KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Dakota State (S.D.) earned its seventh baseball win of the season for the first time since 2016 season by shutting down Kansas Christian 3-0 in the first game of the doubleheader (both games as seven inning games) Saturday at KC Urban Youth Academy. The Falcons rallied back for a thrilling 13-12 extra-innings victory in the second game to earn a doubleheader split.
Dakota State is 7-7 overall record and won the three-game series with a 2-1 record versus KCC. Kansas Christian is 13-4 overall record.
The Trojans remain on the road Tuesday as they play a non-conference doubleheader at Dordt (Iowa). The first game of the doubleheader is set for 5 p.m. at Open Space Baseball Park on Dordt campus in Sioux Center, Iowa.
Game 1: Dakota State (S.D.) 3, Kansas Christian 0 – FINAL
- Carver Hultgren and JD Kirchner combined a 3-0 shutout victory for the Trojans in the first game of the doubleheader.
- With two outs in the top first frame, Pribyl extended his hitting streak to 13 games after a single. Mason Macaluso reached on base by a walk to advance Pribyl to second base. Esai Hernandez hit an RBI single to score Pribyl to give DSU a 1-0 lead.
- Jackson O'Neal and Pribyl opened the top third inning with back-to-back singles. Hernandez followed up with a single with one out to set up a bases loaded situation for the Trojans.
- Dakota State's lead grew to 3-0 after Chris Kropuenske hit a 2-RBI single to score O'Neal and Pribyl in the top third frame.
- Hultgren (W, 1-1) earned his first win of the season after tossing five scoreless innings, limiting the Falcons to five hits. He struck out five KCC's batters. Kirchner (S, 1) notched his first save as he pitched two shutout innings in relief.
- Kropuenske had a single and drove in two runs for the Trojans. Hernandez and Pribyl each had two singles. Hernandez produced an RBI. Josh Addington hit a double. Ryan McDaniel, Macaluso and Addington each reached on base by a walk.
- CL Stacker was perfect 3-of-3 at the plate with a triple and two singles. He swiped two bases. La'Quandre Williams added a single. Cole Henley had a walk.
- Leandro Mendez pitched a complete game, despite a setback for Kansas Christian. He allowed three runs on seven hits.
- The Trojans left seven runners on base compared to the Falcons five runners left on base.
Game 2: Kansas Christian 13, Dakota State (S.D.) 12 – FINAL/9 innings
- A total of 25 runs and 30 hits combined were recorded in the final game of the 3-game series, where the Falcons won 13-12 in the bottom ninth inning.
- Dakota State opened the second game with three runs scored. McDaniel led off with a walk, followed by Pribyl's single (extended his hitting streak to 14 games). Macaluso blasted a 3-run home run to give Trojans a 3-0 lead, his second home run this season.
- The Trojans extended their lead to 4-0 in the top third frame with a solo home run blast by Kropuenske. It was his second home run this season.
- Kansas Christian exploded for four runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning. La'Quandre Williams led off with a single and swiped to second base. Stay'Jawn Hunter followed up with an RBI single to score Williams as DSU's lead was trimmed to 4-1.
- The Falcons added three more runs later, highlighted by Ja'Hawn Byrd's RBI double.
- DSU answered with four runs in the top fifth inning to regain their lead. Macaluso reached on base with a walk. Hernandez followed up with a single to advance Macaluso to second base. Kropuenske hit an RBI single to score Macaluso to put the Trojans up 5-4.
- Dakota State made it 6-4 as Samuel Drummond followed up with an RBI single to score Hernandez. Kropuenske also scored on the same play caused by the Falcons' defensive miscue as their lead grew to 7-4. Addington hit an RBI single to score Drummond as the Trojans' lead grew to 8-4.
- Kansas Christian used a seven-run explosion in the bottom fifth inning to regain their lead to 11-8.
- DSU responded back with another four-run inning in the top sixth. Pribyl led off with a single, followed by Walker Hultgren's walk. Hernandez drilled an RBI double to score Pribyl as the Trojans trailed 11-9 (W. Hultgren advanced to third base).
- Kropuenske was hit by pitch in the top sixth to set up a bases loaded situation for Dakota State. Drummond hit an RBI single to score W. Hultgren as DSU cut KCC's lead to 11-10. Addington followed up with an RBI fielder's choice to score Hernandez as the Trojans knotted the game at 11-11.
- Chris Burke added an RBI ground out to score Kropuenske as DSU grabbed a 12-11 lead.
- The Falcons tied the game at 12-12 in the bottom sixth after Jacob Strobel's RBI single.
- Both teams were unable to score in the seventh inning as the game was extended into extra innings, despite leaving runners on third base for the Falcons in the bottom half.
- The Trojans and the Falcons were unable to convert their scoring chances in the eighth inning as they left the bases full.
- Henley blasted a lead-off home run in the bottom ninth inning, securing the victory for Kansas Christian.
- Kropuenske and Macaluso each had a home run for DSU. Macaluso drove in three runs. Kropuenske added a single and two RBIs. Burke had a double and an RBI. McDaniel registered two singles and two walks. Hernandez had a double, single and an RBI. Drummond tallied two singles and two RBIs.
- W. Hultgren and Addington each had a hit. Addington produced two RBIs.
- Williams was 4-of-5 at the plate with an RBI for the Falcons. Henley added a home run, single and drove in two runs. Hunter had two hits and two RBIs. Jacob Strobel had three singles and three RBIs.
- Hunter and Williams each swiped two bases for Kansas Christian.
- DSU outhit KCC 17-13 in the game. The Trojans left 13 runners on base compared to the Falcons 12 runners left on base.
- Trey Randel started the game for Dakota State, tossing 3 1/3 innings. He allowed four runs (one unearned) on six hits. Kahlil Tilbury, Billy Plummer, Burke, David Kirby, Jared Urbach and Kevin Krumm also pitched in relief. Jacob Yaeger (L, 1-1) recorded the defeat in the bottom ninth frame.
- Trenton Mandl worked for four innings on the pitching mound for Kansas Christian. He gave up seven runs (one unearned) on nine hits. Brilynn Stults tossed one inning, allowing four runs (one unearned) on four hits. BillyGeorge Roman earned the win after working four innings in relief and gave up one run on four hits.
