MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) returned home at Thue Field Friday afternoon after their 12-game road stretch in the past two weeks. The Trojans were unable to snap their losing skid, falling to Presentation (S.D.) 4-2 in the first game of the North Star Athletic Association softball four-game series. The Saints scored 16 straight unanswered runs after DSU raced to a 6-0 lead in the second game, earning a 16-7 five-inning victory to complete the doubleheader sweep.
Dakota State, who started their season-high eight-game home stand Friday, fell to 10-24 overall record and 4-12 in North Star contests. Presentation improved to 7-21 overall record and 6-10 NSAA record.
Both teams finish off their four-game series Saturday at 1 p.m.
Game 1: Presentation (S.D.) 4, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL
- The Saints set up a bases loaded situation in the top second inning with Brooke Beaman's walk, Cassy Loa's single and Gameillia Becker's walk. Sam VanderWel hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Beaman as PC grabbed its first lead of the game at 1-0.
- After the first two outs of the top third inning, Presentation produced two runs to extend their lead, thanks to four consecutive singles by Beaman, Victoria Vau, Loa, and Becker. Loa and Becker each had an RBI single to put Saints up 3-0.
- Presentation added a run in the top fourth inning to balloon their lead to 4-0. Yulissa Pena hit a double with one out. Bella Pinotti followed up with a single to advance Pena to third base. On the same play, Pena scored home caused by DSU's defensive error.
- Dakota State was unable to score in the bottom fifth inning, despite a lead-off double by Xotchil Lopez. She was left at third base when the fifth inning ended.
- The Trojans ended their scoring drought with a run scored in the bottom half of the sixth inning. With Lia Chan on first base after a fielder's choice with one out, Sarah Torres drilled an RBI double to score Chan as DSU trailed 4-1.
- Dakota State's comeback in the bottom seventh fell short as they scored once. Xo. Lopez led off with a double. Julia Andersen reached safely on base after PC's defensive error and advanced Olivia Peterson, pinch runner for Xo. Lopez, to third base. She scored home on the same play on Saints' error as DSU cut PC's lead to 4-2.
- The Saints secured the victory as the Trojans left a runner on base when the game ended.
- Xo. Lopez sparked DSU's offense attack with two doubles. Torres added a double and an RBI. Xitlali Lopez and Vinitzia Blanco each added a single.
- Loa had two singles and an RBI for PC. Pinotti added a double and single. Becker had a single and an RBI. Camille Vestal, Pena, Hannah Larson, Beaman and Vau each had a hit.
- Presentation outhit Dakota State 10-5 in the game. The Saints left nine runners on base compared to the Trojans five runners left on base.
- Xi. Lopez (L, 5-10) recorded the setback after pitching a complete game for DSU, despite recording a career-high 10 strikeouts. She gave up four runs (one unearned) on 10 hits.
- Lauren Paredes (W, 3-12) earned a complete game victory for PC. She gave up two runs (one unearned) on five hits.
Game 2: Presentation (S.D.) 16, Dakota State (S.D.) 7 – FINAL/5 innings
- Dakota State raced to a 6-0 lead after two innings in the second game of the doubleheader. Presentation used a pair of offensive explosions with a total of 16 runs scored combined in the third and fourth innings to earn the victory.
- Alexus Foster reached on base by a walk with one out in the bottom first frame for the Trojans. She swiped to second base. With two outs, Xi. Lopez hit an RBI double to score Foster as DSU led 1-0.
- Blanco followed up with an RBI double to score Xi. Lopez as Dakota State extended their lead to 2-0 in the bottom first.
- The Trojans continued its scoring surge in the bottom second frame, plating four runs with two outs. After Chan reached on first base by a fielder's choice, she advanced to second base after a passed ball by the Saints. Foster added a walk. Torres hit an RBI single to score Chan as DSU's lead grew to 3-0 (Foster advanced to third base).
- On the same play, Foster scored home caused by Saints' miscue to make it 4-0 in favor of the Trojans in the bottom second (Torres advanced to second base).
- Dakota State made it 6-0 after back-to-back RBI doubles by Xi. Lopez (scoring Torres) and Blanco (scoring Xi. Lopez) in the bottom second.
- Presentation exploded for seven runs to overtake the lead in the top third inning. Vestal and Pena hit back-to-back singles followed by Pinotti's hit-by-pitch to set up a bases loaded situation for PC.
- Larson recorded an RBI hit-by-pitch to score Vestal as the Saints trimmed DSU's lead to 6-1 in the top third.
- Presentation continued its offense explosion with six more runs with Beaman's RBI single, Loa's 2-RBI double and VanderWel's RBI double. The Saints earned a 7-6 lead after Vestal's RBI sacrifice fly in the top third frame.
- The Saints scored nine more runs in the top fourth inning to widen their lead to 16-6 after an RBI single by Beaman. PC produced seven hits in the fourth inning, highlighted by Vestal's base-clearing 3-RBI triple.
- Dakota State ended their scoreless skid with a run in the bottom fifth. Blanco led off with a double, followed by Xo. Lopez' single to advance Blanco to third base. Xo. Lopez swiped to second base. Madison Aldendifer recorded an RBI ground out to score Blanco as Trojans trailed 16-7.
- PC secured the doubleheader sweep as the Trojans left a runner on base when the game ended in the bottom fifth.
- Blanco was perfect at the plate by going 3-of-3 with two doubles, single and drove in two runs for Dakota State. Xi. Lopez also went perfect at the plate by going 2-of-2 with two doubles, two runs and two RBIs. Xo. Lopez was 2-of-3 at the plate with a double and single. Torres added two hits and an RBI. Aldendifer had a single and an RBI. Foster recorded two walks and scored two runs.
- Pena led the Saints with a double, two singles and an RBI. Vestal added a triple, single and drove in four runs. Pinotti and Larson each had two hits and an RBI. Beaman and VanderWel each recorded two hits and two RBIs. Loa had a double and two RBIs. Ashleigh Wong had a single, two walks and an RBI.
- Pinotti scored three times for PC. Vestal, Pena, Larson, Beaman, Loa and Wong each scored twice.
- Presentation pound out 15 hits in the game compared to Dakota State 10 hits. The Saints left nine runners on base, while the Trojans had five runners left on base.
- Aldendifer (L, 0-2) recorded the defeat after working for 2 1/3 innings for DSU. She allowed seven runs on eight hits. Xo. Lopez worked for one inning in relief. Rosie Philop also pitched for the final two outs of the bottom fourth inning. Xi. Lopez tossed a scoreless fifth inning in relief.
- Pena (W, 4-9) earned a complete game victory for PC. She gave up seven runs (one unearned) on 10 hits.
