Trojans earn first baseball doubleheader sweep of the season

DALLAS, Texas – Dakota State (S.D.) outscored Dallas Christian (Texas) 23-5 to complete their first baseball doubleheader sweep Friday at DCC Baseball Field.  The Trojans won the first game by the score of 13-1, followed by a 10-4 game two victory.

Dakota State improved to 3-6 overall record.  Dallas Christian fell to 3-19-1 overall record.

Both teams complete their four-game series Saturday at DCC Baseball Field.  The doubleheader kicks off at 12 p.m.

Game 1:  Dakota State (S.D.) 13, Dallas Christian 1 – FINAL

  • The Trojans plated three runs in the top first inning.  Ryan McDaniel led off the game with a single.  Alec Gannon, courtesy runner for McDaniel, advanced to second base after Jackson O'Neal ground out.
  • Jace Pribyl was hit-by-pitch.  Mason Macaluso hit a fly out and advanced Gannon to third base.
  • Esai Hernandez drilled a 2-RBI double to core Gannon and Pribyl to give DSU a 2-0 lead.  Chris Kropuenske followed up with a single to advance Hernandez to third base.  On the same play, the Crusaders committed a defensive error allowing Hernandez to score home for 3-0 Trojans lead.
  • Josh Freeman hit an RBI double to score Travis Whitehurst, who led off with a single for DCC.  DSU led 3-1 after the first inning.
  • Dakota State exploded for six runs in the top third inning.  Pribyl led off with a double.  Macaluso blasted a 2-run home run to balloon DSU's lead to 5-1.  It was his first career collegiate home run at DSU.
  • Hernandez hit his second double of the game in the top third, followed by Kropuenske's hit-by-pitch.  The Trojans made it 6-1 as Samuel Drummond hit an RBI single to score Hernandez (Kropuenske advanced to third base after DCC's defensive miscue, while Drummond advanced to second on the same play).
  • Chris Burke added a 2-RBI single to score Kropuenske and Drummond to widen Trojans' lead to 8-1 in the top third (Burke advanced to second base on throw).  Jeremiah Zimmerman followed up with an RBI single to score Burke to make it 9-1 in favor of DSU.
  • Drummond led off the top fifth inning with solo home run as the Trojans' lead grew to 10-1.  It was his third career home run at Dakota State.
  • DSU produced three runs in the final inning to complete the final score.  Kropuenske led off the inning with a double, followed by Drummond's single where Kropuenske scored caused by DCC's defensive miscue on the same play. 
  • Burke hit an RBI single to score Drummond as the Trojans led 12-1 in the top seventh frame.  Pribyl hit an RBI single to score Josh Addington, pinch runner for Burke, as DSU's lead grew to 13-1.
  • Dallas Christian left a runner on base in the final inning as DSU secured the victory.
  • Macaluso hit a home run and drove in two runs for Dakota State.  Drummond added a home run, two ingles and collected two RBIs.  Hernandez had two doubles and two RBIs.  Burke recorded two singles and two RBIs. 
  • Pribyl, Kropuenske, and McDaniel each added two hits for the Trojans.  Zimmerman had a single and an RBI.  Burke and Macaluso each swiped one base.
  • Whitehurst led the Crusaders with two hits.  Freeman added a double and an RBI.  Cooper Ness, Garrett Moody, and Andrew Torres each had a single.
  • Dakota State outhit Dallas Christian 15-6.  The Crusaders left even runners on base compared to the Trojans six runners left on base.
  • Devin DeBoer (W, 1-2) tossed a complete game victory for Dakota State.  He yielded the Crusaders to one run on six hits.  He recorded four strikeouts.
  • Anthony Esposito (L, 1-2) recorded the setback after pitching two innings.  He allowed seven runs (one unearned) on six hits.  Collin Patten worked for four innings in relief, giving up six runs on eight hits.  Shane Dozier pitched a scoreless sixth frame.

Game 2:  Dakota State (S.D.) 10, Dallas Christian (Texas) 4 – FINAL

  • Dakota State raced to a 7-0 lead after the first inning of the second game and never looked back.  The Trojans used the entire batting lineup and produced seven runs.
  • Macaluso collected two RBI singles to give DSU a 2-0 lead in the top first.
  • Leading 5-0 in the top first inning, McDaniel hit an RBI single to score Drummond followed by a defensive error to allow Addington to score as DSU's lead ballooned to 7-0.
  • Macaluso led off the top second frame with a single.  He swiped to second base.  Hernandez was hit-by-pitch.  Both Macaluso and Hernandez advanced one base after DCC's passed ball.
  • Another passed ball committed by the Crusaders allowed Macaluso to score as DSU led 8-0 after two innings.
  • Dallas Christian halted its scoring drought with a pair of runs in the bottom fourth.  Alex Westman led off with a walk, followed by Freeman's double to advance Westman to third base.
  • Ness hit an RBI ground out to score Westman as DCC cut DSU's lead to 8-1 (Freeman advanced to third).  Cruz Barrera added an RBI sacrifice fly to core Freeman as the Crusaders trailed 8-2.
  • DCC added two more runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning.  Anthony Marrufo led off with a single, followed by Adriel Davilla's RBI double to score Marrufo (DSU led 8-3). 
  • Two straight passed balls by the Trojans allowed Davilla to score home as the Crusaders trimmed DSU's lead to 8-4.
  • Hernandez hit a single to start the top sixth inning for the Trojans.  After Drummond's ground out to advance Micah DeHarty (pinch runner for Hernandez), Addington drilled an RBI double to score DeHarty as Trojans' lead grew to 9-4.
  • Pinch hitter Josh Van Beek followed up with a single to advance Addington to third base in the top sixth frame for DSU.  Addington scored home caused by DCC's defensive miscue, extending their lead to 10-4.
  • The Crusaders left two runners on base in the final inning, securing DSU's second straight victory.
  • Macaluso went 2-of-4 at the plate with two singles and two RBIs for Dakota State.  Addington had a double and an RBI.  McDaniel recorded a hit, an RBI and reached on base by walk three times.
  • Walker Hultgren produced an RBI for the Trojans.  Drummond recorded two walks.  O'Neal and Pribyl each added a hit.  Macaluso and Gannon each swiped one base.
  • Davilla went 2-of-4 at the plate with an RBI for Dallas Christian.  Marrufo added two hits.  Brandon Andrews and Freeman each added a hit.  Ness and Barrera each contributed an RBI.
  • DSU left 13 runners on base compared to DCC eight runners left on base.
  • Burke (W, 1-1) earned the victory after working for 4 2/3 innings for Dakota State.  He allowed four runs on six hits and registered three strikeouts.  David Kirby tossed the final out of the fifth inning in relief.  JD Kirchner tossed two shutout innings, striking out five DCC's batters.
  • Ian Nash (L, 0-1) tabbed the setback after tossing one out in the first inning.  He gave up seven runs on two hits.  Ryan Bailey tossed 3 2/3 innings in relief, giving up one run on three hits.  Payton Todd, Aaron Trujillo and Jayden Lasley each pitched one inning in relief.
