MADISON, S.D. – Maddie Polzin smashed three consecutive kills to open the North Star Athletic Association volleyball conference match versus Presentation (S.D.), giving her 1,000th career kill in helping Dakota State (S.D.) to a 3-0 sweep Wednesday evening at DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans won by the scores of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-10.
Dakota State and Presentation were playing their first volleyball match since Oct. 21, 2020 at Strode Center. Both teams are scheduled to complete their second half portion of the conference schedule in March.
DSU lifted their overall record to 8-5 and 4-2 record in the North Star conference. PC fell to 4-8 overall record and 2-4 NSAA. The Trojans won for the 19th time in the last 21 meetings with the Saints, including eight straight matches.
Dakota State hosts Mayville State (N.D.) in another North Star Athletic Association contest Saturday at DSU Fieldhouse. Junior varsity match is set for 12 p.m., followed by the varsity match at 2 p.m.
Dakota State (S.D.) 3, Presentation (S.D.) 0 – FINAL (25-21, 25-22, 25-10)
- Polzin smashed her 1,000th-career kill at Dakota State after giving a 3-1 early lead in the opening set.
- DSU opened with a 9-5 lead before PC answered back with a 4-0 run to knot the first set at 9-9.
- Both teams went through seven ties and four lead changes in the first set. Holding a 22-21 lead, Polzin recorded a kill followed by a pair of attack errors by the Saints gave DSU a 25-21 set one victory.
Dakota State and Presentation struggled offensively in the first set. The Trojans outhit the Saints 15-8. DSU hit .143 (9 errors in 42 attempts) and held the Saints to .029 hitting percentage (7 errors in 35 swings).- Tied at 4-4 in the second set, Dakota State went on a 4-0 scoring run to earn a 9-5 lead after VonnaGail Schlechter and Hannah Viet block assist.
- The Saints would answer back with a 5-0 scoring run to tie the game at 10-10.
- Both teams went back and forth for the next 23 rallies. Trailing 22-21, DSU stormed by scoring four straight points and closed out with a block assist by Schlechter and Riley Grandpre for a 25-22 set two victory.
- Dakota State hit an impressive .370 in the second set (12 kills with 2 errors in 27 swings), propelling to a 2-0 match lead. Presentation was .128 hitting efficiency (16 kills with 11 errors in 39 attempts).
- Down 4-3 in the third set, DSU roared with a 22-6 outburst to secure a 25-10 victory and match victory in three straight sets. The Trojans smashed 12 kills during the scoring run.

Polzin fueled DSU's offensive attack with 15 kills and hit a match-high .387. She had two service aces. Viet added seven kills. Grandpre had five kills.- Madalyn Groft contributed 34 assists for DSU. She also had six assists. Schlechter led the Trojans' defense with 10 digs.
- Grandpre collected seven block assists for Dakota State. McKenna Kranz added four block assists. Viet and Schlechter each had three block assists.
- Gracie Kluever, Groft and Schlechter each had a service ace for the Trojans. Polzin had nine digs.
- Morgan Moelter had five kills for the Saints. Rebecca Allen produced 12 sets, while Sydney Miller added 11 assists.
- Dakota State outhit Presentation 40-28. The Trojans hit .250 (14 errors in 104 swings) and held the Saints to .030 hitting percentage (25 errors in 99 attempts).
- DSU collected 10 team blocks (20 block assists) compared to PC three team blocks.
- The Trojans were 89.2 percent from the serving line (5 aces with 8 errors in 74 serves). The Saints recorded a service percentage of .926 (2 aces with 4 errors in 54 attempts).
