McPHERSON, Kan. – Dakota State (S.D.) was unable to hold on to their 3-0 lead with Langston (Okla.) Thursday in the final game of the shorten McPherson (Kan.) softball tournament at Wall Park. The Lions went on to score nine unanswered runs before the Trojans rallied back with three runs in the final innings, holding on to a 9-6 victory.
Dakota State wrapped up their week in the state of Kansas with an overall record of 6-10. Langston, a member of the Sooner Athletic Conference, improved to 4-14 overall record.
DSU awaits until March 27-28 as they open their North Star Athletic Association conference schedule. The Trojans are scheduled to host Valley City State (N.D.) at Thue Softball Complex, with doubleheader on each day. Each day kicks off at 1 p.m. in downtown Madison, S.D.
Langston (Okla.) 9, Dakota State (S.D.) 6 – FINAL
- After a scoreless first inning, Dakota State plated three runs in the bottom half of the second inning. Vinitzia Blanco led off with a walk. Julia Andersen hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Jacquelyn Folkers, pinch runner for Blanco, to second base. Folkers advanced to third base caused by LU's defensive error, while Xotchil Lopez was out stretching to second base.
- Melissa Krapf reached safely on base by Lions' defensive miscue, allowing Folkers to score for 1-0 DSU lead in the bottom second. Mackenzie Sims blasted her first collegiate home run, hitting a 2-run home run to widen Trojans' lead to 3-0
- Langston scored once in the top third frame, thanks to Jordyn Ateman's RBI single (DSU led 3-1).
- Gracelyn Rosales produced a 2-RBI single with two outs as the Lions knot the game at 3-3 in the top fourth inning.
- LU kicked off the top fifth inning with a single by Aterman, followed by a defensive miscue by DSU. Sydney Carter hit an RBI single to score Ateman as Langston earned a 4-3 lead.
- Langston poured in five runs in the top sixth inning to balloon their lead to 9-3.
- Dakota State snapped their scoring drought with three runs scored in the bottom seventh but fell short for a comeback. The Trojans kicked off the bottom seventh with three straight singles by Sims, Elizabeth Whitesides, and Madison Aldendifer. Aldendifer hit an RBI single to score Sims as the Trojans trailed 9-4.
- Xitlali Lopez added an RBI single to score Whitesides as the Trojans trimmed their deficit to 9-5 (Aldendifer advanced to third base). Blanco hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Aldendifer as LU's lead went down to 9-6.
- The Trojans left two runners on base when the game ended, securing the victory for Langston.
- Sims was perfect at the plate by going 3-of-3 with a home run, two singles and drove in two runs for Dakota State. Aldendifer added three singles and an RBI. Xi. Lopez had a hit and an RBI. Blanco produced an RBI. Andersen and Whitesides each had a hit.
- Nykiah Hines, Rosales and Ateman each tallied three hits for Langston. Carter had a hit and two RBIs. Midori Williams had two hits and two RBIs.
- The Lions outhit the Trojans 13-9. LU left 11 runners on base compared to DSU seven runners left on base.
- Madison Biller started the game in the pitching circle for DSU. She tossed four innings and allowed four runs on ten hits and recorded three strikeouts. Aldendifer (L, 0-1) recorded the setback after tossing three innings in relief. She gave up five runs (two unearned) on three hits.
- Kyara Grimes (W, 1-0) earned a complete game victory for LU. She allowed six runs (three unearned) on nine hits. She struck out three Trojans' batters.
