Viterbo (Wis.) defeats Dakota State (S.D.) in four sets

La CROSSE, Wis. – Prior entering the North Star Athletic Association volleyball contest Saturday afternoon at R.W. Beggs Gymnasium, both Dakota State (S.D.) and Viterbo (Wis.) had won six straight league matches.  The V-Hawks earned a season series split with the Trojans, winning in four sets by the scores of 25-19, 25-22, 21-25 and 25-14.

Dakota State fell to 12-7 overall record and 8-3 record in league (tied with Mayville State, N.D. for second place in the NSAA conference standings).  Viterbo won their seventh straight conference matches, raising their overall record to 9-6 and 9-4 record in league.

The Trojans stay on the road on Wednesday evening to take on the North Star's conference leader No. 12-ranked Bellevue (Neb.).  First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Gordon Lozier Center in Bellevue, Neb.

Viterbo (Wis.) 3, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL (25-19, 25-22, 21-25, 25-14)

  • DSU and VU went through eight ties in the first 28 rallies in the opening set.  Tied at 4-4, Maddie Polzin recorded back-to-back service aces followed by a kill by McKenna Kranz and VonnaGail Schlechter to open an 8-4 lead.
  • With Trojans leading 9-5, the V-Hawks answered with a 5-0 scoring run to overtake the lead at 10-9 after three straight attack errors committed by DSU.
  • With the eighth tie recorded at 14-14, Viterbo used a 4-0 run to stretch their lead to 19-15 after Maya Roberts' kill. 
  • The V-Hawks grabbed a 1-0 match lead with a kill by Katie Frohmader for a 25-19 victory.
  • VU outhit DSU 15-9 in the first set.  The V-Hawks hit .270 (5 errors in 37 swings) and held the Trojans to .091 hitting efficiency (6 errors in 33 attempts).
  • The Trojans opened the second set with four straight points, highlighted by back-to-back kills by Polzin for a 4-0 lead.
  • Schlechter smashed a kill to stretch DSU's lead to 9-3, forcing VU to burn their first timeout of the second set.
  • Viterbo answered back with an 10-4 scoring run to tie the second set at 13-13.
  • DSU and VU went through a see-saw battle for the next 15 rallies.  Tied at 21-21, the V-Hawks scored three straight points to earn three set points chances for a 24-21 lead after Cassidy Spies' ace.
  • Polzin smashed a kill as the Trojans trailed 24-22.  Kenzie Winker followed up with a kill as the V-Hawks earned a 2-0 match lead after a 25-22 set two victory.
  • Dakota State outhit Viterbo 17-10 in the second set.  The Trojans registered a hitting percentage of .231 (8 errors in 39 swings) compared to the V-Hawks' .320 hitting percentage (2 errors in 25 attempts).
  • Down 6-3 in the third set, Dakota State stormed back with a 6-0 outburst to earn a 9-6 lead.  Both teams went through another see-saw battle with eight ties. 
  • At 17-17, the Trojans scored three straight points to open a 20-17 lead after a block assist by Madalyn Groft and Hannah Viet.
  • Viterbo could get no closer than one point at 20-19 and 22-21.  Dakota State closed the third set by scoring three straight points, ending with a block assist by Polzin and Riley Grandpre for 25-21 victory and trailing the match at 2-1.
  • DSU outhit VU 12-8 in the third set.  The Trojans hit .207 (6 errors in 29 attempts) and held the V-Hawks to .061 hitting percentage (6 errors in 33 swings).
  • Dakota State and Viterbo battled through the first 20 rallies with eight ties and the lead no greater than two points by both teams. 
  • At 12-12, Viterbo used a 13-2 outburst to close the match at 25-14.  During the outburst, Winker recorded five kills.
  • VU hit .286 in the fourth set (13 kills and committed 5 errors in 28 swings) compared to DSU .100 hitting percentage (8 kills with 5 errors in 30 attempts).
  • Three Trojan hitters recorded double digit kills, led by Polzin with 16 kills.  She also had three aces, nine digs and two block assists.  Viet added 11 kills and two block assists.  Kranz tallied 10 kills and two block assists.
  • Madalyn Groft produced 38 set assists and eight digs for Dakota State.  Peyton Groft led the defense with 15 digs.  Grandpre collected four blocks (1 solo, 3 assists).
  • Roberts led the V-Hawks offense attack with 17 kills.  She had three block assists.  Winker added 13 kills and eight digs.
  • Abbey Johnson recorded 23 set assists and six digs for VU.  Lauryn Sobasky had 14 assists and seven digs.  Adrianna Reinhardt recorded 13 digs.  Spies had three aces.
  • Rekha Drevlow had five block assists for Viterbo.  Mariah Calkins and Grace Rohde each added four block assists.
  • Both teams smashed 46 kills in the match.  The V-Hawks hit .228 (18 errors in 123 swings) compared to the Trojans' .160 hitting percentage (25 errors in 131 attempts).
  • Viterbo had nine blocks (18 block assists), while Dakota State had 6.5 blocks (1 solo, 11 assists).  The V-Hawks collected six aces with 10 service errors.  The Trojans had four aces and committed 13 service errors.
