead changes and seven ties during the key North Star Athletic Association men's basketball contest Saturday evening at DSU Fieldhouse.  The Comets outscored the Trojans 39-30 in the final twenty minutes to pull away for a 74-67 victory, maintaining the sole possession in the closely packed NSAA men's basketball conference standings.

Dakota State fell to 8-12 overall record and 6-5 record in the North Star conference play.  The Trojans are currently in a sole possession for fifth place.  Mayville State lifted their overall record to 11-4 and maintained a one-game lead in the league with an 8-3 record (Valley City State, N.D.; Viterbo, Wis.; and Bellevue, Neb. are tied for second with 7-4 record).

Both teams split their season series meeting, with each team winning on the road.  DSU defeated MSU 72-60 last month at Lewy Lee Fieldhouse in Mayville, N.D.

Dakota State begins their three-game road stretch to close out their regular-season schedule.  The Trojans make their first stop on Friday, visiting Dickinson State (N.D.).  The game is set for 8:30 p.m. (Mountain Time)/7:30 p.m. (Central Time) at Scott Gymnasium in Dickinson, N.D.  DSU plays Valley City State (N.D.) next Saturday at W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse in Valley City, N.D.

Mayville State returns home next weekend, hosting Viterbo (Wis.) on Friday and Waldorf (Iowa) next Saturday at Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.

Mayville State (N.D.) 74, Dakota State (S.D.) 67 – FINAL

  • The first half of the game saw a see-saw battle by both teams, recording eight lead changes and five ties with the lead no greater than six points by the Comets.
  • The Trojans kicked off the game with a 4-0 lead by making two straight baskets (Ronnie Latting and Gare Ewefada).
  • With DSU leading 22-21, MSU went on a 7-0 scoring run to open a six-point lead.  Iker Cruz drained a 3-pointer, followed by a basket by Winder Joseph and Keiron Goodwin as the Comets led 28-22 with 9:06 on the clock.
  • Trailing 30-24, the Trojans scored seven straight points from three different scorers – Lamarr Wood, Ewefada and Gairges Daow – to regain their lead.  Dakota State earned a 31-30 lead after a basket by Daow with 4:02 remaining before intermission.
  • Wood hit a pair of free-throws as Dakota State earned a 37-35 lead by halftime. 
  • DSU shot 51.7 percent from the field (15-of-29 field goals) compared to MSU 44 percent (11-of-25 field goals) in the first half.
  • Mayville State and Dakota State went through three ties and two lead changes in the early going of the second half. 
  • DSU's Gavin Schipper drained a 3-pointer (assisted by Jordan Lynn) to record the seventh tie of the game at 42-42 with 15:27 remaining.  The Trojans stretched its lead to 44-42 with less than 15 minutes to go before the Comets set up a scoring surge.
  • Mayville State drained four 3-pointers during their 14-2 outburst, earning its first double-digit lead of the game at 56-46 after a 3-pointer by Cruz with 8:43 left. 
  • DSU answered back with an 11-3 run to cut MSU's lead to 59-57 after a 3-pointer by Brady Van Holland with 5:38 to go.
  • The Comets quickly went on a 5-0 run to balloon their lead to 64-57 with 5:03 left and never trailed for the rest of the game. 
  • Mayville State's second-half surge was sparked by their 52 percent shooting from the field (13-of-25 field goals) and 5-of-9 from the 3-point line.  Dakota State was 34.5 percent from the field in the final twenty minutes (10-of-29 field goals) and hit 3-of-9 3-pointers.
  • Van Holland led the Trojans with 15 points on his 5-of-10 field goals.  He also stole the ball twice.  Ewefada added 13 points (5-of-7 field goals) and contributed five assists.  He recorded three steals.
  • Wood tallied 11 points and five rebounds off the bench for DSU.  Daow had nine points and five rebounds.  Latting and Lynn each had eight points.  Lynn dished out six assists.  Schipper added four assists.
  • Cruz and Xavier Towne each had 12 points for the Comets.  Cruz collected eight rebounds.  Thomas Gieske scored 10 points and earned five rebounds off the bench.
  • Latrelle Franklin had eight points, seven rebounds and seven assists for MSU.  He had two steals.  John Ketchel and Joseph each had nine points.  Ketchel produced five assists. 
  • Mayville State shot 48 percent overall from the field (24-of-50 field goals) compared to Dakota State 43.1 percent (25-of-58 field goals).  The Comets drained 10 3-pointers in 21 attempts (47.6 percent), while the Trojans were 5-of-16 3-pointers (31.3 percent).
  • MSU converted 16-of-21 from the free-throw line.  DSU was 12-of-16 free-throws (75 percent). 
  • Mayville State outrebounded Dakota State 37-27 in the game.
  • The Comets outscored the Trojans 11-5 in fast break points and 24-22 inside the paint.  DSU outscored MSU 14-12 in points off turnovers and 26-25 in bench points.
