Trojans cruise past Blue Hawks, move to NSAA volleyball semifinals

MADISON, S.D. – Fourth-seeded Dakota State (S.D.) rolled past fifth-seeded Dickinson State (N.D.) in three straight sets in the North Star Athletic Association volleyball quarterfinals Tuesday evening at DSU Fieldhouse.  The Trojans won by the scores of 25-21, 25-21 and 25-20, moving on the North Star semifinals round for the third consecutive year.

Dakota State improved to 14-9 overall record.  Dickinson State ended their season with an overall record of 7-10.

DaSU moves on to the semifinals round next Tuesday (April 6), visiting the league's top-seed Bellevue (Neb.) who defeated No. 8 seed Waldorf (Iowa) in three straight sets.  The match will be held at Gordon Lozier Center in Bellevue, Neb., with the first serve set at 7 p.m.

Dakota State (S.D.) 3, Dickinson State (N.D.) 0 – FINAL (25-21, 25-21, 25-20)

  • The Trojans kicked off the match with an 8-2 lead, thanks to five errors caused by the Blue Hawks.
  • Leading 14-9, Dakota State stretched its lead to 20-12 after a kill by Riley Grandpre (assisted by Madalyn Groft).
  • Dickinson State rallied back by scoring six straight points, capped by a service ace by Mackenna Johnson to trim the Trojans' lead to 20-18. 
  • The Blue Hawks could get no closer than one point at 21-20 as the Trojans grabbed a 1-0 match lead with a 4-1 closing run.
  • Hannah Viet smashed a kill as Dakota State secured the first set at 25-21.
  • Both teams struggled offensively in the first set, hitting below .100.  The Trojans hit .086 (7 kills with 4 errors in 35 swings) compared to the Blue Hawks .028 hitting percentage (11 kills with 10 errors in 36 attempts).
  • Dakota State and Dickinson State battled back and both in the second set with the lead no greater than three points by the Blue Hawks. 
  • Trailing 15-12, the Trojans went on a 6-1 scoring tear to overtake an 18-16 lead after Abigail Grabowska's kill.   
  • The Blue Hawks rallied back to tie the second set at 19-19.  DaSU went on to use another strong closing run with a 6-2 run to take a 2-0 match lead. 
  • Leading 23-21, M. Groft smashed a kill followed by Maddie Polzin's kill to earn a 25-21 set two victory.
  • Dakota State outhit Dickinson State 18-14 in the second set.  The Trojans hit .245 (5 errors in 53 attempts) compared to the Blue Hawks .196 (5 errors in 46 swings).
  • DaSU raced to a 7-2 lead in the third set after a kill by VonnaGail Schlechter, forcing DiSU to burn their first timeout.
  • The Trojans never trailed in the third set, as they held on to a 25-20 victory for a 3-0 match victory.  The Blue Hawks could get no closer than two points at 15-13 after an attack error by the Trojans.
  • Dakota State outhit Dickinson State 15-8 in the third set.  The Trojans hit .186 (7 errors in 43 attempts) compared to the Blue Haws .054 hitting percentage (6 errors in 37 swings).
  • Polzin led the Trojans' offense attack with nine kills and two service aces.  M. Groft, Grandpre and Grabowska each added seven kills.  Viet tallied six kills.
  • M. Groft posted a double-double of 26 set assists and collected 12 digs for DaSU.  Peyton Groft had 15 digs.  Tayler Corey tallied 10 digs.
  • Grandpre had three blocks (1 solo, 2 assists) for the Trojans.  Polzin and Viet each added two block assists.
  • Baylie Dashner led the Blue Hawks with 11 kills.  Johnson added nine kills and two service aces.  Abby Moerkerke tallied seven kills. 
  • Karlie Cleveland produced a double-double of 24 set assists and 13 digs for Dickinson State.  Sarah Dobitz had 15 digs.  Chelsie Evans had 14 digs.  Ashlyn Hamilton and Moerkerke each had three blocks.
  • Dakota State smashed 40 kills in the match compared to Dickinson State 33 kills.  The Trojans hit .183 (16 errors in 131 swings), while the Blue Hawks hit .101 (21 errors in 119 attempts).
  • DiSU was 92.2 percent from the serving line with four aces and five errors in 64 attempts.  DaSU recorded a 90.4 service percentage (4 aces with 7 errors in 73 serves).
  • Both teams had five blocks in the match.  The Blue Hawks collected 59 digs compared to the Trojans 55 digs.
