Trojans wrap up Friends (Kan.) softball tournament with a 6-4 comeback victory over Broncos

WICHITA, Kan. – Trailing 3-0 in the final game of the Friends (Kan.) softball tournament Sunday afternoon at Two Rivers Youth Complex, Dakota State (S.D.) scored six unanswered runs and held off Hastings (Neb.) by the score of 6-4.  The Trojans finished the tournament with a 3-3 record.

Dakota State improves to 4-6 overall record, while Hastings of the Great Plains Athletic Conference fell to 5-10 overall record.

The Trojans remain in the state of Kansas as they continue their action later this week.  DSU visits a pair of Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) before playing in the McPherson (Kan.) tournament next weekend.

Dakota State makes their first stop in McPherson, Kan. to face McPherson in a doubleheader.  The first game is set for 1 p.m. at Bulldog Park.

Dakota State (S.D.) 6, Hastings (Neb.) 4 – FINAL

  • The Broncos produced three runs in the bottom half of the first inning to grab the first lead.  Bailey Collingham and Alyssa Carter led off with back-to-back walks.  Julia Reimer followed up with a single to set up a bases loaded situation for Hastings.
  • Mattie Hogrefe recorded an RBI's fielder choice to score Collingham for Hastings 1-0 lead (Carter was forced out at third base. 
  • Taylor Stuhr added a single to set up a bases loaded situation for the Broncos in the bottom first.  Elana Gerhard hit a two-out 2-RBI single to score Reimer and Hogrefe to widen HC's lead to 3-0.
  • Dakota State snapped its scoring drought with a pair of runs in the top fourth.  Lia Cha led off with a double.  Xotchil Lopez added a walk.  Melisaa Krapf recorded a bunt single to set up a bases loaded situation with no outs for the Trojans.
  • Mackenzie Sims hit an RBI sacrifice fly to right field and scored Chan as the Trojans trailed 3-1 (Xotchil Lopez advanced to third base and Krapf to second base).  Annalisa Ingui followed up with an RBI single to score Xotchil Lopez, while Krapf was tagged out at home.  DSU trailed 3-2 after four innings.
  • The Trojans overtook the lead at 5-3 in the top fifth inning, thanks to Xotchil Lopez's 3-run home run with one out.  Rosie Philop opened with a walk, followed by Sarah Torres' single. 
  • It was Xotchil Lopez' first career collegiate home run for Dakota state.
  • Mackenzie Sims led off the top sixth inning with a triple.  Ingui followed up with an RBI sacrifice bunt and scored Sims to balloon Trojans' lead to 6-3.
  • The Broncos scored once caused by DSU's defensive miscue, cutting their lead to 6-4.
  • Dakota State's defense held Hastings in the final innings by going three consecutive outs, securing the victory.
  • Xotchil Lopez had a home run, drove in a game-high three runs, and scored twice for DSU.  Ingui added a hit and two RBIs.  Sims had a triple and an RBI.  Elizabeth Whitesides, Sarah Torres, Vinitzia Blanco, and Krapf each had a hit.  Chan had a double and a run scored.  Whitesides swiped one base.
  • Hogrefe had a double and an RBI for the Broncos.  Anastasia Krueger and Reimer each added two hits. 
  • Both teams had eight hits in the game.  The Broncos left nine runners on base compared to the Trojans six runners left on base.
  • Madison Biller (W, 2-3) tossed a complete game victory for Dakota State.  She allowed four runs (one unearned) on eight hits.  She struck out two HC's batters.
  • Mia Pemberton (L, 0-2) recorded a complete game setback for Hastings.  She gave up six runs on eight hits and recorded three strikeouts.
